Message from District Governor Don Eggert

It’s Club officer election time-Club officers for the 2018-19 club year should be elected soon, and information sent to LCI not later than April 30. This is very important as it helps both LCI and the district get information to the clubs.

Register for Camp Dogwood online now! If your club is sending a VIP to the camp this summer, you may now register them online. Simply go to www.nclionscampdogwood.org and follow the prompts. No more paper and post-age. Save a tree.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT CAMP DOGWOOD Volunteer Week at Camp Dogwood will take place from Sunday, April 8th, to Thursday, April 11th. Volunteers will assist in such projects as painting, landscaping, and other general cleaning and repairs. Camp Dogwood also needs volunteers for a week this summer to assist the campers. Here is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the blind and visually impaired across the state. More info or an application to volunteer visit the camp web-site at www.nclionscampdogwood.org or contact Camp Assistant Keisha Ramseur at 828-478-2135

For eyeglasses, I recommend going to Zenni Optical, https://www.zennioptical.com/, where you can get prescription eyeglasses for as low as $6.95 once you receive the client’s prescription. You may also contact Lux-ottica retailers (Lenscrafters, Pearl, Target Optical, Sears Optical) and ask if they participate in the OneSight program. Also, many clubs have had very good results from America’s Best, and Walmart. Or you may search for additional resources online.

Lions Club Imnternaion Foundation (LCIF) contributions are way up over last year thru January.

Club Officer Installation Season is coming up. If you would like me to install your club officers for the 2018-19 club year, you’d best contact me sooner rather than later. Last year I could not honor all requests.

Family Fun Weekend at Camp Dogwood will not be held this year.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++As always, if you have a question, concern or suggestion please contact me at 910-471-0474 or [email protected]. Yours in Lionism, Don Eggert Dist. Gov.

Message From First Vice District Governor Ray ShamoriGreetings Lions!

Spring is here Lions and it is time get active again with our

Community Service activities. We march at a cadence that never

stops, always proving ourselves to be the best of the best among

Service Organizations.

Have you ever wondered why we are indeed the largest and the

proudest? It is because we as Lions will not accept no as an answer to

the worlds problems that plague our communities. As Lions we don’t add Service Projects

to a wish list. Our core group of loving individuals tackle and plan for the next endeavor.

We are Lions! Fearless among many, always ready on call.

There are many Clubs that are planning Diabetes Strides walks. Others may be planning

for annual fund drives. Numbers equate to strength not necessary stability.

My reasons for making such a statement is because despite some of our clubs rapid

decline in membership. There are some Lions Clubs that continue making positive strides

with a Lions spirit, despite having low membership. The thought of serving humanity is

what counts!.

I and GMT Irwin Sigelwax have identified several clubs that could use assistance

rebuilding. Please give us the opportunity to share our ideas with you.

Just imagine how Melvin Jones attracted businessman at a very interesting period

of time. Yes, we can all agree that he met rejection, disappointment but overall won the

hearts of many because of his ideas that enriched the hearts of others. He (Melvin Jones)

never gave up, just as we should never give up until our goals are accomplished.

There are a number of clubs that need a helping hand around the Globe not just in our

state. The Power of “WE” is how we become winners every time.

Next month I will share with you who our District Cabinet Members are. Just a little

secret, our GMT will be PDG Irwin Sigelwax, PCC Carlton Weeks our GLT and PDG Mike

Elmore our GST.

Thank you Lions, We will be seeing you at our State Convention in Greensboro.

Ray Shomari

Message From Second Vice District Governor David Cox

Fellow Lions,

For the past several months the term LCI Forward has been talked about not only in the LION magazine but throughout your clubs. It is the Global Service Framework for how Lions International plans to serve 200 million people over the next 5 years. There are five service areas that are included in this Framework: Diabetes, Environment, Hunger Relief, Pediatric Cancer, and Vision. The area that I am going to concentrate on this month is Vision.

Lions Clubs International Foundation along with the World Health Organization teamed up back in 2001 to try and stop childhood blindness. The reason that this is so important to our cause is because it is estimated that 19 Million children are visually impaired. Out of the 19 Million Children, it is estimated that 12 Million suffer from refractive errors, a problem that can easily be diagnosed and treated. It is also estimated that 1 out of every 4 children suffers from a vision problem.

