Principal's Message

Quality is a byword for excellence in education. The assurance and

sustenance of quality in higher education institutions is the primary

responsibility of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The

formation of IQAC has been effected thanks to the initiative of the National

Assessment and Accreditation Council of India (NAAC), the apex

evaluatory body for HEIs.

The purpose of this cell is to implement and internalize innovative and best

practices in all the academic and administrative processes that define an

institution. In fact, IQAC is no less than the heart of an institution. It pumps

into the academia a rich and constant supply of ideas and practices that have

a transformative effect in terms of improving institutional health, efficiency

and productivity. It is through its effective functioning that the institution

fulfils its aims at quality enrichment and quality sustenance.

The Hislop College IQAC has been putting in a lot of efforts for introducing

student-centric teaching and learning, focussed research along with goal-

oriented governance and management. The last one year, in particular, has

been a year of intense and hard preparation for the IQAC as it leads the

College for the Third Cycle of NAAC reaccreditation.

I am extremely happy that the IQAC of our College is bringing out its first

issue of a newsletter dedicated solely to matters regarding higher education

and NAAC measures. I congratulate the editorial team of the news letter for

this richly informative inaugural issue.

Editorial Dr Prantik Banerjee

Dear friends,

I t g ives me

great pleasure

to bring out the

inaugural issue

of Hislop IQAC

newsletter. The

idea took shape

in one of the brainstorming sessions

of IQAC. The team members felt

that it would be a good thing to

produce a document that would give

at-a-glance the year-round activities

conducted by IQAC in the college.

The newsletter would provide a

sense of satisfaction of having

accomplished the academic and

administrative targets we had set for

ourselves and a spur to do more for

the next session. We also felt that

this was an open and dynamic way

in which we could share information

not just with our colleagues but also

with those in other colleges,

including their IQACs. Such a

practice will facilitate the sharing of

best practices about campus quality

among colleges of the city. After all,

while we do believe in healthy

competition with respect to NAAC

grading, at the same time we wish to

foster inter-institutional exchange

of innovative ideas. A win-win

situation for all. We hope that the

Hislop IQAC newsletter, the first by

any city college, will be a useful

instrument to involve and engage

with all our stakeholders and help us

in fulfilling our mission to provide

quality higher education to our

students.

Presentations @ infinity

Building team spirit over cricket, chicken curry and oranges!

IQAC designed a template to guide the departments to prepare their

presentations. All 22 departments gave power point presentations to the th th

IQAC team on 9 -10 December, 2015. The Principal along with the IQAC

core committee gave suggestions for further improvement. These rd

presentations were once again replayed in the Staff Council Meeting on 23

April, 2016.

By the new time-line given by NAAC, we expected NAAC to visit our

college by the first week of March, 2016. The NAAC room became a war

room where every day the team discussed and planned the impending visit to

the last detail. All departments went full steam ahead and worked hard for the

eventful 3 days of Peer Team visit. To take a break from so much of work, the

Principal and IQAC decided to take the staff for a retreat. Fun and games and

a great repast made the day a refreshing one and recharged our batteries for

the task ahead! Postscript: we are still waiting for the dates from NAAC!

A. Hislop gets Heritage Status Grant from UGC

B. Green Drive in Hislop

Hislop College was awarded the Heritage Status Grant by UGC, New Delhi.

This was a singular achievement in recognition of its 133 years of tireless

service to the cause of higher education in Central India. Only 19 colleges in

India have merited this prestigious recognition from the UGC with Xavier's

College, Mumbai and Fergusson College, Pune being the other prominent

colleges from Maharashtra. The grant will be utilized for creating an archive

of rare manuscripts and for running a certificate course in heritage studies.

In order to turn Hislop into a green campus, IQAC conducted a green drive.

More than 350 plants and trees in the College Campus have been named by

the department of Botany to sensitize students to the environment. Activities

like tree plantation, plastic free campus, eco-friendly Holi, annual flower

show, drawing completion for school children and nirmalya collection were

the other activities undertaken as part of the drive.

Preparing the Self-Study Report (SSR): Visions, Missions & Revisions!

How AISHE nearly got us hit-wicket & NIRF bowled a bouncer!

