•Population: 250 million people.
•An archipelago (a group of islands = 17,000 island)
•A nation of volcanoes (877 mountains; 130 are active;
others inactive or dormant).
•Land area of 1,919,440 square kilometers (741,096 square
miles).
•Forest, agricultural & mountain sector : economic growth,
foreign exchange earnings, and in achieving food security.
MOUNT SINABUNG FACTS ➢ Location: North Sumatera, Indonesia; E:2,460 meter ( class 3)
➢ Last eruptions: 2013 - 2015 ongoing; Dormant :400 yrs.
➢ 15 Sept 2013: Erupted for 1st time since 2010.
➢ 150,000 people living along the slopes.
➢ Agriculture : coffee, cocoa, oranges, and chili.
➢ Vegetable crop productivity had declined by 30 % since Sinabung’s
initial eruption : broccoli, cabbage, corn, eggplant, potatoes, red
chilis, string beans, squash and tomatoes.
➢ Endangered species habitation: Sumatera Tiger & Goat.
➢ Livelihood & food sources.➢ Lack of sustainable development.
PROBLEMS
➢ Effect of volcano eruptions:
1. No access to sanitation & clean water.
2. Damaged forest, agricultural production, water pumps, and livestock.
3. Damaged : 2,000 hectares of agricultural crops.
4. Caused devastating losses to mountain people/farmers.
5. Destroyed hundreds of building, endangered species.