The Lions of North Carolina have already stepped up to this challenge by purchasing the Mobile Screening Unit. The Mobile Screening Unit can be used by any Lions Club in the State by making an appointment with Bryan Hoover (828) 478-2135.

Another way that we as Lions can help fight this disorder of vision loss is with the WelchAllyn SPOT vision cameras that are being bought by clubs and used throughout our District. Throughout the past several years, our club has used the SPOT Vision camera to screen thousands of children in Robeson County. This has not only become one of the Lumberton Lions Clubs major service projects, but one that we are proud to talk about throughout our community. It is hard to explain the feeling you get when a parent comes up to you and thanks you for helping their child see better.

If any club would like to talk about trying to purchase a Vision Camera and need any advice about funding, or your club might have questions that need answering about starting a screening program, please don’t hesitate to call me or send me an email. What an impact we could make in the lives of children in our communities if in the near future every club in District 31 N could be screening thousands of children.

Kinston Host LionsKinston Host Lions Club continues to fundraise at each monthly meeting with our Leader

Dog jar and to provide a meal for Friends of the Homeless each month.

Our March meeting speaker Mac Daughety, Lenoir County Commissioner, spoke about the good things going on in Lenoir County such as our school system and our roads. We still have violence in the area, but our law enforcement officers are working diligently to curb these issues. We enjoyed Commissioner Daughety’s talk and many questions were asked.

Our 2018 “STRIDES” event was held on March 24th. Eighty-five people registered. We had assistance with nutrition, risk assessments and many other services by UNC Lenoir Health Care, vendor tables, a Lions table, Vocational Rehabilitation table and equipment, healthy snacks and more…. We raised over $14,000. I don’t have the exact figures yet, but we did exceed 2017. We thank everyone involved, from our partners, UNC Lenoir Health Care, Lions Industries for the Blind and Woodmen Community Center to our sponsors, to the teams and down to each individual who took time out of busy schedules to spend their morning with us. Our focuses are to help send juvenile diabetes patients to Camp Needles in the Pines and assist people living with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes obtain needed medical supplies. If you know of any patients we can serve in your area, please let us know. Forms are attached.

Not only was it a fun time, but we raised awareness for diabetes, raised much needed money to help diabetes patients and gave out many door prizes and raffle prizes. We had participants as young as 1 year and up to 88 years old. Everyone enjoyed the fun and fellowship.

We will be updating you in the next newsletter with our exact numbers. I hope to see you all at the State Convention. Remember the “STRIDES” walk is at 2:00 on Friday to begin the convention. What a great way to begin a state convention. Hope to see you on the track. I’ll be there.

Ready, Set Almost GoAfter a year spent outside of District activities and focusing on my own Calabash Lions Club, I am getting ready to start off on July 1 as our G.M.T (Global Membership Team Chair).

Last year, with your help we had an historic year for membership. We ended our year plus 77 members.

I am optimistic that under D.G.E. Rahim (Ray) Shomari that working together we can meet or exceed the membership gains we had last year.

My initial focus will be on re-building the Clubs in our District – 20 members or less that would like me to speak to their Club and are interested in re-building their Club.

Beaufort Lions

On March 19, 2018, Beaufort Lions Club commemorated our 5th Anniversary of being chartered at the Spring Social and Induction Ceremony for New Members. New members Christina Golden, Cindi Davia, and Amanda Pittman were inducted. BLC President Kortesha George was happy, while BLC Vice President Doug Doubleday put a fist in the air to show his approval. Live entertainment was enjoyed by all, thanks to The Morris Willis Band.

