N4C objectives are to develop and test a broadband network with use of Delay and Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) access technology and to evolve a test bed for applications in communication-challenged areas in Swedish Lapland and in Slovenian mountain. In the network and the test bed, tests will be carried out on user-driven applications, animal tracking including reindeer and cattle, hiker PDA application and on the collection of meteorological data. The Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7) is the European Union´s chief instrument for funding research over the period 2007-2013.

ABOUT N4C

N4C or “Networking for Communications Challenged Communities: Architecture, Test Beds and

Innovative Alliances” is a three year research project financed by the European Commission,

Seventh Framework Programme, coordinated by the LTU. N4C objectives are to develop and

Pablo Vila, MS in Electrical Engineering by the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Pablo Vila is

the technical manager of ALBENTIA Systems.

Dr. Santiago Zazo Bello, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain

Santiago Zazo Bello is Telecom Engineer and Dr. Engineer by the Universidad Politecnica de

Madrid (UPM) in 1990 and 1995 respectively. In 1998 he joined UPM as Associate Professor

in Signal Theory and Communications. His main research activities are in the field of Signal

Processing with applications to Audio, Communications and Radar. More recently, he has

been mostly focused on MIMO communications and Wireless Sensor Networks from both

physical layer and networking points of view.

Mr. Brian Quinn, Intel Performance Learning Solutions Ltd.,

(Intel), Ireland

Brian Quinn is an ICT Research Strategist & Program Manager with

the IT Innovation Centre (Intel Ireland). Brian Quinn spent >8 years

leading distributed teams (budgets > 20m euro/annum) of ICT

professionals throughout Intel, providing solutions to facilities

through Europe, US & Asia. Brian Quinn has driven Intel‟s IT

research agenda in terms of „Collaboratively‟, „Connected Business

Solutions‟, „Manufacturing ICT‟, „User Adaptivity /Personalisation‟,

„Business Process Modelling & System Agility methods‟. Brian Quinn

graduated from Dublin City University, Ireland (1993) with an honours degree in Computer

Science, he also holds an ACCA post-graduate Diploma in Accounting and Finance (1994).

Brian has >15 years ICT industry experience and has been with Intel for >10 years.

Shane Brodie (B.E; M.Mngmt.Sc.) is a 15 year Intel veteran.

Working for the last 5 years in all aspects of enterprise mobility

architecture and implementation. More recently Shane and his

handheld computing team have implemented standardized secure

connectivity and manageability solutions for global enterprise hand

held computers. Shane and Intel‟s handheld computing team

manage some 20 thousand handheld devices globally for Intel

users. Shane has published 3 patent submissions, 1 of which is

being pursued to complete patent.

Trinity College Dublin

Dr. Stephen Farrell, The Provost Fellows and Scholars of the College of the Holy and

Undivided Trinity of Queen Elisabeth Near Dublin, (TCD), Ireland

Stephen Farrell is a research fellow in TCD working and teaching mainly on delay tolerant

networking (DTN) and security. Prior to TCD, Stephen worked in Industry for 16 years

including as a product architect for a Siemens subsidiary and as director of research for

Baltimore Technologies. Together with Vinny Cahill, Stephen recently wrote the first textbook

on DTNs.

Mr. Sigurd Sjursen, Northern Research Institute Tromsø AS, (NORUT), Norway

Sigurd Sjursen is a senior researcher at Norut IT. He received his Cand. Real degree from

the University of Oslo in 1975 in cybernetics, and has worked with ICT research and research

management at the University of Tromsø, in the ICT industry and at Norut IT.

Mr. Krzysztof Romanowski, ITTI Sp. z o.o. (ITTI), Poland

Krzysztof Romanowski obtained his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Poznan University

of Technology in Poland. He has worked in the areas of electromagnetic research, software

development, and computer networks in both industry and academia. He is now with ITTI as

a managing consultant.

