TEMBLOR DE SALSA Y SABOR

ESTREMECE AL AREA DE LA BAHIA DE

SAN FRANCISCO

Nosotros escribimos,

producimos, grabamos e interpretamos solamente nuestro

propio material original.

ARTISTAS?

hacernos nuestro propio camino, ¿me entiendes?

Nosotros

nuestras manos, estamos felices y vamos pa’ lante.

nosotros tenemos nuestro propio estilo.

Grammy, Manny Mieles, “Pequeño” Johnny Rivero, Harry

Adorno, Andy Guzman, Luisito Quintero, Los Rakas, Ruben

Rodríguez, José Dávila, Yeisson Villamar, Ivan Renta, John

Benítez, Alex Zapata, Alex Duque, Javier Olivencia, Orestes

Venceremos.

M: ¿QUÉ CONCIERTOS O EVENTOS TIENEN PROGRAMADOS

N: Nuestro nuevo CD titulado Venceremos Neftali Rosado

M: ¿ESTUDIASTE CANTO

Hayward.

Orestes Vilato y Mario Cabrera

mismo regresa.

Tú te vas a

genero. Queremos dar un reconocimiento especial a usted

Mario, Mariela y a International Salsa Magazine y Salsa

Mundi por la oportunidad. Muchas gracias.

juntos.

iPhone, Michael Jackson, Star Wars, Bob Marley,

Disney. What do these things have in common?

They are all icons and brands that have touched

virtually every part of the world. They have had

such vast global reach and influence that it would

probably be quite difficult to find someone who

has not heard of at least one of those things.

Salsa is no different! Bermuda is one of the world’s

smallest (21 sq. miles/53 sq. km) and most isolated

(640 miles/1,030 km west of North Carolina, USA)

inhabited landmasses. Though within its resident

population of just over 66,000, there is a

constantly-growing vibrant community of

passionate Latin dance and music lovers.

24

Page 25: International Salsa Magazine December 2012

[ ISM . CORRESPONDENTS . BERMUDA ]

www.internationalsalsa.com / www.salsamundi.com

Don’t let Bermuda’s tiny stature fool you: this 400-plus year-

old self-governing British colony provides a picturesque

subtropical home to some of the world’s largest

multinational companies; nearly every Fortune 500 company

has some link to the island, and it is considered one of the

top premier insurance jurisdictions in the world. Its relatively

stable political and economic environment, warm climate

(70°F / 23°C year-round average) and convenient daily direct

flights to USA, Canada, and UK make it an attractive

destination for work and play. All this means an increasingly

diverse guest worker population, and you guessed it…more

dancers!

Salsa dancing was introduced to the islandaround 1998 by a

handful of individuals who had caught the bug as a result of

vacations to Cuba and studying overseas. Informal salsa club

nights and classes followed, and formal Latin dance schools

were established over the next few years. “Bermy Style

Salsa” even evolved as a style combining elements of Cuban,

NYC, and LA style salsa. Now in 2012, the popularity of salsa

and other Latin dances has exploded, thanks to regular social

nights, performances, concerts and showcases, and of

course Dancing with the Stars. International salsa superstars

of the likes of Masacote, Henry Knowles and Willy Torres are

no strangers to our shores. Poncho Sanchez is even

scheduled for a two-night concert in January 2013. Local

jazz musicians occasionally add Latin rhythms to their

repertoire much to the delight of the dancers.

With the addition of other school and groups promoting

salsa dance and music, there is no shortage of opportunities

to get your dance on, as there is always at least one night of

the week where you can rub shoulders with local instructors

and dancers of all levels. Visitors looking to shake a leg

during their vacation often seek out the hot spots before

they arrive, and are always pleased to find a warm

reception.

In Bermuda, the dancing doesn’t stop with salsa; most

dancers enjoy a good Bachata as well. You will also find a

niche group of instructors and dancers of Tango, Hustle, Cha

Cha, Ballroom and most recently, Zouk and Kizomba.

Bermudians are notoriously well-travelled, attending

congresses and conventions on a regular basis.