Easter Bunny fund raiser was successful. We raised $216, even though turnout by the public was lower than expected. It was a cold day outside. Other events in town may have drawn our potential customers. Those that came had a wonderful time, with children and adults showing delight in interacting with the Easter Bunny. A large group of Lions Club members turned out to cook and serve and clean up and have fun. Special thanks go to Lions Tom Snively, Leigh Harrison, and Dick McKeon for superior cooking skills. Thanks to Lions Mike Lovoy and Anne Lovoy for use of their space and equipment at Ribeyes Restaurant in Beaufort. And we loved the Easter Bunny! The Clinic was originally in Beaufort on Broad Street, since 1993. It has since moved to Morehead City, but retained the same name even though its location is now on North 35th Street in Morehead City. The Clinic serves uninsured or underinsured people, people under the poverty level who need health care. Volunteer physicians, nurses, health care educators, dentists, pharmacists, hospital technicians, and other health professionals provide treatment. Management of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, thyroid disease, and hypertension is emphasized.

Lion Jason Williams has reported a summary of our vision assistance the past several years: 2015 = 17 people assisted, 2016 = 36 people assisted, 2017 = 42 people assisted, approximately. We thank Jason for all his hard work behind the scenes in managing our vision/eyeglass program. Lion Jim Taylor is heading up the Beaufort Lions Club booth that will be present at the Olde Beaufort Farmers’ Market, a festive event held at the Carteret County Courthouse grounds on Saturdays. We will sell brooms and publicize our club on the first and third Saturdays in each month beginning April 28, 2018. Our club now has a Beaufort Lions Club Membership Handbook. Much appreciation is due to Lion Malia Bagdy for producing this excellent guide for our members.

Fayetteville Community LionsGood morning fellow Lions!

I wanted to introduce to you Lion “Brunnie” Cordero, AKA, Brunilda Cordero, MD; FAAP Board Certified Pediatric Endocrinologist with the Cape Fear Valley Health System of Fayetteville NC.

She was also Charter Vice President with the Fayetteville Community Lion’s Club… MY home club! She takes care of all the “little ones” with Diabetes… She is a pretty spectacular lady, and I wanted to interview her and let you all know a few things that you may or may not know about Diabetes… The interview went something like this…

Me: “Doctor Cordero, could you tell us a little about Diabetes?”

Doc C: “Sure! It’s been around for over three millennia. Diabetes is a disease that is well known across the world. It affects children, teenagers and adults. Diabetes is one of the first diseases described as early as 1550 by Egyptian manuscripts and hieroglyphics. Indian physicians around the same time identified the disease and classified it as “honey urine”, because it was noticed that ants were attracted to the urine! Children and adults diagnosed prior to the discovery of insulin were managed on a high fat/protein diet and no carbohydrates. This is known today as the Atkins diet. The life span of those children was six months. Thus, diabetes was a terminal illness back then. We have come a long way!

Me: “What are the different kinds of Diabetes?

Doc C: “Diabetes can be classified into the following categories:

1. Type 1 diabetes (due to beta cell destruction in the pancreas leading to absolute insulin deficiency). This is what is referred as autoimmune diabetes.

2. Type 2 diabetes (due to progressive insulin secretory defect on the background of insulin resistance).

3. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) (diabetes diagnosed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy that is not clearly overt diabetes).

4. Specific types of diabetes due to other causes, e.g. monogenic diabetes syndromes (such as neonatal diabetes and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODDY); diseases of the exocrine pancreas (e.g. cystic fibrosis), and drug or chemical induced diabetes (such as in the treatment of HIV/AIDS or after organ transplantation).

The most common form of diabetes in the USA is Type 2 diabetes. The rise in type 2 diabetes has been associated with the epidemic of childhood obesity, lack of exercise in children and adults and poor eating habits.

Me: Everyone has heard of Insulin shots to combat diabetes… Are there any new inventions or drugs on the horizon?

Doc C: For children and adolescents, the use of insulin pumps is preferred, as it provides more flexibility with meals and dosing. The era of the insulin pumps and sensors have revolutionized the management of diabetes. Recent research and studies have shown reduction in hemoglobin A1C, reduced incidence of hypoglycemia, substantial improvement in fasting blood glucose, and improved quality of living.

Technology is moving rapidly and many future tools are being explored such as: Biosensing Tattoo: it is intended to monitor blood glucose level Contact lenses: soft contact lens encapsulated by a sensor, chip and antenna that will monitor glucose level and will send the info to a receiver. Oral insulin is on Phase II trials and will soon be moving to Phase III. This is pretty exciting stuff!

