The Paralegal Post February & March 2018
KCPA has been busy this year with its monthly meetings at Klein DeNatale Golder. It
appears that the new venue is agreeable to all attendees, as each speaker has presented to a
full house every month. Thank you to Bord-A-Petite Catering for the delicious food.
KCPA has been blessed with a small, but wonderful executive board in 2017/18. It has
been amazing to work together with the individuals from multiple firms throughout Kern
County, including Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, LLP; Borton Petrini LLP; Swanson O’Dell;
and Kern County Counsel. Recently, Stephanie Jones, with the Law Offices of Edward
Thomas, joined the board as our Secretary and LeAnne Banducci, with Young Wooldridge,
has agreed to finish out the year in the Community Affairs position after the announcement
that Danielle Rodrigues is moving to Georgia.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Are you interested in working at the state level and networking
with other paralegal organizations throughout California? If so, please join us as our
CAPA Director. Are you interested in promoting our organization? If so, please consider
joining us as our Public Relations Director. Do you like to host events? How about
stepping into our programs position? Are you gifted in the IT area? How about serving as
our Webmaster? Although our actual election doesn’t occur until May, some of us are
serving in multiple positions at the present time and would gladly accept your
assistance. Several of us will not be seeking re-election and are hoping that we will have
time to train volunteers to assume our role.
Our organization has been around for 30 amazing years! Together, we’ve hosted great
MCLE meetings, raised money for our community affairs projects, and raised the stature of
our profession in our legal community, including hands-on involvement with Business and
Professions Code 6450. Please consider serving on the board so that KCPA will be around
for the next generation of paralegals.
Have a wonderful February.

FILLING YOUR PLATE TOO FULL by Rozemma (Sissy) Rucker February 14, 2018
Life is busy, and some people have busier lives than others. Between spouses, children, work and fun; there is less and less time for relaxation. However, there are some people who continue to fill their plate with more things, like being a board member of an association or spearheading a committee or team for a charity, as well as volunteering for other things. We are creatures of habit, if you are busy, then you tend to be busier.
Why do we do such things to ourselves and then complain about not having any time to ourselves or that we can’t do anything else because we already have too many commitments? We wonder why we are so stressed. Others can see the stress, but when they bring it to your attention, you defend your commitment to continue to be too busy. You know, like “well someone has to do it” or “if I don’t do it, no one else will.” Also, there’s the “I enjoy doing it” comment. We can usually find an excuse for anything, so why don’t you find an excuse not to do so much? Draw the proverbial line in the sand and start saying no.
If everyone did that, do you realize that many things may still get done or they might not because no one steps up to do them? Which would you prefer, to do them all yourself or throw in the towel because it’s too much? People can make themselves literally sick from being too busy and others thrive perfectly well by doing too much. We have to pay close attention to our wellbeing and listen to those around use when they are seeing the situation from the outside looking in - they may have a better perspective to see the truth.
There is nothing wrong with the “go getter” or the person who doesn’t want to participate in other activities outside of home and work. Everyone just needs to find the happy balance for themselves and those around them.
Are you a person that does too much or are you a person who does as little as possible? Maybe it’s time to think about reversing it a little bit, but not too much. If those who do too much cut back a little and those who do as little as possible would step up, then everyone may be able to find a middle ground and the tasks would still get done and everyone would benefit.
