Enjoy a half-day escape to Kamakura, the place full of historic monuments, centuries-old shrines and temples that are simply breathtaking. This trip will take you to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura’s most important shrine, founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government. The shrine is reached via a long, wide approach that leads from Kamakura's waterfront through the entire city center, with multiple torii gates along the way. Nikko Toshogu is one of the most lavishly decorated shinto shrine in Japan, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Unlike most Japanese temples and shrines, the buildings of Toshogu are extremely gaudy and ornate, with multicolored carvings and plenty of gold leaf, which show heavy Chinese influence. Although it was built in 1617, this shrine’s unchanging beauty still attracts many visitors from the world. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. What capture visitors’ eyes are the famous sculptures of three wise monkeys at the shrine’s stable.
