THE HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL

Page 2: ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO DI GATTEO

The history of our school starts after the Council of Trent (1545), however, that school was only for a few children.In 1620 the priest of Gatteo was also a "teacher of grammar", but when he died, he wasn’t replaced until 1714. Another priest was commissioned as a "teacher" and students began to increase.At Napoleon's passage monasteries and monks were suppressed and priests were charged to continue to teach kids.The school was hosted inside the castle. In 1846 in Gatteo there were two public schools: primary and middle school, since there were a lot of priests (“Liceo Ginnasio” in Gatteo was very popular).

With the Italian unification, in 1861, public school begins according to the laws of the state:• Casati Law : municipalities were obliged to take care

of the elementary school ; but because of poverty children attended till the second class;

• Coppino Law 1877: penalties for those municipalities that did not provide school for young

people;• Orlando Law 1904: compulsory education up to 12 years (but in small towns it was never respected for the

extreme poverty of people);• Gentile Law 1923: vocational school after primary

school.

• Education was very slow in small countries;• in Gatteo however the Countess Maria Ghiselli founded

a nursery school for girls in the country at own expense and Don Luigi Ghinelli devoted his life to help the poor children of the country, giving them basic education,

religious education, food, accomodation and professional training to be able to do a job.

Countess Maria Ghiselli’s building.

Later on it was left to the Municipality of Gatteo and run by sisters

Those students who wanted to continue their studies had to attend “middle school” (it lasted three years) and then High School.Students living in Gatteo had to go to Savignano, a little town 3 km from Gatteo, by bike even in winter.In 1963 the government stated compulsory school till 14 years old. So the building that hosted vocational school became the new “ Scuola Media”.

The students grew so it was thought to use The Don Ghinelli College for the new Middle School.