"Miss Teresa Whitter appeared on the local Latin dance

scene January 2005 and her talent and passion for the dance

resulted in her setting a Sabor Dance School record for the

fastest person to ever progress from beginner student to

instructor/performer to date. With no formal dance training,

Teresa managed to overcome a considerable learning curve

in less than one year to become one of Bermuda’s most

talented Latin dancers. Teresa is a welcomed addition to the

Sabor staff of instructors and marks the beginning of the

next generation who will carry the Sabor culture into

the future. Teresa is broadly respected in Bermuda and

abroad for her dancing abilities and is a key member of the

senior dance company. Her classes are inspiring, technically

strong and full of laughter.Teresa specializes in salsa, casino

de rueda, bachata, merengue, cha cha, Hustle, ladies styling,

Argentine Tango, and choreography."

When I’m not dancing, I can be found with my nose in just

about any activity imaginable. I am also a member of

Bermuda’s only fire performance group, Rockfire Bermuda.

My (other) list of hobbies includes reading, sewing, cooking,

tennis, and most recently, classical guitar. I have dabbled

more obscure things like archery and Iaido (the art of the

Japanese sword) and other martial arts, and a little cross

(dance)-training in ballet, jazz and modern.

Having been a personal fitness trainer for 8 years and an

academic background in computer science, health and

fitness, dancing and dance instruction is only a natural

progression. I believe that social dancing, in any form, is the

ultimate way of connecting with another without the usual

social barriers in place. It allows complete freedom of mind

and body, and often I get so lost “in the zone” that I often

lose focus on my partner and what he’s doing! The music

takes me both inward and upward, to a place where only the

end of the song can bring me back to reality. I am truly

thankful for the ability to share my passion for salsa with my

students, and hope that one day they are able to feel the

‘rush’ that I experience when a fast, hot salsa duracomes on,

and I’m able to take the dance floor by storm.

We are living in turbulent and competitive world

where the highest, in most sectors, is to succeed

regardless of the way or ways to achieve it. "The

end justifies the means" as Maquiavelo said. If we

add to this the concept of globalization formula it

logically extends to all areas and countries.

Everything is changing, although some do not

notice and it is necessary to adapt to what is

happening but that does not mean that we lose

our values and principles, both personal and

professional, in any way. Entrepreneurship is

important but more important are the values and

principles that provide reliability, ethics, respect,

honesty, responsibility, honor (as currently

undervalued), among them.

In the case of Art, and La Salsa more specifically, we find

much of what we should not do concerning artists,

representatives agencies and/or managers and promoters,

of course. No need to go into details because it would be too

long and it is not a matter of blaming anyone but all involved

need to remember that the public is sovereign and art is

done for them, not for an artist, promoter or representative

in particular. It is the public who must be treated with

special care and to achieve this it is important and necessary

that the parties mentioned should be happy in show

business, supporting it with their personal and professional

values and principles.

Digging in this sense we have known The Cat 7 Productions,

based in Madrid, Spain, which keep on the roster of artists

several top singers, bands, dancers, DJs, and managed by

venezuelan Marcos "Cotton" Szczurek. A lover and defender

of the genres and Afro-Caribbean rhythms has also

accumulated experience in other sectors such as finance,

import / export, personal development coach, among

others, but says it is not necessary to take so much

experience, it is only necessary implement and give the best

of each one with dedication and perseverante always

looking forward to a job well done.

In the roster of artists we can to "The Cat" Jose Luis Morán,

venezuelan singer who has taken his Salsa even to countries

like the Sultanate of Oman, the first time in the history of

that country, Morrocco, Sweden, France, Germany, etc, as

well as another excellent singer as Luisito Rosario, who is

part of the Latin Legends of Fania directed by the legendary

Larry Harlow.

Bands like Spanish All Stars formed by musicians selected

from the best located in Spain who well support

International singers in their tours in Europe or the band

Calle Mora, specialist in Latin Jazz and Salsa Progressive, not

forgetting that the dance is an important part of Latin

Culture including first class dancers like Daniel & Desiree

Masters World Bachata (Spain), the Cuban instructor /

showman Guardiola Rafa "Olofi Son" acclaimed worldwide

and one of the greatest exponents of Afro-Cuban dance and

Maria Vela & José Aranda "Pure Passion", World Latin Dance

Champions Cup

All are part of a team of artists governed by a maxim, give

their best on stage for the public to enjoy with them and

vibrates with their performances. Even a “mark” of The Cat 7

Productions is that artists get off from the stage at the end

of their shows to share with the public getting closer to

them, laugh, talk, take photos and feel the energy that

audience gives in return to the energy they have given to

audience. Thus humility and simplicity is still present even in

artists who has been recognized worldwide because it is not

necessary to wear a suit of steaks to be noticed, for the

latter only have to give a little more than 100% in each

performance.

