ScriptEd

Internship Program Overview Summer 2016

The Tech Talent Shortage The technology industry is growing faster than ever, but new, diverse talent is becoming more difficult to find. Less than 26% of the computing workforce is female, and less than 15% is Black or Latino.1 Currently, fewer than 10% of NYC schools offer any computer science education, and only than 1% of students receive it. By the year 2020, one million technology jobs will go unfilled2.

What Needs to Be Done While recruitment and inclusion initiatives may help individual companies attract more diverse talent, we must do more to actually expand the tech talent pipeline. Since four out of five STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professionals choose their career in high school or earlier,3 the work needs to be done when students are choosing a career path, and before they enter college.

The ScriptEd Proposition

ScriptEd is a non-profit organization that uses corporate engagement to equip students in under-resourced New York City high schools with the fundamental coding skills and professional experiences that together create more inclusionary access to careers in technology. We bring our tuition-free program directly to the schools, where classes are taught by software developers on a volunteer basis. Students apply their new coding skills

in paid summer internships where they work with role models in the field, as well as gain the experience and confidence necessary to pursue a career in technology. Our student population during the 2014-2015 school year was 73% Black and Latino, 24% Asian and 3% White. Your Return on Investment Participation in the ScriptEd program is one way that your company can contribute to a long-term solution to the tech talent shortage. However, there are many immediate term returns on your investment as well.

Employee Development: 87% of our volunteer teachers say they are better at their jobs as a result of volunteering with ScriptEd. Current internship partners report that team members working with our interns gain management skills, critical experience learning how to explain technical concepts clearly in plain English, and exposure to diversity.

Employee Retention: 91% of ScriptEd’s volunteer teachers feel that they have made a significant and meaningful impact on their students’ lives. Our internship partners report that team members enjoy the creative outlet of working on new and interesting projects with our students, and feel pride in sharing their passion for technology with the next generation.

ScriptEd

Internship Program Overview Summer 2016

Summer Internship Program ScriptEd’s Summer Internship Program gives our students the opportunity to put their skills to work. Our staff and volunteers have been continually amazed at students’ creativity, curiosity, and commitment to our program. We know that an internship at your company will be a great experience for everyone involved.

Dates Internships run from July 11, 2016 through August 12, 2016. Students will work full-time at the offices of our corporate partners Monday – Friday of each week, with the exception of two Fridays spent at Workplace Readiness Workshops at ScriptEd (Dates TBA).

Our Students Students eligible for internships will be at least 16 years old, and have at least a foundational understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. ScriptEd staff will match interns to each corporate partner, with the assistance of our volunteer teachers who have been working with the students all year, and will take host firm culture into account. We’ll provide more information about your particular interns’ background knowledge upon assignment.

Students will conform to the corporate partner’s office culture and dress, and are expected to arrive to internships on time and conduct themselves in a professional manner. Given the quality and commitment of the students we teach, we anticipate students will exceed these expectations.

Internship Projects To achieve the best possible outcomes we prefer to place students in pairs at each internship site. Students should also work alongside a designated mentor or team of mentors who will help them complete their work. ScriptEd will offer a training session for internship mentors in early summer.

Firms will propose a scope of work for student projects to ScriptEd staff, who will then work together with our volunteer teachers to ensure the project is well defined and accessible to your interns.

Here’s an example of one partner firm’s proposed scope of work: Students will overhaul our 'Contact Us' page at three of our sites. Each page will need a combination of CSS design work, Javascript validation on inputs, and form submission. While students will work off of basic mocks from the design team, they will also have the opportunity to incorporate their own ideas into the page.

Cost In order to make participation accessible for all students, ScriptEd internships are paid at the rate of $2,500 per intern. This amount covers the intern’s stipend for five weeks, and the cost of the their transportation to and from the work site. ScriptEd encourages companies to make an additional matching gift of $2,500 per intern. These funds are treated as a tax-deductible donation, and help cover operating costs of ScriptEd’s school-year program.
