ABSTRACT

Proposal for an Internet Connection Package

Michele Nasoni

The document proposes an implementation of a personalized service to set-up a

computer communication system with the World Wide Web and extreme measures

for the data protection. The proposal has the goal to create a local area network and

all the facilities required to have your presence in Internet.

The Internet connection package proposed includes the development of a local area

network (LAN), the domain name registration installation of a server with a proxy,

electronic mailantivirus and a firewall.

It also includes the update of the existing personal computer in order to access the

local area network and a training to the personnel to introduce all the new features.

In the proposal, I have included all the cost estimation details and the time schedule

necessary for the completion of the work.

The only recommendation is to dedicate a specific room where to place the server;

this room should have a temperature between 15 C to 20 C year long and it has to

be away from the crown.

The proposal goals show all the aspect of the proposed Internet connection package

taking into consideration exclusion and future expansion that this platform can offer.

1. INTRODUCTION

This document is a proposal for the implementation of a personalized service to set-

up your computer communication system with the World Wide Web and extreme

measures for your data protection. I propose to Max Propane a solution that I called

Internet connection package, which is a full scalable platform to connect the Internet

world.

The Internet connection package consists in the installation of a series of hardware

and software features, which include a local area network, a server, and an Internet

domain registration.

1.1 Background

Internet connection package is the most efficient way to insure your presence on the

Internet; I consider a global solution that a company can have to be connected to the

Internet world.

Internet connection package is a flexible modular platform, which allows an easy

future expansion that a business can have.

The modules that I offer are:

x A local area network (LAN) development and installation

x Internet domain registration with full maintenance.

x Electronic mail installation and configuration.

x Proxy service installation and configuration with the relative access list.

x Electronic mail antivirus installation.

x Firewall installation and configuration.

In this proposal the creation of your web pages and the installation of a file service

are not included. These features can be installed at any time, and they can be added

to the Internet connection package platform.

I would like to underline that the antivirus will only control the electronic mail. If for any

reason you decide to import some files inside your company using a floppy disk or a

compact disk or any other way to transfer information, that is not an electronic mail,

your personal computer is not protected from the Antivirus installed on the server.

1.2 Scope

The Internet connection package includes the registration, the maintenance of the

Internet domain, which can be max-propane.ca.

Creation of a portal that gives the possibility to access your electronic mail when you

are outside the company, using a common Internet browser. This will be useful when

you need to check your electronic mail at home or anywhere else. This access can be

done pointing on http://webmail.max-propane.ca.

There are some modules that are not included in the Internet connection package

because at this stage I am focused on the implementation of the essential structure of

your network, and any additional modules can be installed at any time.

The modules that I have excluded in this proposal are:

x Creation of the web page, this means that the content of the site

(http://www.max-propane.ca) will not be created

x File server installation (which allows a central files archive)

x Printer service (which allows a central management for the printer queue).

2. DISCUSSION

2.1 Approach

The Internet connection package proposed to MAX PROPANE consists of the

installation and the configuration of all the necessary hardware and software to reach

a higher level of performance to have your own presence on the Internet world, and

offers an open solution for any expansion on the Intranet and Internet world, see

figure 1 Block diagram.

The hardware that will be installed is a complete dedicated local area network (LAN)

composed of one switch, one adsl modem, one server and seven network cards to be

installed on your existing personal computer.

The Server is an IBM Server X205 that provides a recognized standard for

performance and reliability. Off the shelf, this system has the requirement processing

power, storage capacity and network device interfaces. By connecting this server with

a100 Base-T fast Ethernet with the 3COM switch right on the local area network. An

UPS will provide the functionality of the server in any circumstances.

The function of a Unit Power Supply (UPS) is to avoid any short power failure and any

surge that can be present in the power distribution. This unit, the APC unit Smart-

UPS 1000VA, is the most reliable item on the market.

The interconnectivity to Internet is granted by a direct connection inthe city backbone

on PPP over Ethernet, which offers a high level of reliability.

The switch will be a 3COM that provides a recognized standard on the network

device with a high reliability and performance, meeting all the necessary functions

required for the local area network.

The local area network (LAN) is a CAT.6 standard, which offers the possibility of any

future upgrade of your existing network till 1000 Mega bits. The installation will be

done by qualified personnel, which will test and certify the local area network for the

CAT.6.

The network cards are 3COM 100 BASE-T Fast Ethernet, which guaranty reliability

and full compatibility with a wide range of hardware and software configuration. The

installation on the existing personal computer includes the set-up of the driver and the

configuration of the existing software related to the use of the local area network.

The software on the server is considered the most reliable and highest performance

available, based on the Linux operating system; in details, I use the Debian

distribution that grants the highest standards of security.

The server installation includes all the services and configurations needed; in details

I install an electronic mail service that is operated by the postfix software. This

software, in conjunction with an antivirus can controls every single electronic mail to

and from your network.

The electronic mail antivirus is based on AMAVIS, which is a script that analyses the

body and the attachment of any electronic mail and verifies the presence of any

viruses; to be able to accomplish this task, the Amavis uses the McAfee engine, one

of most secure antivirus package available nowadays.

The proxy service is based on squid, full-featured web proxy, the most performance

and configurable software.

