•Jka ¥III'misteri' f^r muer r "God gave us . . . a spirit of . . . power and love and discipline . . . and called us with a holy calling . . . according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus . . . who . . . brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, whereunto I was appointed a preacher, and . . . a teacher."

Joyously I give myself to God and His service, and He blesses me with strength and stability, wisdom and good judgment, supply and support.

I covenant myself to keep open in mind to an ever widening consciousness of the eternal truths of Being. I lay aside every old belief or outworn practice that would cause me to become crystallized in my mind, my body, or my center ministry.

Every day with renewed enthusiasm and expanded vision I reconsecrate myself as a channel for the expression of the infinite life, love, and wisdom of God. I speak the Christ word of Truth with power and authority. I lovingly and humbly serve all who come to me in the ministry of Jesus Christ "that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work."

LICENSED UNITY MINISTERS AND TEACHERS

A leader may recommend an individual for recognition as a licensed Unity minister or teacher if he has completed the Correspondence School Course and Training School study and has had one year's experience of satisfactory teaching in an authorized center, consisting of a minimum of twenty-four lessons.

These recommendations are sent to the Field Department of Unity School, which submits the names to the Executive Board of the Unity Ministers' Association for action and approval. Each year at the Unity Ministers' Association Conference, the Executive Board appoints an Examining Committee composed of one member from the Field Department, one member from the Training School, one member from the Correspondence School Department, and at least two members from the Executive Board. The candidates appear before the Examining Committee, which in turn reports to the Executive Board so that its members may become better acquainted with the candidates and know more about their qualifications. The Examining Committee will then make its recommendation to the Executive Board, which will make the final decision in selecting candidates for licensed recognition. No one will be given a license until such time as he has appeared before the Examining Committee at Unity School of Christianity, Lee's Summit, Missouri.

LICENSED UNITY MINISTERS AND TEACHERS

(Licensed ministers are in charge of Unity centers. Licensed teachers are teachers serving in a Unity center or teachers conducting classwork.)

CONSTITUTION OF UNITY MINISTERS' ASSOCIATION

Preamble

Inspired by the Spirit of wisdom, we ministers and leaders in the Unity movement have formed the Unity Ministers' Association for the purpose of meeting together once a year to raise the Christ consciousness in one another and in the centers.

We seek to stress the realization that Christ in each of us is our leader and teacher and that His inspiration gives original, divine, and orderly ideas, and that to Him alone we look. As each member recognizes and follows the divine within himself all will b e raised to His glory.

ARTICLE 1. NAME. This organization shall be known as the Unity Ministers' Association.

ARTICLE 2. PURPOSE. The purpose of this organization shall be to co-operate with Christ in promoting an annual conference of recognized Unity leaders and ministers, who meet to exchange ideas for the uplift and advancement of the teachings of practical Christianity.

ARTICLE 3. MEMBERSHIP. The membership of the Unity Ministers' Association shall consist of recognized Unity center leaders and ministers who are working in co-operation with the Field Department of Unity School of Christianity, Lee's Summit, Missouri. After the close of the 1935 conference, new applicants can be accepted for membership only if they have been ordained by Unity School of Christianity or if their ordination has been approved by the Field Department and the Unity Training School Board. Officials of Unity School of Christianity who have not been ordained may be elected by the Executive

38

Board to honorary membership in the Association. Application for membership must be filed with the Board of Directors and approved by nine members of the Board. Membership shall be for one year only. All memberships shall expire at the close of the annua l conference unless renewed previous to that date.

ARTICLE 4. EXECUTIVE BOARD. The Executive Board shall consist of twelve members who are ordained Unity ministers. This Board shall form its own organization, electing the officers designated by Article 5.

ARTICLE 5. OFFICERS. The officers of this organization shall consist of a President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer, who shall be elected annually by the Executive Board and serve for a term of one year, or until their successors are elected and qualified. The President and Vice President must be elected from the membership of the Executive Board. The Secretary-Treasurer may be a n official of Unity School of Christianity and not a member of the Board.

ARTICLE 6. VACANCIES. The Executive Board shall have power to fill all vacancies lor the unexpired term of any member of this Board who may resign or be otherwise disqualified. If a member of the Executive Board is absent at any annual conference, the Board shall appoint someone else to act and vote in his place during that conference period only.

