INTERVIEW

  • International Salsa Magazine / Aug 2015 7

    INTERVIEW

  • International Salsa Magazine / Aug 2015 9

  • International Salsa Magazine / Aug 201510

    INTERVIEW

Having recorded more than 50 albums, this inter-nationally acclaimed artist and composer has been awarded 12 Gold and 5 Platinum records, as well as 7 Grammys. He is estimated to have sold more than 4 million records. Gil has also been awarded numerous prizes, both in Brazil and internationally, as recognition of his commitment to, like Bob Marley, using his music as a vehicle for so-cial change. He has been described as: a unique composer, powered by immense talent and curi-osity, as well as an excep-tional musical ambassa-dor, motivated by deeply spiritual, cultural and so-cial convictions.

Gilberto Gil was born Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira in 1942 in Salvador, the capital of the north- eastern Bra-zilian state of Bahia- one of the countrys poorest. His father, Jos Gil Moreira, was a doctor; his mother, Clau-dina Passos Gil Moreira, an elementary school teacher.

    GILBERTO GIL:RENAISSANCE

MANHe spent much of his childhood in the nearby small town of Ituau located in the serto (countryside), of Bahia where he attended a Marist Brothers school. He returned to Salvador at age 9 to attend Second-ary School, as well as a musical academy where he re-mained for 4 years. At an early age, encouraged by his

mother, he began to play the drums, trumpet and accordion. As an accor-dionist, Gil initially played classical music, but grew more interested in the folk and popular music of Brazil.

In the 1960s, his collabo-rations with a fellow Ba-hiano, Caetano Veloso, re-

sulted in intensely eclectic musical styles, which were offensive to many of the more conservative sectors of what was at that time virtually a feudal military dictator-ship. The movements referred to as Tropicalia or Tropi-calism, and Musica Popular Brasileira were radically in-novative in the music scene. With Gil at the forefront,

they assimilated funk, rock rhythms and pop culture into national genres. As was to be the case in the 1970s on the tiny island of Jamaica- another musical trea-sure house, not only the musical styles but the lyrics, as well as the deeply felt emotions underlying them, both threat-ened and infuriated those who yielded political, economic and social power. Tropicalism was generally violently re-pressed. Veloso and Gil, in particular, were viewed as threats by the authori-tarian military regime that ruled Brazil at the time and were imprisoned for nine months before being forced to leave their homeland. Gil moved to London, but returned to his home state of Bahia in 1972 and continued his musical career, as well as his work as a social activist, politician and envi-ronmental advocate.

In a context in which those of more pronounced African physical features are routinely discriminated against and still constitute the majority of the poor, margin-alized and disenfranchised in Brazil, Gil has shattered many barriers. He was only a teenager when he joined his first band. He began his career as a Bossa Nova mu-sician, but his music never ceases to evolve to higher and ever more innovative levels. During more than half a century, Gils musical repertoire has reflected an eclectic range of influences, including Rock music; Asian Zen styles; numerous Brazilian genres; African music, and reggae. However, he explained, in fluent English, to the captive audience at the James Knight Center on April 26 2015, that he would be going back to his Bossa Nova roots that evening.

Gil is a Renaissance man. Like another intensely patri-otic and multi-faceted giant of Latin American music -the Panamanian Rubn Blades- he is a man of many talents and interests. Not only a constantly evolving and brilliant musician, Gil is also a champion of both Human and Civil Rights and one of the first black Bra-zilians to be a member of a Presidential cabinet. Al-though not a member of Lulas party, he accepted the latters request to serve as Minister of Culture for five years (2003-2008). Pel was the first black Brazilian to be a minister, when he served as the Minister of Sports from 1995-1998.

At the James Knight Theatre concert in Miami that night, the public experi-enced a more mellow, low-key Gil. The dreadlocks which he wore, even during the period in which he was Lulas Min-ister of Culture, were replaced by a low-cut hairstyle. His mood was pensive and reflective. In fact, in, he actually spoke more than he sang and played. Now in his 70s, he spoke at length about the de-velopment of his musical career, as well as what point he sees himself as being at currently. As many who are into the in-ternational Reggae scene will acknowl-

edge, some of the best proponents of this genre are now from Brazil, many from some of the most marginal communities, including urban favelas (slums). The fact that Reggae is now so entrenched in this country of over 200 million citizens can be traced to a large extent to Gils early collaborations with Jimmy Cliff.

