Th e Power of Dreams.

Words teach, things work, dreams lead: there is nothing in the world stronger and speedier and powerful than a dream. Behind any single motion, behind any single eff ort, behind all our love and even behind all our fear there is a dream.

A dream makes each day diff erent from the previous and the next one. A dream makes everything and every person diff erent from all the others. A dream fuels our imagination, enlightens our minds, feeds our hearts and allows us every day to know that we are alive, that we are on the right way or on the wrong one. A dream is that magical spark that will make us always say: I can do it!

“If a person has no more dreams, he does not have a reason for living. Dreaming is necessary even if in the dream there must be a glimpse of reality. For me this is one of the keys of life.”

I am a designer and I am wired to be innovational and forward thinking. To innovate I have to be creative and curious. Consequently, I need inspiration. So what inspires me? Well, it’s the “Why” that inspires me. Th e “What” and the “how” are simple to answer while the ‘Why’ is more tricky. Mostly, a designer strives to challenge the status-quo in order to make life happier, more comfortable and more emotional for all of us. Th e way we dothis is to question and challenge the current paradigms; we imagine, innovate, adapt and progress. I describe this as a type of winning but to really win, one must lift the competitive bar of life so that it reaches a new level. Th is takes a constant internal drive towards innovation and this brings us closer to being the best we can be. Life, for a designer, is about achieving a sense of accomplishment by making the world a better place. All creative work is important when it’s done well and is useful to society. Doing our best requires pride in what we do and that we have the integrity to achieve our goals. Th is, in turn, enriches the lives of other people, making life for all of us much more meaningful, fulfi lling and rewarding. We must challenge ourselves to think outside of tradition or we would never have anything that is truly groundbreaking. To do this we must let go of logic, logic only takes us from here to somewhere, while imagination has the power to take us everywhere. It’s this gift of the power to imagine that gives us a preview of both the future and life’s coming allures. What we dream of and create in the present moment is the future unfolding. Albert Einstein famously said thatimagination is more important than knowledge and thatcreativity is intelligence having fun. What a joy then to have the opportunity to imagine, create and innovate... to make the world a better place! What inspires you now and how can you be creative today?

A secret salt lake location in country Victoria, a rare 1960s English racecar and a collection of impecca-ble suiting set a dazzling tone in a new campaign

for men’s fashion designer Dom Bagnato.Sourcing a 1965 McLaren Can/Am racecar as inspiration for the shoot, renowned fashion photographer James Pipi-no has created a striking collection of images “that celebra-te a love of fashion, automobiles and fi ne craft smanship”.Along side the rare racecar, Chadwick’s model Jaymes Tri-glone contributes to the aesthetic, evoking 1960a era where team owners, engineers and drivers would arrive at the track in full suits.Built by McLaren-Elva in 1965, the McLaren MIB 30/05 Can-Am saw considerable competitive usage in the Cana-dian-American Sports Car Series from 1966 to 1969. Du-ring this time, it raced against some of the world’s most notable drivers including Formula One world champions

Denny hulme, John Surtees, Jackie Stuart, Phill hill, Gra-ham hill and Mario Andretti.Aft er going through a number of owners and being left idle for decades, the car eventually received a ten-year long re-storation. It began competing in historic races in the US before it was bought by an English collector in 2006 who ran it in similar historic events in the UK, before selling it to its current owner, Australian collector who shipped it to the country in late 2012. Th e car raced for the fi rst time on Australian soil in 2013, competing in the Phillip Island Classic and Australian F1 Grand Prix. Grand Prix

GERMANY

The eighth round of the season, which took place at Sachsen-ring circuit - a highly dramatic weekend with some riders that suff ered huge crashes! Aft er the fi rst free practice Jorge

