Mt. Fuji is not only considered to be one of Japan’s most beautiful mountains, but has also been revered as a sacred volcano where the deities reside, and worship can be seen to the present day. The northwestern slope of Mt. Fuji is home to a virgin forest known as Aokigahara Jukai, or “sea of trees,” which formed after a volcanic eruption 1,200 years ago.