On June 25 of this year, Gil initiated a European tour with his collaborator and friend of half a century, Caetano Veloso. The tour is entitled: CAETANO & GIL-TWO FRIENDS, ONE CENTURY OF MUSIC. Much of the inspiration came from the Gilbertos Samba tour, of which the concert in Miami was a part. This was a tribute to Joao Gilberto who, along with Jobim and Vinicius, was a creator of the Bossa Nova. Many of the songs Gil played at this concert were reinterpretations of old classics. Gil and Caetano are currently celebrat-ing their collaborations and friendship with concerts in the following countries: Holland, Belgium, France, England, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Monaco, Portugal and Israel.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present the Exclusive NYC Appearance of one of Cu-bas most spectacular bands, LOS VAN VAN, who bring direct from Cuba their blend of Afro-Cuban, disco and funk back to Lehman Center as part of the bands U.S. Tour celebrating their 45th Anniversary on Saturday, August 8th, 2015 at 8pm. Led by Samuel Formell, son of founder Juan Formell, fans can expect to hear the groups greatest hits along with the work from their more current releases including their latest album La Fantasa. Produced by Lehman Center and Leo Tizol.

Los Van Van, nicknamed the Cuban Music Train, is regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of 20th century Cuban popular music. Founded in 1969 by Juan Formell when he was 27 years old, the band pioneered Songo, a hybrid rhythm that blended Cubas native folkloric son music with the go-go of the 1970s and has electrified dance floors in Havana for over forty-five years. The bands original members Juan Formell (bandleader, bass player, and songwriter), Csar Pupy Pedroso (piano, songwriter), and Jose Luis

Changuito Quintana (drums and timbales) were music conservatory trained from a young age and were fascinated with the soul, go-go and disco music that dominated U.S. radio. They named their dance band Los Van Van (which literally means they go-go) after the go-go fad, and pioneered the hybrid of son and go-go music Songo which can now be found through-out Latin jazz, pop, and world fusion. Songo also served as the title to their breakthrough 13th album in 1988 which was released internationally on Mango records.

Shortly after the bands formation, they became the islands favorite dance band and came to be known for their sophisticated, often satirical lyrics chronicling the realities of Cuban life, electric instrumentation and multi-layered percussion. In addition to the traditional Cuban charanga band lineup of violins and flutes, Los Van Van also featured multiple trombones and vocalists that, along with Changuitos virtuosity on drums and timbales, really set them apart. Starting with the song Pero a mi manera (1972) which introduced harmonies and arranging concepts new to Latin music, Formell and

Pedroso wrote dance hit after hit, many of which have become standards of Cuban music. With the support of the Cuban government, the band toured tirelessly and recorded throughout the 80s and 90s. And if the ge-nius of Songo wasnt enough, they also developed the complex rhythmic style that became known as Timba that was adapted by other bands in the 90s. Los Van Van soon became one of the best-known Cuban groups in the world, maintaining a loyal fan base throughout Latin America, Europe and Japan propelled by hits like: La sandunguera, Anda, ven y muvete, Te traigo and Yuya Martnez.

In 1993 Changuito left the band and was replaced by Formells son Samuel who also proved to be an outstanding composer as evidenced by songs like Te pone la cabeza mala, the title track of one of their best albums. Although American politics hindered their ability to break into the U.S. market, their popularity in the U.S. grew throughout the 90s, and the band toured the U.S. for the first time in 1997, including a memora-ble concert at Lehman Center. In 1999, Los Van Van was honored with the GRAMMY Award for Best Salsa Per-formance for their fifteenth album, LlegVan Van Van Van is Here and in 2013, the Latin Recording Acad-emy awarded Juan Formell with a special Grammy for

a Lifetime Achievement of Artistic Excellence. With over 40 albums to their credit, Los Van Vans latest album Ho-menaje A Juan Formell: La Fantasa, was 80% complet-ed at the time of Juan Formells death and was finished under the direction of his son Samuel with another son, Juan Carlos Formell. The albums release in December, 2014 was on the 45th anniversary of the bands found-ing and it features several of the bands hit dance tracks refreshed with contemporary arrangements as well as many new songs including four new compositions by the master, Juan Formell.

Method One of Four: Mastering the Basicsm.wikihow.com/Dance-Salsa

Start in the closed dance position. The lead takes his partners right hand in his left and places his right hand on her left

shoulder blade. The partner should keep her left hand on his right shoulder, with her arm over his.Or start in the hand-in-hand position. The lead has his palms facing upwards, and the partner takes his hands with

her palms down. This allows for more freedom of movement.

