Part 1

Activity 2 ✏ 55 Minutes

1. Write down your definition of empathy or some words about what it means to you. 2. Watch the film featuring Cristina Robbie: how do the descriptions of empathy align

with, or differ from, your own definition of empathy? 3. Watch ‘Brené Brown on Empathy’. Describe the main differences between sympathy

and empathy. 4. According to Brown, what is the core element of empathy? 5. Think about the way in which Fran discussed her feelings about Ted. How many of

Wiseman’s attributes did Fran meet? Write your thoughts down and be ready to discuss your thinking with your interprofessional group during the discussion.

Part 2

Activity 1 ✏ 30 Minutes After watching the video ‘From Discord to Harmony’ respond to the following:

1. List up to three occasions when registered colleagues have shown empathy to one another and have ‘sung with the other parts of the choir’.

2. Think of occasions when you have witnessed a lack of empathy and respect among colleagues. How did you feel and what resulted from these behaviours?

3. Make a list of the different professional groups who would need to be involved in Ted’s care.

4. What would be the potential contribution from your own professional group? 5. What contributions from other professions might there need to be? 6. What are the potential implications for Ted, if the interprofessional team do not listen

and respect one another’s opinion?

Activity 3 ✏ 30 Minutes Stereotypes:

1. Think about your own professional group. What stereotypes are you aware of or have you experienced?

2. What effect do stereotypes like these have on interprofessional empathy? For example, if we think about other members of the team in a disrespectful way, how does that stop us from respecting their perspectives?

Activity 4 - Reflection Point ✏ 30 Minutes Think about your own behaviour with other professional groups during your clinical placements so far. Does it differ depending on which group you are with? Why might that be? Do you hold particular views about professional groups, which might influence your behaviour? How can you address this so that you can promote effective communication with others?

Part 3

Activity 1 ✏30 Minutes After watching the video ‘Dr Kieran Sweeney’ respond to the following:

1. How do you feel having watched this film? 2. Kieran describes a difference between being ‘cared for’ and ‘cared about’. How does

being ‘cared about’ relate to what you know about empathy? 3. Kieran describes feeling humiliated by a radiologist who uses humour in his inter-

personal communication. Thinking about empathy, how might humour block us from hearing one another’s perspective?

Part 4

Activity 1 ✏ 30 Minutes After watching the video ‘Amy Cunningham: Drowning in Empathy’ respond to the following:

1. Write down three main points in the film discussed by Cunningham. 2. Cunningham advocates the need for self-care practices. Think about your activities

over the past 2 weeks. On how many days did you take some quality time out for yourself?

3. List three reasons why you might find it difficult to create space for self-care. How can we get better at taking time out? This might mean asking another person for help or changing our behaviour.