Lorenzo’s pace looked crushing… until he crashed in the Friday’s aft ernoon session. A big high-side damaged the titanium plate hol-ding together his already broken – in Assen – left collarbone. Th en Dani Pedrosa was the favorite to win on Sunday, as he had won the last three races. But Repsol Honda’s rider crashed aft er a high-side one day later and injured his collarbone too. Aft er that, Pedrosa missed a chance to extend his leading in the championship over Lo-renzo, as both of them were absent from Sunday’s race.In that occasion Marc Marquez scored his second pole position of the season on Saturday, but aft er a poor start on Sunday he dropped to fourth place. Even if Valentino Rossi took the lead in the fi rst corner, at the end of the fi rst lap, Stefan Bradl passed him. Th e local hero was leading for the next six laps, but was soon overtaken fi r-stly by Marquez and then by Rossi. In the meantime Cal Crutchlow fought back aft er losing a lot of time on the start. With eleven laps to go, the British rider took the second place from Rossi… even if rider number #35, Crutchlow, was heading to the race with injuries on his arms, hands and left leg.

Even if it looked that Crutchlow will score his fi rst-ever victory, in the end Marc Marquez was too strong for him. Th e 20-year-old Spaniard had in Germany his second win of the season by only 1.6 seconds over Cal. Th anks to that triumph, this year rookie was able to retake the world championship lead. Valentino Rossi claimed a second consecutive podium aft er his return to winning ways in As-sen. Th e fourth place went for local hero Stefan Bradl, while another Honda’s rider, Alvaro Bautista was fi ft h. Bradley Smith’s sixth place confi rmed two British riders in the top six of premier class race for the fi rst time in two decades!

RACE WEEK

Stefan Bradl did not have time to rest aft er the Dutch TT, as before the German round he went to Argentina. Th ere, for two days with few other riders, he was testing at Termas de Rio Hondo circuit. As the

round at the Sachsenring circuit is the home Grand Prix for LCR Honda MotoGP’s rider, he came there double motivated aft er scoring in Assen his fi rst front row start in premier class. Aft er progression in the last couple of rounds, the 23-year-old from Munich started his home round with setting the fourth fastest time in the fi rst free practice. A few hours later, in FP2, he gave his fans something to celebra-te, as he was the fastest! Saturday was also a good day, as in the aft ernoon Bradl was fi ghting for pole position once again. Unfortunately a small crash aff ected his fi nal performance and he scored fourth place on the grid of his home race.On Sunday Stefan did a really good start and aft er he attacked Valentino Rossi at the end of the fi rst lap, the German rider was leading in the German Grand Prix! He began to battle with the front guys, but at the end he mis-sed an opportunity to fi nish on the podium at Sachsenring. Home fans saw LCR’s rider fi nishing in fourth and equaling his best career result.

“I think it was a good weekend for us even if we missed the chance to achieve the podium – said Stefan aft er the race. - Actually I have done a good start and I was capable to lead the race for some laps but, when the guys passed me, I could see that they had more corner speed especially in section 2, which was the weak point for us. We have been very competitive and very fast in the remaining sections so we are pretty satisfi ed about our job. Okay… I missed the chance to reward my Team and my crowd with a podium fi nish but we do not give up and we will keep on fi ghting in La-guna. I especially want to thank my fans… I could feel their great support these days and it was something special to me.”

“It’s a great result for us – said the rider from Munich right aft er the race. - We did a good job all across the weekend. Of course expecta-tions were high aft er I had pole yesterday, but I knew I had good speed and that I could be fast from the beginning. I tried to push from the start and I think I did that very well. I struggled a little bit. I thought the race speed would be a little quicker but, with the full tank of fuel, I had a few problems with the front. When Marc caught me I saw that he had some more edge grip on the tyre and that he was able to open up a gap. I just tried to manage the gap to Valentino (Rossi), which was not easy, and it was a long and tough race. Sure I want to thank Lucio, the whole team and all the fans and I am happy to have my dad here with me to celebrate this important result together!”

One of the most successful motorcycle riders of all time, Angel Nieto, going on the grid with a historical Derbi 50cc

Page 69: INSPIRE August 2013

The official opening of the Circuit of Jarama (Cir-cuito del Jarama) in 1967, was a momentous mi-lestone in the long history of Race. Designed by

John Hugenholtz, the circuit was built by Alessandro Rocci north of Madrid with a length of 3,404 km. After so many years the circuit still has an excellent surface for a great challenge of any sporting competition. Since the circuit was built, the layout never changed, it has a short straight and most of the course consists of tight, twisty corners so overtaking is very difficult. The last Formula One race was held at the circuit 1981 and the last MotoGP race was held 1998, when it was conside-red too narrow for modern racing.