Mr. António Cunha, Instituto Pedro Nunes, (IPN), Portugal

António Cunha has an Electrical Engineering degree (Automation, Control and Industrial

Production) from the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto. He has experience in

several areas of development as electronic, instrumentation and automation, and also in the

Technology Transfer Process related with the IPN´s research. Mr. Cunha main research areas

are wireless and distributed sensors and smart identification.

Dr. Marija Zlata Božnar, MEIS storitve za okolje d.o.o., (MEIS), Slovenia

Marija Zlata Božnar, PhD (1997) from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Faculty for

electrical engineering and computer science. She has more than 17 years of experiences

working in the field of automation of environmental measurements (engineering, network

design, project management) and in research and applications of air pollution modelling. Ms.

Božnar is the co-owner and Managing Director of the new company MEIS. Ms. Božnar was

born and is living in agricultural area. She has experienced the disadvantages of such areas

in the field of modern infrastructure availability for ordinary life and education purposes.

Ms. Susanne Spik and Ms. Karin Kuoljok, TANNAK AB, Jokkmokk, Sweden Susanne Spik, the Managing Director of TANNAK AB, Ms Susanne Spik was born and raised in a reindeer herding family and took over her fathers business after his death in 1982. She is still working with reindeer herding. Karin Kuoljok was also born and raised in a reindeer herding family. She started her own reindeer herding business in 1989 and is still working in the business. She is also a member of the mountain reindeer husbandry district Sirges (Sirges Sameby, Jokkmokk). Ms. Barbro Fransson, Power Lake AB, (PLAB), Sweden

Barbro Fransson, the Managing director of Power Lake AB has broad experience from

business strategy and economic and policy evaluations including 11 years financial

experience from the board of a mutual fund. In 1998 Power Lake AB was developed. Power

Lake AB has worked in a large number of contracts with European Commission (Rural ICT, A-

BARD, Rural Wins) as well as being subcontracted by European consortiums. In N4C Ms.

Fransson is responsible for developing the business plan for N4C Test Bed and work package

leader for Dissemination.

FOLLY CONSULTING Mr. Elwyn Brian DAVIES, Folly Consulting Ltd, (FOLLY), UK Elwyn Brian Davies, has previously worked as a Senior Adviser (Consultant) at Nortel Networks, in the UK and was then involved providing technical expertise in the research and advanced development arena to drive Nortel's switch from traditional telecoms work into IP based technology. He has led teams of consultants and developers in working on various topics, including IP Quality of Service and IP router hardware while at Nortel and on a wide range of Internet based applications in a previous existence. Since leaving Nortel at the end of 2004 Mr Davies has been a volunteer working on the SNC project while working on IETF standardization and has been a member of the IETF Internet Architecture Board for the last two years. Luleå University of Technology (LTU) Luleå University of Technology is the northernmost

university of technology in Scandinavia. LTUs strength

lies in cooperation with industry and society. N4C is

the first FP7 project that LTU coordinates. Responsible

is the Department of Human Work Sciences, Division

Gender, Technology and Organization.

Professor Ewa Gunnarsson

Ewa Gunnarsson, professor, holding the chair of human – machine

interaction from a gender perspective, head of the division Gender,

Work and Organisation at the Department of Human Work Sciences,

Luleå University of Technology. Her main research focus is on gender,

technology and organisation, formation of skills and qualifications. She

has developed a particular interest in methodology and epistemology

issues when combining an interactive research perspective with a

gender perspective.

Dr. Maria Udén, LTU, Sweden Researcher at the Division of

Gender, technology and organization. Earned a M.Sc. in Mineral

Processing in 1988 and a PhD degree with transdisciplinary

technology studies profile in 2000. Dr. Udén will be project manager.

She will also lead the continuous seminar on ‘Gender- and culturally

sensitive technology design’ which is key in N4C’s Ethical policy.

Ms. Avri Doria, LTU, Sweden

Chair of ICANN GNSO council is the Internet architect behind the system which is the

technical core of N4C. Since 1st May 2007 an adjunct professor at the Division of Gender,

Technology and Organization, LTU. Ms Doria´s industry experience includes coordination and

leadership in major telecom and IT companies.