Me: “Do you see a cure on the horizon? What seems to you to be the strongest contender?”

Doc C: “The cure for type 1 diabetes is not here yet. However, stem cell transplant trials across the USA and other countries are going on now with tremendous results! The medical community is anxiously waiting for the outcome of these trials. Many children, adolescents and adults will be able to live a normal life without having to count carbohydrates or dose with insulin. This is something to truly be excited about! There IS a light at the end of the tunnel, and we Lions should do everything we can to help do away with all forms of Diabetes!

Me, to you, my fellow Lions: “So, if you haven’t done a Strides Walk, raised funds for research, or Diabetes Camps, give me a call! I will help you help others! We are so very close to eradication of this terrible disease!

Selma Lion Dicky Parrish assisted school nurse Tina Kornegay with screening all the first graders at Selma Elementary School. SPOT technology was used to screen 150+ students. Eighteen students were referred for followup.

Lions Clubs in zone 11 are working together to assist school nurses with screening students in all elementary schools and as needed in other schools.

“This is the most exciting, efficient and needed event that I have ever participated in as a Lion of 42 years” said Lion Dicky.

“We are on board with this volunteer assistance” stated Johnston County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ross Renfow.

Wilmington LionsParticipation At Kidz Expo

On March 3rd we participated in the KidZ Expo at the Wilmington Convention Center. There was a large crowd of children and parents at the event affording us the opportunity to explain who we are and what we do as Lions. We also performed vision screenings for 80 children and 3 adults. Ten of the children screened were referred for further evaluation.

Used Eyeglasses Submitted

We recently sent 815 pairs of used eyeglasses to NC Lions, Inc. at Camp Dogwood. This makes 5,325 pairs of eyeglasses, as well as 725 sunglasses, we have recycled since last April (2017).

Coastal Preparatory Academy Vision Screening

On March 22 and 23 we conducted a vision screening at Coastal Preparatory Academy for students in grades K through six. We screened 263 students, 22 of whom we referred for follow-up full vision examinations. Our deep appreciation goes to all our members who participated.

M eeting NotesPDG Lion Irwin Sieglewax and his wife Lion Linda attended our meeting on March 5th. For our program that evening, Lion George presented a video which he and Lion Irwin, the General Membership Chair for North Carolina, put together. It described the overall background and organization of Lionism , and discussed the various activities and work of the Lions of North Carolina in particular. This video will be a useful tool not only in recruiting new members but also in orienting members in general.

The speaker at our March 21st meeting was John Bauer, a former member of the Kinston Lions Club and a candidate for the NC House District 20. He described what he felt would be the advantages of North Carolina’s having a Public Bank to handle State funding for such public obligations as municipal bond offerings. Also at the meeting PDG Lion George reinducted Theresa Ellis who was able to resume her membership in our club.

Burgaw LionsMeetings will be on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.

The 1st will be at 1:00 PM The 3rd will be at 6:30 PM

The place will continue to be the Presbyterian Church in Burgaw.

Thanks! Lion Bonnie Bloodworth

Dear Community and Lions Club Supporter,

Our 95th annual North Carolina Lions State Convention will be held April 27 – 29, 2018 at the Greensboro Airport Marriott, Greensboro, North Carolina. Our convention is open to over 6,000 Lions across the state and is conducted to allow Lions to learn more about how they can serve their communities in our key focus areas of Vision, Hunger, Environment, Pediatric Cancer and Diabetes.

Since diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and many other life-altering conditions, this will be a key focus at our convention. On Friday, April 27th we will host a Strides Walk for diabetes to help raise awareness of this fast-growing disease.

Generous donors like you are the key to our success and we hope that we can count on your support to help us defray the costs associated with our convention.

Your ad will be placed in our program which will be given to all attendees at the convention and, in addition, will be distributed electronically to over 6,000 Lions from Murphy to Manteo and many places in between! This is a great opportunity to advertise YOUR business across the state!

Thank you in advance for supporting our 2018 convention as we continue the motto of Lions International……..WE SERVE.

Sincerely,

Lion Barbara Thompson PDG Lion Terrie Grooms Co-Chair Co-Chair