Finally we see a strong support to women in their role as DJ,

in fact unusual today, with DJ Natalia The Tropikal and DJ

Yolanda Verdegal. The first one with a unique flavor perhaps

by merging his own race of arab and vietnamese and

Yolanda, Dj pioneer in Spain, who enjoyed the Afro-

Caribbean rhythms even before birth by influence of her

parents. Complete team of Djs' "El Gato Beat", venezuelan

origin specialist in maintain high audiences with their mix of

genres not only fusing Caribbean but also other styles.

International Salsa Magazine 2012 December

Closes the roster of artists, and union/fusion results logic as

settled in Spain, one of the greatest exponents of the Rumba

Flamenca with singer manchego "El Chinchilla” with its

fusion of genre mentioned with ska, rock and reggae, and

the show "A Posteriori" pure flamenco dance with a strong

audiovisual support on stage formed by dancers from one of

the best and most well known flamenco dance companies

today.

From the above we can say that regardless of any situation,

any goal set or even despite the vices and other ways as

used in the latin entertainment world, latin artists can be

protected to give everything and art they have, protect and

provide value for serious promoters living them the true

costs for real and adjusted benefitis of parts envolved and,

above all, it is possible to give excellence to the public

enjoying the shows maintaining their status as sovereign.

The essential thing is respect and treatment/negotiation

based on the values and principles that we were taught as

children, and that should serves to motivate more people,

more entrepreneurs, to make the best of each one,

innovating, creating and working with perseverance and

dedication kepping an eye on the horizonte as it will be the

only legacy they will leave. Competition, as Marcos says, is

necessary and positive, to feel the breath of competition in

the neck is the main motivation to improve in every way and

this is the moment for the creation, or modification of

management policies of artists agencies, basing their action

on The Respect and Good Work in Latino Show Business.

Entonces me dijo:

Adalberto Santiago, Luigi Texidor, Meñique, Ismael Miranda,

Villalobos, Cley Giraldo, Emilio Mena, David Montes, Willie

Fulanito Malanga – Autor: Julio Mena. Recordando historias

Superstition – Autor: Steve Wonder.

disfruten.”

VENEZUELA’S BAILATINO

EXPLOSIVE MUSIC 4 YOUR COLLECTION

Bailatino, one of the finest of Venezuela's contemporary

Salsa orchestras have put out their latest recording

"Aniversario". Their horn sound is defined by their two

trombone and flute attack. Veteran percussionist Jose

"Cheo" Navarro leads this fine band through a swinging

repertoire of Salsa, Descarga, Cha Cha and Latin Jazz. Edgar

"Dolor" Quijada (what a great nickname for a vocalist) leads

Bailatino's charged vocal trio throughout the entire cd.

Venezuela has some of the finest musicians playing in the

Salsa and Latin Jazz genres. Bailatino keeps raising the bar in

terms of bringing interesting and challenging arrangements

to compliment their ferocious swing. This is evident in

"Aniversario" when you listen to a tune such as "Donde

Estara Margot" (the single from the cd) or "La Vampira". Do

not overlook this cd among the many fine new Salsa

recordings that this season has to offer. This is worth

seeking out.

MUSICIAN - DANCER - TEACHER

"TO DANCE WELL IS THE MOST

MARVELOUS THING THAT EXISTS"

Thirty-five years of performing and instructing

Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance and Cuban Popular

Dance has enabled Roberto Borrell to develop a

unique and entertaining style of teaching.

At a time when elegance and style counted for

everything Roberto Borrell turned the nights on

fire dancing to the intricate rhythms of great

Cuban performers such as Chappottin, Orquesta

Aragon and Neno Gonzalez. He learned to dance

during the heyday of the legendary Havana Social

Clubs. Perfecting what is known as Cuban Popular

Dance, Roberto became a master of Danzon, Son,

Son-Montuno, Guaracha and the Cha-Cha-Cha.

When Roberto was 18 he was noticed by Cuba's Conjunto

Folklorico Nacional and asked to join the celebrated

performance group. In a trial by-fire situation he was

schooled in the traditional Orisha songs, dances and rhythms

by the most renowned Afro-Cuban folkloric dancers and

percussionists of the time. His innate talent and facility for

learning allowed him to start performing with the group

immediately.