ARTICLE 7. VOTING. At each annual conference the Executive Board shall submit a list of at least twelve (12) names as nominees. Additional names may be added to this list by nominations from the floor. From these nominees the members of the Association present shall elect by ballot four members to serve on the Executive Board for a period

39

of three (3) years and until their successors have been duly elected and qualified.

ARTICLE 8. BYLAWS. All bylaws and regulations for the government of themselves and the Unity Ministers' Association shall be formulated by the Executive Board.

ARTICLE 9. AMENDMENTS. The Constitution and Bylaws can be amended or revised at any annual meeting of the Executive Board by a two-thirds (%) majority vote of its members present, after the amendment has been approved by a majority of the Association members present and voting.

BYLAWS OF UNITY MINISTERS' ASSOCIATION

ARTICLE 1. The first business session of the Association shall be held on the first day of the annual conference; and shall be opened with the Lord's Prayer, repeated in unison, followed by the reading of the Preamble to the Constitution.

ARTICLE 2. A special meeting of the Executive Board may be called by the President at any time, and must be called upon the written request of not less than five of its members. The President may also, in cases of emergency arising between conferences, call for and receive the vote of the members of the board individually. This privilege, however, shall not extend to the review or reconsideration of any matter already passed upon by the Executive Board in regular session.

ARTICLE 3. In all meetings of the Executive Board seven (7) members shall constitute a quorum to transact business except at the regular annual meeting when the members present shall constitute a quorum.

40

ARTICLE 4. The regular order of business of the Executive Board shall be as follows:

Opening with word of silence. Roll call. Reading of minutes of previous meeting. Report of special meetings. Report of standing committees. Bills and communications. Election of officers. Unfinished business. New business. Closing.

ARTICLE 5. Robert's "Rules of Order" shall be the authority on parliamentary law and usage of this organization.

ARTICLE 6. A recognized Unity center shall have as its head an accredited member of the Association, a licensed minister, or a teacher working under dispensation from the Field Department, and shall teach the principles of practical Christianity, using the textbooks and literature published or approved by Unity School of Christianity, Lee's Summit, Missouri, and following the course of teaching prescribed by that School.

ARTICLE 7. In order to be accepted as a recognized Unity center, a center shall eliminate all textbooks and teachings that do not conform to the Christ standard as recognized by Unity School of Christianity, Lee's Summit, Missouri. This does not exclude any book or lessons that conform to this standard.

ARTICLE 8. All centers shall make regular annual reports to the Field Department, on forms supplied by the Field Department, and copies of all announcements and printed matter mailed out by the local centers shall be mailed to the office of the Field Department.

ARTICLE 9. Ordination of Unity leaders and ministers shall be performed by Unity School of Christianity, Lee's Summit, Missouri, or approved by the Field Department and the Unity Training School Board.

ARTICLE 10. The qualifications of a candidate for ordination shall consist of the completion of the Correspondence School Course and Training School study, and at least one year's center ministry that satisfies Unity School and the Unity Ministers' Association Executive Board that the candidate's teaching and ethics are of the Christ standard. Compliance with these qualifications shall be enforced without exception or favor.

ARTICLE 11. The qualifications of a candidate for licensed minister or teacher recognition shall consist of the completion of the Correspondence School Course and Training School study and at least one year's experience of satisfactory teaching in an authorized center, consisting of a minimum of twenty-four lessons. He must be recommended by the leader, or leaders, with whom he has served. A licensed minister or teacher may use the name "Unity" in connection with his work and have the same co-operation that the Field Department extends to any ordained minister. He shall be listed in the U.M.A. Yearbook under the heading "Licensed Ministers and Teachers."

Recommendations are sent to the Field Department of Unity School, which submits the names to the Executive Board of the Unity Ministers' Association for action and approval. Each year at the Unity Ministers' Association Conference, the Executive Board appoints an Examining Committee composed of one member from the Field Department, one member from the Training School, one member from the Correspondence School Depart-

42

ment, and at least two members from the Executive Board.

Any teacher who has become inactive in the work shall not have his license renewed until his activity is resumed.

ARTICLE 12. A regular meeting of the Executive Board shall be held on a day preceding the annual conference. The President shall remind all Board members of this meeting.

