Ayesa has emerged as a key player on both a national and international level in the introduction of company management systems using SAP technology. The com-pany possesses more than twenty years of experience in this world-leading technology, but over the past few years it has taken several giant steps forward to enter signi-ficant contracts with companies like Enel, and governments such as in Panama and Ecuador. Currently, this business line is one of the fastest growing and most prominent in the company.

Javier Requejo, Utilities, Telco and Industry Director, says that “Ayesa has been focused on SAP for two decades now, as the biggest multinational companies use it for their company management systems. SAP offers robust solutions for all business processes and in all sectors. Ayesa has invested in development solutions for the utilities, go-vernment and industry sectors, allowing for a reduction in timescales and project costs

as well as enabling people to get the most out of their investment in IT systems”.Today, the company has over 300 highly-experienced consultants on their staff, with 150 SAP certifications between them. This team has worked with around 200 clients from nine different countries and a variety of sectors (from public entities to large corporations), which comprise a total of 15,000 end users. In Spain, over 100 SAP specialists are based at the hub for this business line, which is now located in the Seville Tower: the tallest skyscraper in Andalusia. The aim for this business line is to make use of its acquired experience in

large-scale projects to carry out even bigger cross-border projects.

Know howThe first major contract carried out by Ayesa, and which turned it into a leader in the general government sector, was GIRO (Gestión Integrada de Recursos Organizativos, or Integrated Management of Organisatio-nal Resources), which was designed for the Regional Government of Andalusia. This was an important step forward, both in qualitative and quantative terms, as the platform that was installed integrates all the operations carried out by the largest autonomous government in

Spain, with a budget of over €31 million. The Andalusian administration opted for SAP tech-nology (having previously used custom-made technology) to integrate its entire economic-financial management system. Ayesa won the public call for tender to deploy this system in 2011, in a consortium with Informática El Corte Inglés (Iecisa), with other major contracts in South America following the formation of this business relationship.

This platform now has 8,500 users and a recorded 2,000 connections per day, in addition to another 1,500 from the web, 2.5 million invoices are sent per year and 7 million accountancy documents amassed. Although deployment was completed last year, the com-pany continues to reach new heights. “We are continuing to grow, with major new projects in new areas - such as the integration of public procurement and the treasury budget - having recently been undertaken,” says Miguel Ángel Fernández, Ayesa’s Director of Services for the Andalusian Finance Department. The firm has also managed to transfer the know-how it has acquired to other autonomous government bodies, such as Castilla-La Mancha. However, although the GIRO project has been critical for Ayesa, it is their contracts with Enel which are

creating a future full of tremendous opportuni-ties in ICT consulting. This is one of the biggest SAP projects in the world, and its international scope means that Ayesa’s involvement is earning them serious recognition.

New Management System for Enel Group The Italian energy group and owner of Endesa chose Ayesa in partnership with Indra and Engineering to redesign the Corpo-rate and Operative management model used in their Distribution, Production, Renewables and Market departments. This will allow for the creation of a platform which standardi-ses IT systems and management across the group, enabling them to adopt best practices in all the countries (currently over 25) in which they operate. The end goal is for the integration and standardisation of these pro-cesses to result in saving a significant amou-nt of time in the operation of the electricity company, as well as improving productivity in dependent companies and throughout the group. Ayesa was involved in deploying the new SAP-based model in the Spanish subsi-diary, and aims to continue soon with deployment of their systems in five other South American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Colombia), as well as throug-hout the rest of Europe.

Ayesa is now certified as a SAP Part-ner Center of Expertise, allowing it to position itself as one of the techno-logy giant’s key Services and VAR (Value-Added Reseller) companies in Colombia and Ecuador. This accreditation, awarded by the German group, recognises the com-pany as a first-rate provider. To reach this standard, Ayesa has passed a rigorous audit in which it complied with the requirements set out by the producer for three key variables: a high-value technical team, support platforms, and processes. Luisa Oliveros, Channel Sales Director at SAP for the Northern Latin Ameri-can region, said that “involvement in sales generated through our SAP Co-lombia channels is highly significant. Our aim is to continue supporting our business partners’ development and specialisation”.

>> A growth of 28% was seen in projects won by the engineering and technology group in 2016, compared to the previous year.

