Unit 0-1 What is INTERPRETING?

It is defined as "oral translation of a written text" (Shuttleworth & Cowie: 1997:83).

Interpreting is a service activity with a communication function. (Gile) It is usually a face-to-face communicative act.

The interpreter’s task is to instil meaning into the text for the target audience, if necessary (and if possible) by providing the requisite explanations or even changing the original speaker’s references, provided this conveys to the audience precisely what the speaker wanted to say.