ARTICLE 13. Candidates for membership in the Unity Ministers' Association and all licensed teachers and ministers shall satisfy the Executive Board, or a Board of Examiners appointed by it, that they are familiar with the Constitution, Bylaws, and Code of Ethics of the Unity Ministers' Association, and understand how they are to conduct their ministry in accordance with these necessary regulations.

It is recommended to Unity School of Christianity that candidates for ordination not be ordained before they have successfully passed this examination.

ARTICLE 14. The President of Unity School of Christianity shall be an ex-officio member of the Executive Board and shall be notified of its meetings.

CODE OF ETHICS UNITY MINISTERS' ASSOCIATION

Adopted at Kansas City, Mo. August 24, 1934

I

The Unity ministry is and shall be maintained as a holy ministry conducted in the name of Jesus Christ, to the glory of God, and in service to mankind.

II

The motto of this group shall be, "We look to Christ as the directive head of this movement, inspiring, guiding, and prospering us."

Ill

We will always and in every way within our ability assist in the advancement of the influence and power of any center in which we visit or speak. We will always recommend its ministry and services both publicly and privately to all within its territory.

IV

We will not seek in any way, directly or indirectly, to draw to us correspondents or personal students from any center or group in which we have been a guest speaker.

In any center or group in which we have been a student, we will fully co-operate with and obtain the approval of the leader of the group or center, as well as co-operate with the Field Department of Unity School, before we perform in any way, directly or indirectly, a personal healing ministry, or begin any personal or group teaching.

44

VI

We will not attempt to carry on Unity work in any city without first obtaining the full approval of the Field Department for such work and obtaining the co-operation of already active and progressive Unity leaders in that vicinity.

VII

We recognize the advisability of the Field Department's sanctioning the establishment of an additional center in any city where statistics and information show that the field is not already adequately covered.

VIII

It is the sense of this organization that we work in perfect harmony and accord with the Field Department of Unity School in our speaking and teaching program, that we place no speaker or teacher on our platform who is not acceptable to the Field Department, and that we consult the Field Department whenever the teacher, lecturer, or course of lessons is subject to doubt,

IX

It is incumbent upon each and every member of the Unity Ministers' Association to hold in esteem and respectful regard all fellow members and to use all rightful means to protect the personal and professional honor of every other member.

X

Each member shall also respect the work, both public and private, of his fellow members, shall uphold them in their endeavor to carry on the practices and duties of the Christian ministry, and shall render at any and all times such co-operative assistance as may be solicited and mutually agreed upon, no mem-

45

ber opportunity to look over the revisions, study them, and to write the new president, Lillian M. Matthews, if he has additional ideas that he wishes considered. Next year at the conference the Executive Board will make any final changes that seem advisable and will then present the report to the conference body for disposition.

The motion carried that the U.M.A. Journal, which was conducted on an experimental basis for this conference be:

1. Carried on for another year on a similar basis.

2. That a committee of six be appointed by the Executive Board of the U.M.A. to work with the Editorial Department to formulate a set of standards and editorial policies specifically for the Journal and to seek the co-operation of the Editorial Department of Unity School in carrying out the Journal on this basis.

3. The committee to make a plan for this year's issue, to solicit and screen material to see that it meets the new set of Journal standards as agreed upon.

4. All material thus accumulated and approved by the committee to be turned over to Unity School for publication through its normal channels of editing, printing, and distribution.

The committee appointed to work on the Journal is: Sue Sikking, chairman; Eric Butter-worth, Ernest C. Wilson, Alma M. Morse, Warren Meyer, and Herbert J. Hunt.

(PREVIOUS ASSOCIATION DECISIONS)

At the 1952 conference of the Unity Ministers' Association, the Executive Board voted

48

to go on record as upholding the Unity Field Department in enforcing the Constitution, Code of Ethics, and Bylaws of the Unity Ministers' Association.

Uniform Course of Study The uniform course of study adopted by the

Unity Ministers' Association as a standard course of study in Unity centers remains as follows:

LESSONS IN TRUTH CHRISTIAN HEALING TALKS ON TRUTH BIBLE INTERPRETATION THE SILENCE (recommended each year) This course of study is arranged for indi

vidual soul growth and development and not for the training of teachers. The services and classes in Unity centers are designed to appeal to the student mind. People today are realizing how much it means to develop the mind toward spiritual understanding, and it is the purpose of the centers to give the individual opportunity for education in the things of the Spirit.

