Sunday Riley’s All Natural Sun ProtectionJournal Entry #1

New SPF 30 moisturizer

In this article, they talk about Sunday Riley’s new and improved all natural sun

protection. They built upon their old best selling product by making it stronger. Their Cashmere

SPF was given a new SPF 30+rating. They began by just gaining knowledge of the initial range of

their product which was SPF 30+, but they could not find out the specifics before the test came

in before they went to print. As a result of being unable to know what to put on the bottle, they

simply named their product “Cashmere SPF 30”. The article also talks about how this

moisturizer is so popular because it includes keratin that is isolated from cashmere protein. The

line is based on the formula, “detoxification + various anti-aging activities= glowing skin. Riley

focuses on mixing botanicals & biotechnology. Upon reading this article, I was very excited to

hear about the product. I liked that it was SPF 52 and I found it very interesting that they

include keratin that is isolated from cashmere protein. While those points were a bonus to me, I

grew slightly uneasy as a consumer when I read that they named their product Cashmere SPF

30 before they knew what their specific rating was. I appreciate that they did not make their

rating higher than what they were told, however they still had no problem false advertising I

guess you could say. I, and I’m sure most other consumers, would have immediately thought

that I was purchasing a product that is SPF 30 when it isn’t in actuality. Again, while I like that

their rating is actually higher, it just opened my eyes to little tricks that business owners and

advertisers do in order to get people to buy their product.

In the article, “Allure of Flashing the Latest iPhone”, the author talks about a discussion

he had with a cashier at a local takeout restaurant. He talks about how the cashier was excited

about the new iPhone, not because of the technology, but because of how it looks. The cashier

goes on to explain how having an iPhone shows that you are “cool and chic”. The author then

goes on to compare the phone to an accessory such as a handbag. I found this article very

interesting because it made me honestly think about the appeal of the iPhone. Having an

iPhone is not about having a good piece of technology; it is about style in a sense. Whenever I

hear someone talk about their iPhone, they always start off with how it looks. They like the

simplistic body of it, they like that it looks chic, it makes you look classy. When you see

someone with an iPhone, you don’t think, “oh they are tech savvy”, one would typically think,

“they are stylish or cool”. It really shows that fashion is involved with everything, including

technology.

In the article, "It's Official: Cool Girls Wear Glasses", the article talks about an event where

Warby Clark celebrated their new collaboration with Leith Clark in their collection of retro

inspired glasses frames. The article includes a series of pictures of girls wearing glasses. Like

most people, I have already seen this trend develop and I have to say that I love it! As a girl that

actually needs glasses, it makes me happy that designers are starting to branch back into

prescription frame designs designs like the ones featured in the article would really give me

that extra bit of confidence when I wear my glasses and it may even encourage me to wear my

contacts a little less. It's good to be able to really display my personality through every aspect of

my outfit, including my glasses.

Fashion Observation

As I looked through different stores in an outlet mall, I began to pick up on something in

the women’s department that was very consistent. In every store that I went into, I found a lot

of revealing clothing, It is almost like a competition between each store to see which one can

feature the most revealing garment. I compared different dresses from each store, I considered

how much each revealed based off of the fabric that was used and the design of the dress.

Almost every dress that I encountered in each store either had a cutout, sheer fabric, or lace

that you could see through. A lot of them were similar because they had cutouts on the side or

a slip underneath the sheer fabric so that only the legs were really visible, but I also found a lot

of differences. At Forever 21, they had dresses that were pretty much cutout completely; there

were just two strips of fabric and a button that connected the bottom half of the dress to the

top half. At Charlotte Rousse, their cutouts consisted of woven fabric that allowed you to still

see skin, but with an extra design. At American Eagle, they just had basic side cutouts where

only the side of your waist was visible. Every retailer within this price range is buying clothing

that shows a good amount of skin.

One trend that I noticed that crossed over was the use of really basic colors such as black,

white, and brown. When I looked at the bedspreads, I saw a lot of black and white as well as a

few brown comforters then when I went to the kitchen appliances, j saw everything on display

was pretty much black, silver or wooden. As I went further into the store, I saw this trend

appear again in the furniture where everything was pretty much beige, black, white, and/or

silver. Another trend that I found was the incorporation if sporting teams. There were towels,

tumblers and wall clocks with team logos and names on them. I noticed the trend of more

classic designs for furniture, comforters and storage units such as jewelry boxes. There was

nothing very contemporary. Everything looked pretty old fashioned. I noticed the use of basic

patterns such as stripes, polka dots, and floral patterns across the furniture, bath, and women's

clothing department. The last trend that I noticed is of the silhouette. Everything was made to

fit a person of smaller size. The chairs were mostly straight up and down chairs that were not

particularly wide, the women's tops had the silhouette of a person smaller in size and the bath

mats were minimal in size.