As Roberto continued to develop his performance skills he

began to cultivate his abilities as a choreographer and

musical director. Starting as the orchestra leader for his own

group in Cuba , Union Cienfueguera, through to his highly

successful San Francisco based orchestra, Moderna

Tradcion, he continued to direct musical groups and shows

for over 30 years.

By the time Roberto left Cuba he had developed a wealth of

knowledge and a diverse mastery of Cuban music and dance

which also included dancing Rumba en la calle, excelling in

playing the Bata for Tambores (Yoruba religious

ceremonies), choreographing for Carnival and performing on

the National Stage.

In order to get the highly tuned performances that he

required for his shows, Roberto began to train the dancers

and musicians himself. Once in New York, Roberto focused

his energy on teaching. With an authentic historic

perspective, he worked on creating a meticulous method of

teaching that combines music and dance with the evolution

of Cuba's musical history. He teaches his students how to

listen; one of the most valuable skills that a dancer can have.

Along with a surplus of charm and charisma, Roberto has a

generosity of spirit that transpires and inspires all of his

students.

I was born in Vienna and also grew up there. In the early

90ies I got into contact with Latin-American friends,

discovered their culture and also the Latin-American cuisine.

During a journey to Curacao, Venezuela and Colombia in

1995, I found my passion for Latin-American music. And this

passion got me like a virus - which since then, never let me

go.

Musica latina, the music of Latin America, the different

styles from the different countries of Latin America.

Soon I started to collect this music. From various journeys to

Latin America I brought a lot of musical and personal

experiences, which did influencing my life till today.

Back to Vienna, I began - with all these experiences and

impressions - to concentrate myself more and more on that

music. During my dance training, I got from my dancing

teacher a lot of information about musical styles and theory

that were very important and helpful for my recent work

with the music.

EL RUBIO LOCO

In 1997 I started my first attempts as a DJ. I developed my

personal style and technique and also found my absolute

love for Salsa, which got deeper and deeper.

An outstanding experience was the participation at the Salsa

Congress in Puerto Rico (2001), where I got contact to the

international scenery and the DJs there.

Since then I try not only to play music, but especially to

respond to the wishes of my guests.

Meanwhile my favorite salsa style is somewhere in between

Salsa/Tropical and Salsa Cubana, which is very much

appreciated by Rueda-dancers, who appreciate my style

(Clave mixed on one).

[ ISM . BOOKS ]

www.internationalsalsa.com / www.salsamundi.com

Authored by Alex Sosa

The purpose of this book is to guide Salsa dancers to have a

conscious spiritual experience whilst dancing, bringing

awareness of what is really happening inside the dancer's

mind and body during that magical moment when the body

is connected and moving to the rhythm of the music. It is to

guide the dancer to not just dance with the body but to

dance with the Spirit; at the end, it is the Spirit which moves

our bodies.

This is the first book in the Salsa market that explain to the

dancer what is really happening inside his mind and body

from a spiritual point of view, helping the dancer to connect

the outside or physical body with the inside or spiritual one,

to finally become one in love, peace and harmony with

himself, and to achieve the greatest happiness for the dancer

and for the people around him, it is a changing life book.

FIRST: Remember at all times that you don't have two left

feet. You are powerful beyond imagination. Be positive and

confident about yourself.

SECOND: Be grateful for the creation of your body, and also

for the possibility to be able to communicate through it and

express your emotions dancing with other people. Enjoy

your journey.

THIRD: Open your mind and see energy around you, with

you, and inside you. Improve your dance with the

understanding of yourself; knowing that you are energy,

dance with your Spirit. Remember: E=mc2 (everything is

energy).

FOURTH: Remember that your emotions are an energy

system given to you to guide you to a personal realization,

listen to them and be a happy dancer.

FIFTH: Everything in the universe is interconnected and

moving in synchronicity like a clock, and that is rhythm.

Keep it that way, dance in Clave.

SIXTH: We are humans. We are social beings by nature.

Don't be shy and ask others for a dance, help others to

decide asking them for a dance. Time gone is happiness

gone.

SEVENTH: Become what you really want. Make people

happy on the way to your happiness. Dancing for others is

dancing with your Spirit.