Those desiring to serve as teachers should get in touch with Unity School direct, study the Unity Correspondence School Course, and attend the Training School.

Important Records It is important that Unity centers keep a

record of all public services in the center. A permanent record should be kept of all marriages, infant christenings, and spiritual baptisms of children and adults, and if a center is disbanded, the records should be sent to the Field Department.

Licensed Ministers and Licensed Teachers At the 1941 conference, it was decided that

49

Page 26: NITY XNISTERS' SSOCIATION · nity xnisters' ssociation yearbook year ending juxy, 1956 affiliated with hool of christianity lee's summit, missouri

teachers be designated as licensed teachers or as licensed ministers according to the kind of work they are doing. The leader of a center should be designated as a licensed minister and the teacher serving in connection with it or conducting classwork as a licensed teacher.

Listing of Leaders with Mailing Address

The listing in the UNITY magazine directory will omit the names of those with a mailing address only. The directory is to list only the addresses of Unity centers and classes. The purpose of the directory is to inform the public where they may receive a teaching and healing ministry. Therefore, all Association members and licensed ministers and teachers with a mailing address only will be listed in the Unity Ministers' Association Yearbook but not in the UNITY magazine directory.

Delegates

In order that the Credentials Committee may more efficiently register delegates attending the conference, delegate application blanks in duplicate are to be sent to each Association member and licensed minister in charge of a center at the time the leader 's membership application blank is mailed. The original delegate blank is to be returned to Ralph Rhea, Secretary-Treasurer of the Unity Ministers' Association. The delegate will b e required to present the duplicate blank at the time of registration in order to obtain his delegate badge.

Each center may send to the conference one delegate, who will have the privilege of sitting in on all business meetings.

Dispensation from Field Department

The clause "teacher working under dis-

50

pensation from the Field Department," inserted in Article 6 of the Bylaws, was made to protect a center that is left temporarily without a leader but that continues to cooperate with the Field Department until another leader can be supplied. The center in this way works temporarily "under dispensation from the Field Department" and continues as an authorized center.

Voting Privileges

While only members of the Unity Ministers' Association present at the conference meetings have the privilege of voting, licensed ministers and teachers are invited to attend all business meetings. They may also present questions and suggestions to the Board in writing.

Past Presidents

In 1937, the motion carried that all past presidents of the Association be made honorary members of the Board, to serve as silent helpers without the privilege of vote or discussion. As a result of this motion, it was also decided that all past presidents should be made members of the Devotional Committee to serve from year to year. Those who have served as president of the Association are Frederick E. Andrews, 1933; Louise C. Newman, 1934; Rex Morgan, 1935; Jessie G. Maloney, 1936; Louis E. Meyer, 1937; Georgi-a n a Tree West, 1938; Irwin E. Gregg, 1939; Laura Hyer, 1940; E. Roy Feldt, 1941; Ida M. Palmer, 1942; Earl B. Anthony, 1943; Rose Emery, 1944; Herbert J. Hunt, 1945; Edith M. Berry, 1946; Ernest C. Wilson, 1947; Mae G. Lundahl, 1948; W. I. Hoschouer, 1949; Louise C. Beaty, 1950; C. N. Broadhurst, 1951; Alma M. Morse, 1952; Dale Newsum, 1953; Fannie A. Baldwin, 1954, and Eric Butterworth, 1955.

QUALinCATIONS FOR ORDINATION

A candidate for ordination must have completed the Correspondence School Course and have acquired 45 credits in the Training School. He (or she) must have conducted for at least one year a center ministry that will show the Ordination Committee that his (or her) teaching and ethics are of the Christ standard. After having been in charge of a full-time center ministry for a period of one year, each licensed minister will either be invited to be ordained or will be notified the reasons for postponing ordination.

These requirements are merely prerequisites, and their completion does not necessarily mean that a student will be ordained. The distinction of ordination is conferred by invitation upon those who have proved their worthiness by their training and by the character of their work in the field. There are many factors to consider, and the matter is left to the discretion of the Ordination Committee, which consists of nine members and executives of Unity School.