The http server is based on Apache, which is used in at least 60% of the http servers

worldwide, and its function is to manage your web page, which you can be

implemented in the future. The web mail portal that is OpenWebMail.

The firewall service is based on iptables, which block any tentative of intrusion and

log all the incoming and out coming traffic .

The log from the proxy server and the http server are analyzed and processed with

webanalyzer, which automatically generates the report to monitor the utilization of the

web mail portal and the Internet. On picture 1, you can see a graphical connection

representation, and on table 2 a user utilization, from where you can see the amount

of traffic generated from any personal computer.

All these software are recognized among the Internet community as the most efficient

and performable on the market.

With the Internet connection package, I include a training session of your personnel.

The training give them a general overview on the implementation and - utilization of

the electronic mail system.

A training for the normal administration of the system is also included and will consist

on the explanation of the procedure for changing passwords, adding or removing

electronic mail accounts and modifying of the Internet access list.

2.2 Result

The Internet connection package provides a dedicated solution required for a reliable

connection to Internet. It is a modular and secure environment to develop any Internet

service and it guarantees the investment, with the ability for any future expansion that

Max Propane should afford in the near future. It can be a web page of your company,

an intranet application or an automatic system to acquire the booking of the delivery

etc.

The Electronic mail with the antivirus protection guarantees the security of the

incoming and outgoing electronic mail.

The proxy provides all the necessary capabilities to control all the Internet traffic

generated from your company to the Internet world with an extensive access controls.

This control can offer the possibility to create particular rules related to the connection

to Internet - (For example: you will be able to decide who is authorized to access

Internet or who can only visualize specific sites, etc.).

The proxy provides a full log system to monitor any activities of the outgoing traffic.

The firewall provides packet filtering, network address translation (NAT) and other

packet mangling, is a generic table structure for the definition of rule sets, which

protect Max Propane from any intrusion from outside, and protects all your

information.

The Web Mail provides the capability to access your electronic mail outside the

company, with an authentication process to control the access of the resources; this

can be helpful when any of your employees are away from the office and they need to

access there personal electronic mail.

The Internet connection package gives Max Propane the right tools for a correct

access to the Internet world without having any worries related to unwanted

intrusions.

2.3 Statement of Work

To achieve the goals of this proposal, the following tasks will be accomplished:

x Purchasing of all the necessary equipment; transportation, unpacking,

assembling and placing them in the work area (4 Hours)

x Purchasing of the domain, and configuration of the domain name system

(DNS), which includes the creation of the third level domain (1 Hours)

x Installation of the local area network (12 Hours)

x Installation of the network card on your existing personal computer,

configuration and verification. (5 Hours)

x Installation of the application software, configuration and tuning and verification

(8 hours)

x Training of your personal for the utilization of the electronic mail (4 hours)

x Training of one person responsible for the daily operations on your server (4

hours)

3. RESOURCES

3.1 Personnel

The local area network installation, the purchasing of all the necessary equipments,

the configuration of the server and the personal computers will be carried out by our

technicians that have a strong and qualified experience.

Our technicians will work closely with a representative of Max Propane in order to

avoid any inconvenience and minimize the impact on the office daily operations .

3.2 Facilities Equipment

Max Propane should dedicate a specific room, where the server and the Internet line

will be installed; this area should be allocated before the beginning of the local area

network studies.There are two mandatory specifications for this area: it should have

a temperature between 15 C to 28 C year long, and away from the crowd.

The specific computer equipment required includes the following:

x A server IBM eServer X205 P4 2.67 with two 60 Gigabytes hard disk ATA-100

7200 rpm connected on a software RAID 1 with two network cards and a 15

monitor

x Seven 3COM network cards100 Mega bits Fast Ethernet

x One 3COM switch HUB with 16 ports 10 / 100 Mega bits Fast Ethernet

4. COST

4.1 Fiscal

The proposed Internet connection package includes the following equipment costs

see table 2 and the installation costs see table 3. The total amount of this proposal is

10,614.03 Canadian Dollar.

4.2 Time

Assuming the availability of the equipment, materials and using fully qualified Michael

and Co.s technicians, the entire installation and configuration can be completed in 38

hours. This estimation includes 4 hours to acquire the equipment, delivery and set

them up the equipment; 1 hour to acquire the domain name and to configure the

domain name system (DNS); 12 hours to install the local area network; 5 hours to

install and set-up the network cards inside the existing personal computer; 8 hours to

install, configuration and tuning the software on the server; 4 hours to train the

personnel; 4 hours to train one person that will be responsible of the daily operations.

5. CONCLUSION

5.1 Summary

The proposed Internet connection package provides an open and reliable solution to

start in the Internet world, giving the right importance to the security.

With this solution Max Propane will have a strong local area network that allows the

Internet connection and any future expansion like a file server, which will allow a

central archive for your files.

Within a working week the entire system can be up and running after receipt of the

hardware.

Considering the quality of hardware and reputation of its manufacturer, for setting

standards for the high-end hardware proposed, the risks for this solution are minimal.

The software is considered the most reliable and efficient in the world for the structure

and the development behind it.

In fact, the proposed solution provides very high capabilities and offers a possible

future expansion as a file service, printer service, database service etc. with a very

low contribution.
