1. Introduction Daily basic needs like clean water,

sanitation, health care and a

functional education system are

not available for the villagers in

Nanzirugadde (Uganda). Due to

that the round about 200 families

mainly rely on swamp water.

During the dry seasons many

swamps dry up and children and

woman have to walk a long

distance to fetch water. A medical

camp in 2017 in Nanzirugadde has

shown that many illnesses occur

due to the bad water quality.

The water project in Nanzirugadde is implemented between June and July 2018 with the partner

organizations Kikandwa Development Concern (KDC-Uganda) and Health for Uganda/ Africa e.V.

(HFU-Germany) to improve the water supply for the villagers of Nanzirugadde. The system is installed

in the valley close to the Nakasagasi Swamp. Next to the water supply system is the service building.

The water is pumped 40m high (well: 1099m, PAUL: 1139m) through a 400m long pipe system to a

water supply point and treatment system in the village.

The following system components are implemented:

1. 4m deep well

2. 30m trench which is connected to the well (drainage system)

3. Service building

4. Pipe system into the village

5. Water treatment PAUL

6. Water supply through different taps (fresh water, home use water/raw water)

A Training for the villagers in Nanzirugadde and committee members KDC was performed with the

“Service handbook” concerning the maintenance of the implemented facilities. Within several WASH

trainings and workshops with different groups of age and sex a sensitisation on water quality and

usage, hygiene and sanitation was realized.

3. Some Preparations

… in Germany (2018)

• Remote sensing analysis, model construction, material supply was prepared by the German

working group water/ engineering

• PAUL, HOMA pump and other equipment was donated

• Workshops within the subject WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) as well as service

training was prepared

• Emergency equipment for the site was prepared by the German working group health

… in Uganda (2018)

• Land was bought by KDC for the project area

• Many preparations like a test ditch was constructed

• Soil samples were taken and shifted to Germany for analysis

• Training in ISSB-Technology was done by the company Brick by Brick for 4 workers

• Round and straight bricks where produced by the trained workers and the team KDC

4. Construction Phase (12.06.2018-

• The construction work was discussed and implemented with Ugandan engineer John Mugera

and his team.

4.1. Well construction

• 3m diameter and the depth is 4m

• 12-15 Labour per day

• 20 days

4.2. Drainage system/ Infiltration ditch

• Well is connected to an infiltration ditch/ basin

• Infiltration ditch as a sub-surface buffer to collect and seep water

• 30 meters long and the depth is 3m

4.3. Service Building

4.4. Pump and Pipe System

• Electrical system: 10 solar panels, inverter, pumping station

• Controls the whole pumping system

• Pipe system: 500m pipes to the water supply system in the village, different connections,

overflow, short connection with one tap to the service building

and the villagers

6. Sustainability Strategy

6.1. Committees and Close Partnership

• Memorandum of Understanding and project agreement between KDC and HFU

• Water committee with four KDC members with two women and men has formed in charge of

monitoring the system on a daily basis

• Rules are formed and discussed with all stakeholders

• Cultural exchange between the people from Uganda and Germany

6.2. Independency KDC

• Sewing project 2017 to generate an income for KDC

• Soap project with Ishaka Hospital 2018

• ISSB Training to improve knowledge and having the opportunity to open up a business

6.3. Training

• ISSB-Technology (Bricks):

Four people received a certified training in ISSB-Technology by the company Brick by Brick.

Secondly the CBO received a straight interlocking brick press for the production of new

bricks. This is to bring an income of the CBO to be able to take care of the project.

• Water quality:

Two people from the water committee received a training in water analysis by the company

Lablink basically in microbiology of water. Another training from Health for Uganda was also

carried out in the water committee where seven people have been trained in water quality.

• System technology:

The water committee including and the board KDC was trained in the technology of the

whole implemented system. Engineers from Health for Uganda have trained a technician in

the system.

• WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene):

Training and Workshops were carried out from HFU for the whole community where women,

men and children respectively received a training.