From then until today, it still holds occasional sports car and motorcycle races. Those and many other smal-ler events have made the circuit of Jarama be establi-shed as one of the most important circuits worldwide.

One of the most exciting and greatest happenings is the Jarama Vintage Festival that offers the whole family motor sport, fashion, music and games from yester-day. At the small paddock visitors are transported to the past, a trip back in time to the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, full of attractions, characters and more. It was an event that brought nostalgia to the most romantic times of motorcycling and motoring. Legendary motor bikes like Honda NSR, MV Agusta, Derbi, Ossa and Minarel-li, just to name a few, were back on track with famous and legendary motorcycle riders like Angel Nieto, Jorge Martinez Aspar, Eugenio Lazzarini, Pier Paolo Bianchi and Carlos Lavado and more. You were a witness of a performance where three generations shared a past that became present.

Other championships also occupied the track, as the Historic Endurance Racing, Touring and GT prior to 1975. Single-cylinder bikes, vintage motocross and classic trial filled the circuit with gasoline odor. But be-sides the part on the engine, Jarama Vintage Festival has a large market with Classic Cars that collectibles of-fered… and even real cars for sale. It has become tradi-tion that in a spectacular circus tent actors with vintage costumes perform at the event. The classic cars circulate around the paddock and you can visit a military camp of World War II, ridden by Historical Reconstruction associations, wearing their uniforms, armor and artillery. The Jarama Vintage Festival was much more than a mo-tor event: it was a door in time to enjoy with the whole family. So if this year you have missed it, try not to do the next. Come to see a different event with a special atmosphere far beyond anything you have seen before.

Ayrton Senna

Ayrton grew up with engines, speed and kerbs in the blood, specifically the kerbs of the go-kart track at Interlagos in Brazil, his count-

ry of birth, where he began to race at the age of four. After an early and amazing career start in the South American Junior Championships and World Championships Kart in Europe, Ayrton landed to his first major category in 1982, in the last race of the British Formula 3 Championship season, where – in his first attempt at it – he conquered pole posi-tion, fastest lap and victory. These are the premises

for his transition to Formula 3 the following year, where Senna, at the wheel of the Ralt-Toyota car, won the world title and totalled 12 victories out of 20 races.

Ayrton Senna made his debut in Formula 1 in 1984 with the Toleman-hart team, on a car certainly not competitive but which allowed him to shine with a sensational second place in the Grand Prix of Monaco, under pouring rain. In that race Ayrton confronted the driver who, from that mo-

ment on, will be his rival, a man who was in every way the opposite of the Brazilian: Alain Prost, “the Professor”. The rivalry between the two drivers would continue uninterrupted throughout the life of Ayrton, with dramatic and tense moments but also spectacular ones.

1985 was the year of the move to Lotus, where Sen-na remained for three seasons totalling 6 victories and 16 pole positions, the first of a long series, and where he drove for the first time honda engines, first mounted on the Lotus car in 1987 and later to become the engines most loved by the Brazi-lian, who won his 3 world titles with them. The key year for Senna’s success was 1988. In that year Senna was engaged by McLaren-honda MP4/4 as teammate of Alain Prost and went on to win his first F1 world title. In that year Senna won at all levels the battle with his French rival: 8 victo-ries vs 7, 13 poles against 3. The world title arrived in Suzuka, a race that marked the history of Formula 1, perhaps the most famous of the who-le career of Ayrton, who on that occasion perfor-med an epic comeback culminating in the 28th lap and ending with the triumph of the Brazilian, crowned world champion for the first time.

An episode that shows better than others the character and earthly ad-venture of Ayrton Senna in the world of Formula 1 is his defeat in the run of the title in 1989, whe-re, because of an ambiguous and biased decision of the Federation, Senna was disqualified from the Japanese Grand Prix after an incident with his ri-val and teammate Prost. Ayrton was embittered, he was even thinking about retiring from racing, but in the end it reacted to the humiliation and inju-stice suffered (which prevented him from fighting for the title) accepting it in his own way, leading and winning, and in the next season he was ready to take his revenge, convinced as he was that in the end what really matters is being the fastest and the strongest. his philosophy proved right, since in 1990 Senna scored his second world title – Prost

in the meantime had moved to Ferrari – and was crowned champion in the Grand Prix of Japan, re-turning on that occasion the wrong suffered a year earlier and throwing Prost out in the first corner.