After watching the hit TV show, Scandal, and observing many of my peers, I believe that one

trend that will derive from this show is wearing white, no matter what the season. The man

character in the show, Olivia Pope always talks about wearing the "white hat" and being the

good guy. This mentality of hers reflects onto her wardrobe which consists of a majority of

white jackets, blazers, and dresses. I believe that many people will incorporate white articles of

clothing because of Olivia Pope's personality on the show. Her character is one of extreme

power, confidence, style, and above all scandal. People crave all of those things. People want to

be confident, powerful, stylish and they want to be a little scandalous as well, or at least seem a

bit scandalous. People also tend to mimic things that they like, including people and style. I

have already seen friends post pictures of them wearing white jackets simply because it's the,

"Olivia Pope look". There is no doubt that the trend of wearing white things will emerge from

the TV show Scandal.

Marchesa's ready to wear collection for fall/winter 2014 really caught my attention. I believe

that a retailer that sells designer wedding dresses will most likely be interested in this line. It

was very difficult for me to pick a single dress that was my favorite, but I narrowed it down to

two different ones. The first one that I really loved a was a Hellenistic style dress. I loved the

beading on the dress. I am the type of person that is absolutely obsessed with beading and lace

and the design for this dress makes the beading into a lace design. I also really love the style of

the dress in general. I love the way the fabric falls, especially in the back because it still has a

long train and the fabric makes the train looks so elegant and almost dramatic in a way. The

second dress that I fell in love with is a little bit of a ball gown dress. I love the layers of the

dress. The peplum of the dress is absolutely perfect and I love that it falls down a little longer

on one side. I also love how there is a tiny bit of lace on the bodice of the dress, but it is slightly

hidden. The back of the dress is also gorgeous. I really like the top layer of the back of the dress.

It adds design where many designers would have just kept the back plain. It is a simple detail

that makes the back looks so much better.

There are so many different positions within the fashion industry and each one comes with its

own set of responsibilities. The responsibilities of a fashion designer are as follows, they must

design and create clothing, decide on what materials and patterns to use, sew samples,

prototypes and final pieces, and sketch preliminary design ideas. The responsibilities of a buyer

is to choose the suppliers of the product to purchase, negotiate prices, maintain inventory for

stock, have a good standing relationship with vendors, distributors and customers, review initial

and renewed contracts and work with accounting. They must also be able to work

independently, and make sure that their vendors are doing their job as far as getting the

products to the right place at the right time. A product development manager must be

responsible for product creation and for communication once the design has been handed to

them. They must coordinate construction details, make sure the products are engineered to

cost standards and negotiate costs, confirm the final garment cost, communicate any changes

made to the product, manages the timeline for the development calendar and color

management and they oversee the making of the product from start to finish, including while it

is in progress.

One woman fashion don't is to have a visible panty line. While this should be a self explanatory

fashion don't, to give it further explanation, it is a fashion don't because it comes off as tacky

and even trashy to some people. We live in a society where there are so many products to

prevent and hide a visible panty line. Things like thongs, lace back panties, and even shape wear

in some cases help to get rid of is awful fashion don't. It is just not flattering to women or the

outfit that they have on. It can honestly ruin the look of an outfit because it is immediately

distracting. A second fashion don't for women is to wear clothes that clash with each other.

This is a fashion don't because it again ruins the entire outfit. It is good to mix colors, textures

and patterns but it has to be done correctly. If your blouse is working against your pants then it

just makes the woman look naive to what fashion really is. A woman's outfit has to have

harmony to it. It does not look nice to just pair anything together. A fashion don't for men is to

wear really deep v necks. For some reason, deep v necks just look tacky and tasteless, especially

on guys. While I know men like to show off their chest, it is simply not attractive for a man to do

that by using a deep v neck. T me, it is the equivalence of a woman wearing too deep of a v

neck. There is just way too much cleavage and it is jus inappropriate. Another don't for men's

fashion that makes me cringe at the thought is wearing socks with sandals. This is a classic

don't, but it is a very big one as well. This is a fashion don't because it is such a huge

contradiction. The point of wearing sandals is because it is warm so you want to let your feet

breathe. Again with articles of clothing harmonizing together to form outfits, there is nothing

12

Page 13: Introduction to Fashion Business Journal 2013

harmonious about wearing socks with sandals. It makes it seem like you couldn't make up your

mind as a man to say if you are hot or cold plus it just looks hideous. No one wants to see your

white socks slowly turn brown as they pick up dirt from being exposed by the sandals. It just

looks awful!

The first career opportunity that interests me is a career in fashion design. I believe that

this would be a great fit for me because I enjoy most of the job's responsibilities. I really love

sketching new and creative designs for clothing, I would love to figure out the correct fabric to

use because I really enjoy shopping for fabric and I love to create prototypes of a new garment.

I could also see myself Asa fashion purchasing agent because I love keeping up with new trends

and styles. I could really see myself handling various things with vendors and making sure that

everything was stocked to company standards. I am also good with maintaining good

relationships with people which is vet important in this field since one must keep up good

relationships with vendors, customers and distributors. I think I would be able to meet industry

requirements for this position and still enjoy it. One of the last careers in fashion that I can see

myself in is as a retail manager. This position would be a good fit for me because, as a daughter

of two managers, I am good with management. I am really good at meeting and exceeding goal

oriented tasks, I am good with making sure that everything is running smoothly, I have a strong

eye for potential issues and am able to problem solve quickly so that those issues are not able

to develop. I am also babel to lead other people effectively.