Have good posture. When dancing, you should always keep your spine straight, your chin up and your shoulders back. Your chest should naturally then puff out a bit.

Your body should be held with strength at all points.[1]Always look up. Keep your head held up or tilted to look at your partner. Do

not look at your feet or your partners. Looking at your feet is a dead giveaway that youre nervous and not sure what youre doing.

Keep your arms bent at a 90 degree angle from the elbows.[2] In this position, your hands are most easily accessible to your partner. Your arm should rest on

    horizontal plane.

Move your hips. Most of the movement in the Salsa comes from the hips, so you will want to keep your hips loose. Dont be afraid to sway your hips. Even if youre just moving your foot, know that a slight hip movement goes along with it. If you move your right foot out, your

right hip juts out a bit, too.

Choose a song that has a 4/4 beat (four beats to the bar) and a fast tem-po[2]. Youll want music that lies somewhere between 160-220 beats

per minute.[3] Before you start a song, make sure that you can keep up with the speed and identify the beats for your steps.

Count as you listen to the song. If you count out the beats in the music, you will be able to find the Salsa beat and identify which

steps go with which beat. If you cant keep count while youre listening to the song, its best to choose a different one.

4/4 time is counted in 8-counts. Youll be doing one standard Salsa step in 8 beats.

    PortadaIsabelle LeymarieEdiciones B, 1997 - 128 pginas

    JAZZ LATINO

    Isabelle LeymarieEdiciones Robinbook, 1 ene. 2005 - 202 pginas

SALSA AND LATIN BOOKSLA MSICA CUBANA: CUBA, VOLUMEN 1

    PortadaIsabelle LeymarieOcano Grupo Editorial, 2003

SPINNING MAMBO INTO SALSACARIBBEAN DANCE IN GLOBAL COMMERCE

    Juliet McMains

Spinning Mambo into Salsa, a history of salsa dance, focuses on its evolu-tion in three major hubs for international commercial export-New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The book examines how commercialized salsa dance in the 1990s departed from earlier practices of Latin dance, es-pecially 1950s mambo. Topics covered include generational differences between Palladium Era mambo and modern salsa; mid-century anteced-ents to modern salsa in Cuba and Puerto Rico; tension between salsa as commercial vs. cultural practice; regional differences in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami; the role of the Web in salsa commerce; and adapta-tions of social Latin dance for stage performance. Throughout the book, salsa dance history is linked to histories of salsa music, exposing how in-creased separation of the dance from its musical inspiration has precipi-tated major shifts in Latin dance practice. As a whole, the book dispels the belief that one version is more authentic than another by showing how competing styles came into existence and contention. Based on over 100 oral history interviews, archival research, ethnographic partici-pant observation, and analysis of Web content and commerce, the book is rich with quotes from practitioners and detailed movement description.

SALSA AND LATIN BOOKSBEYOND SALSA FOR BEGINNERS: THE CUBAN TIMBA REVOLUTION. AN INTRODUCTION TO LATIN MUSIC FOR DANCERS & LISTENERS

This is Kevin Moores first book for non-musicians liste-ners, dancers and fans of Latin music. The four Listening Tours included in the book are: I. Pre-Revolution Cuban Popular Music (1900-1959); II. Salsa and Post-Revolution Cuban Popular Music (1959-1989); Timba (1989-2012); and a special section covering Afro-Cuban Folkloric Mu-sic, Comparsa, Chang and Rumba. The rhythm exerci-ses include the basic rhythms of each instrument, clave, various types of basic dance steps, a section on learning to feel the Latin groove properly, and a special chapter on the problems that new listeners of Afro-Cuban folklo-ric music sometimes have with hearing the beat and meter correctly.

BEYOND SALSA PERCUSSION-THE CUBAN TIMBA REVOLUTION: AN INTRODUCTION TO LATIN RHYTHMS

FOR BEGINNING DRUMS AND TIMBALES: 1

This book presents an encyclopedic selection of all the basic rhythm parts used on timbales and drums in Latin music (salsa, timba, Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms, rumba, danzn, chachach et al). The central premise is for the student to master each rhythm by singing and tapping before attempting to play it on an instrument, so as to avoid bad habits of technique during the critical period when the rhythm is being memorized and internalized. To accommodate as many learning styles as possible, each rhythm is presented in eight ways: two types of standard notation, two types of graphic or box notation, full speed audio, slow motion audio, and two speeds using a special task-by-task learning method where the rhythm is learned one stroke at a time against a steady rhythmic accompaniment.