Ayrton Senna won his third world championship in 1991, driving the McLaren-honda MP4/6 with the new honda V12, a car that, good as it was, was beginning to feel the competition of Williams and would suffer even more for it in 1992, when Sen-na ended the season in the fourth place. Williams competition and superiority weighed even more in the 1993 world championship, when Senna raced with a McLaren powered by a Ford V8, even if in that unfortunate season too there will be legendary

races. Races like Doning-ton Park, when Senna won under the rain a lap ahead of Prost. Or like his fifth victory at the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo.

In 1994 Senna took the place of Alain Prost, who retired in 1993 after win-ning his fourth world tit-le, driving the Williams car designed by Adrian Newey, the guru of mo-dern Red Bull cars. From the outset, however, there were some problems with the cockpit, to the point that still in the third race, the fatal one in Imola, Senna was fighting with the adjustments of the steering wheel. It was a late change to the steering column before the Grand Prix to be fatal to the Brazilian, who lost con-trol of his Williams on lap

7 and ended his race and his life smashing at 300 km/h against the wall at the Tamburino turn. Sen-na was doomed: the strut hit his helmet visor and hurt him deadly on the head. Ayrton Senna died at 18.30 of that same day in the hospital of Mag-giore in Bologna, at the age of 34. This completed a legendary history made of 162 races, 41 wins, 65 pole positions and 19 fastest laps. The maniacs of the statistics calculated that Ayrton Senna led a Formula 1 race for 13,670 km. And it’s there, at the lead of a race, that his fans will remember him.

On October 30, 1988, the Grand Prix of Formula One was held at Suzuka Circuit, Japan.

It was no surprise to see the McLarens of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost on the front row of Honda’s home track, this was expected at the Japanese track where engine power can make up for a lot!The benefits of Ayrton’s hard-earned pole position evaporated when his Honda engine died. He was 14th at the second corner but Senna began to fight. By the end of the first lap he was 8th. The “Magic” pulled off an unimaginable performance and even if obstacles were thrown his way, Senna earned victory on podium, before Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen! After eight podiums in the season, Senna won the Championship.Watch the video and see what made Senna the greatest driver of his era!

As long as humans have been designing tools, they have lo-oked to nature for inspiration. These technologies inspired by the natural world are a part of our everyday lives, and

as we continue to understand more about the way it works, expect to see nature and animals to continue to further our technological capabilities. Velcro was inspired by the grappling hooks of burrs, su-personic jets have structures that work like the nostrils of peregrine falcons in a speed dive, full-body swimsuits lend athletes a smooth, streamlined shape like fish. humans have been looking at nature for answers to both complex and simple problems throughout our exi-stence. Biomimicry is the imitation of the models, systems, and ele-ments of nature, the term comes from the Greek words bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate. Mankind has learned many things from observing other species and adapting their behaviours

for our own needs. Look no further than Leonardo da Vinci who was a big proponent of learning from nature and using it as a source for inspiration. his sketchbooks were fi lled with inventions that are closely linked to designs found in the natural world. Th e Wright Bro-thers and other fl ight pioneers commonly observed birds, biologists, researchers and other science professionals have been practitioners of Biomimicry as well. By applying their immense knowledge of na-ture and its inner workings to other challenges and subjects, these people were able to make connections between human problems and natural solutions that others wouldn’t. From buildings and bridges to materials and medicine, examining the design of nature has ai-ded in the development of almost every aspect of our lives. Most of us benefi t from these inspired revelations several times a day even without realizing it. Designers, scientists and engineers continue to study the complex structures found in nature to conceive and bring to life every sort of product, as for example the motorcycle parts you can see in these pictures. Nature has solved many of today’s enginee-ring problems such as hydrophobicity, wind resistance, self-assembly, and harnessing solar energy through the evolutionary mechanics of selective advantages. Over time, evolution has led to some incredible developments, from the photosynthetic machinery in plants to the human eye. Taking a leaf out of nature’s book, scientists have develo-ped technologies that seek to mimic some of life’s unique innovations. Imagine 3.8 billion years of design brilliance available for free to any sustainability innovator in the world. Th at’s in front of us everyday. It might not catch up your attention right away, it might not immedia-tely tickle your imagination, but if you take a closer look, or better, if you just watch it from another perspective, the whole world will inspire you. And if it doesn’t, look again.