The Mock Peer Team Visit: A Serious Affair!

The writing of the SSR was a major exercise undertaken by IQAC. Work

began in earnest in May 2015 and continued till the last week of November

when it was submitted to the NAAC office in Bangalore. In the period of

seven months, the SSR writing involved 7 sub committees, 21 team

members, the support of the office staff, and many, many sleepless nights for

the NAAC coordinator and his team. Its 373 pages (a lucky number

according to our statistician!) was the outcome of countless revisions and

proof reading. Well, when finally the deed was done, and everyone felt good,

the project was almost undone by AISHE!

With a week to go for our planned submission, the MHRD shot a letter on the

UGC website informing all colleges which were in the process of SSR

submission to compulsorily participate in the All India Survey of Higher

Education, a Govt. of India project, and attach a certificate for the same to the

SSR. This was easier said than done! The survey required us to compile a lot

of data. So before the IQAC team could even say 'phew' over the completion

of one mammoth exercise, came this bolt from the blue. But we grit our teeth,

rallied around each other, and finished the work to submit the SSR to meet

our deadline.

No sooner did we submit the SSR, IQAC had another job to do and a deadline

to beat! The National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched

by MHRD, New Delhi. Quick to the task, IQAC completed the detailed

format and registered online Hislop's participation in this maiden exercise to

rank colleges and universities at the national level. The results are awaited.

th thThe College went through a mock NAAC exercise on 11 -12 December,

2015. The three experts who constituted the team were: Dr Vinayak

Deshpande, former Pro-VC, RTM Nagpur University & Director, Dept. of

Business Management, Dr (Ms.) Urmila Dabir, Principal, Rajkumar

Kewalramani Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur and Dr A. Khurad, Head,

PGTD Zoology, RTMNU. They visited each of the 22 departments and

evaluated the presentations and the documentation. In their post-inspection

meet, the members gave valuable suggestions on how to improve our

showing before NAAC.

Shri T.H.Mohan Rao

Chairman, Board of Governance, VNIT Nagpur & Industry Representative of Hislop IQAC

“Stake holders are mainly students, teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, management and society. Each of them has an important role to play for taking Quality Measures. As far as Management is concerned, it must have the commitment towards the idea of imparting Quality Education to the students. For that quality measures have to be established at the TOP MANAGEMENT LEVEL first & then only it will percolate down the line. Fortunately, the trend is encouraging as is evident from the growth of Higher Education Institutions and awareness of Quality Education for survival. The desire to appear in the list of NIRF is also an indicator.

The Hislop College management is taking steps in the right direction. It is providing good infrastructural and financial support, with clear &transparent guidelines for quality measures. I congratulate the Hislop IQAC for bringing out its inaugural news letter and wish the College the very best in all its endeavours.”

Hislop's Unique Seven Graduate Attributes

President, Parent-Teacher Association, Hislop College

Hislop College is well-known for academic excellence, vivacious campus life and makes a strong contribution to the betterment of civic, social and cultural life in the region. Headed by Dr. (Ms.) Dipti Christian, herself a highly accomplished person in the field of education and academics, the College is blessed to have on its rolls a very strong, dedicated and committed faculty with an unflinching fortitude to mould the students for the better and give them a distinct shape in the field of their choice. The Seven Graduate Attributes the college has defined every student shall have on completion of a programme from the College sum up the keenness the faculty of the College has towards the students. Putting these attributes in a structured way, we can arrive at a beautiful phrase that very aptly describes what the students are destined to become after they proudly walk out of the vast corridors of the College with the degrees they earned. I would like to coin the phrase something like this: Each alumnus of Hislop College, after years of consistent toil, having matured into a highly resourceful and responsible individual, with his/her effective communication skills, ethical and moral values, investigative and critical thinking capabilities, fortified with massive reflective learning ability that collectively made him/her the ultimate in their domain knowledge, strives to add value to the people whom they meet! The seven underlined word(s) above in bold constitute the seven attributes the College develops in its students. The IQAC newsletter is another feather in team Hislop's cap! I congratulate the entire staff of Hislop College for this excellent IQAC issue.