In road accidents the ones who risk more are children. The reason is simple: they are the most fragile, have a lower perception of danger and

cannot protect themselves in the event of a sudden shock, which they cannot predict, and finally they are more easily affected by the inertia throwing them against the obstacles inside and outside the cockpit of the car. That is why, when carrying children, no one should ignore the most basic safety rules.Children first. Children because when travelling, children are the main and innocent victims, inno-cent since they have not chosen to travel and are not ready for the worst, they cannot shelter themselves in case of an accident. Therefore they must be pro-tected before and better than any other person. Let’s see how.

In the years of economic and car boom the child had to enjoy the journey: the wonder of the lan-dscape, the air, and even the speed… The child was almost always tran-sported without any se-curity measures, without wearing seat belts, like adults, but often also in the best positions to en-joy the show, which were also the most dangerous ones, in the front seats or near the side window.

Today, after paying a high cost in terms of casualties, things have finally changed. Cars are safer and children do not longer need to be hurt worst than us and before us. Children have their specific place in a car and it’s to them that are dedicated the most advanced security measures available on the market. Provided you remember them and are ready to use them. The Italian and the European highway Codes are clear: whoever, driver or passenger, occupies a seat in a vehicle equipped with seat belts must wear them. In case of younger children, however, there is also the obligation (but it would be better to speak

of possibilities) to adopt appropriate restraint sy-stems, i.e. child seats and adapters.

Child seats must be used since a child’s first days of life, and evolve gradually according to the child weight. The first seats to be used are those appro-ved for the lower age group, from birth up to 18 kg. Up to 9 kg the child should be transported in the opposite direction of travel, taking care not to put your child in the front seat if the car is equip-ped with an airbag, unless it can be disabled. The most suitable place for the child seat is the rear seat, possibly in the middle, in order to protect the child also against side impact. Often even with children

weighting more than 10 kg the seat facing the op-posite direction of travel is the most secure, pro-vided that the rear seat where the child seat is mounted is not too close to the tailgate, as on the smaller city cars.

Between 18 and 36 kg, there are still safe and properly sized seats to protect the child in the event of a side impact and injury to the upper body. The alternative to the car seat solution (which is highly recom-mended), is the adapter, which is lawful but less safe since it raises the child, which is ancho-red to the car’s safety belts passing under the side f laps, keeping him in a higher and unna-tural position exposed to shocks, and since it

is also and awkward and shaky position. A further aspect must be considered: the car safety systems (airbags and seat belts) are designed and tested for people being at least 1.50 meter. Always check the real effectiveness of the seat belt in retaining the body of your baby before choosing to move from an ad hoc seat complete with four-point seat belts to an adapter. Security is not just a matter of law. It is a matter of life!

FEATURING

ADVICE FOR CARRYING CHILDREN ON TWO WHEELS

Only for children over five years of age: in Italy it is against the law to carry under 5 years on two-wheeled vehicles. Beyond the law, what matters most is the behaviour of the driving adult, who must be aware of the risk of tran-sporting children on a motorbike, a more dan-gerous vehicle than a car.

First of all use the bike seats. Among the best ones on the market there is the S650 Baby Ride by the Italian company Givi, good for children up to 8 years and with an adjustable “footrest”.Do not use the provided seat belts: in case of a fall, a baby strapped to the seat would remain bound to the seat with serious consequences.

Then wear the right helmets and clothing. Do not use helmets for adults but helmets speci-fically made for children and homologated as such, in addition to jackets, back-pads, trou-sers, boots and gloves (preferably with pad-ding).