Ayesa is reinforcing its position as one of the strongest companies in its sector. In 2016, the engineering, consultancy and innovation technological services group achieved a record figure in contracted work: a total of €463 million, with a notable increase of 28% from the previous year. An improvement was also seen in revenues, where figures reached 240.5 million. This is 3.5% more than in 2015, whilst pre-tax profit came in at 3.8 million (a 13% increase). It has been a difficult year, but we are showing

that the path we have taken to secure the company’s future is a successful one”, says President of Ayesa José Luis Manzanares. South America continues to be a key region for Ayesa, as confirmed by an increase in their project portfolio in the zone. Standing out among these are the development of

SAP in the management of public finances in Ecuador and Panama, the modernisation of Colombia’s electronic court records system

and military logistics, and system develo-pment Social Geography of the Mexican Secretariat of Social Development. 2016 also proved to be a very productive year in the engineering department, with projects inclu-ding the supervision of construction work for new airports in Mexico City and Cuzco, and the Mumbai Metro works, the company’s eighth subway project across the world. The company’s focus on R+D has enabled them to develop their own tools in fields such as big data, energy efficiency, electric mobility, educational and legal resource manage-ment and infrastructure design with BIM technology. “The developments have very much increased our value when it comes to competing with large firms across all five continents”, Manzanares explains.

Ayesa completes their largest contract in water automation and telecontrol >> The company has equipped the Taibilla Canals, which trans-port drinking water to over 2.5 million people, with intelligent systems.

Ayesa has successfully completed its largest water telecontrol project to date. After five years of activity, all works conferred upon the company by the Taibilla Canals Association have been completed for a sum of over €14 million. This organisation is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Envi-ronment, and is responsible for supplying drinking water to 79 localities in south-eastern Spain including Murcia, Cartagena, Elche and Alicante. Through this activity, the association serves a population of over 2.5 million people, which increases to over three million during the summer. To do this, its primary canal network is 498 kilometres

in length. The large surface area covered by the association has been one of the challenges faced by the Ayesa team, which has managed to successfully install measu-ring and control sensors and systems in 180 facilities and connect them via radio link on a private bandwidth, for which a high-capacity backbone network comprising 28 main nodes and an access network with almost 200 entry points has been built. Included in this total are 31 pumping stations, 112 reservoirs, 5

purification plants, the New Canal of Carta-gena and more than 40 measuring stations, including one at the Taibilla dam.

“All the hydraulic structures were already in place. We added the smart aspect”, explains project director Jaime Argüelles. The supervi-sion, automation and control systems mean the transportation and storage of water can be managed intelligently, using remote real-time water level, quality and pressure mana-gement. Consequently, Argüelles highlights that “the advanced technology deployed by Ayesa improves and facilitates operations, at the same time as reducing and optimising costs. Furthermore, it aids in decision-ma-king, as the technical solution automatically generates operations plans”. There were two stages to the project: the first focused on primary facilities, and the second on smaller, auxiliary facilities. Professionals from various backgrounds were required for the suc-cessful execution of the project: from project and technical management to electrical en-gineers, telecontrol specialists, programmers and graphic designers.

A background of extensive experienceAyesa has extensive experience in the telecontrol sector, having also recently completed the automation pro-cess of the Navarra Canal, the Piedras Canal (Huelva), and sanitation for Vigo City Hall. Previously the company has worked with businesses such as Giahsa (Huelva), Cobre Las Cruces, and the Guadalquivir River Authority.

>> Via their BPO department, Ayesa was the firm selected to provide personalised service to electricity company Endesa’s major accounts, including com-panies listed on the IBEX index and top-performing Spanish businesses.

In Vega del Rey (Seville), where the headquarters of Ayesa’s BPO department are located, there are fifty employees who attend to the needs of the largest companies in Spain, from textiles and telecommunications multinationals to food companies. These are Endesa’s VIP clients, which the company ‘looks after’ by providing exclusive personalised service. The contract,

valued at €1.5 million, started in May 2016, and after three months Endesa’s quality assessment came back as satisfactory, with company repre-sentatives expressing as much when they met with the Ayesa team who had been allocated the project.

This is the first specific front-office contract for large clients that the group has undertaken. The aim is to provide an exclusive service to com-panies who exceed over 5,000 energy supply

points. Eduardo Ruiberriz, Division Director at Enel by Ayesa, with the team there handling additions, deletions and contract modifications, as well as billing and collection. The team also prepares ad hoc consumption and billing reports. At the project’s midway point - although two one-year extensions are being considered - the business line manager reports that the transition from the previous provider has been complicated, but that the quality standards required by Endesa are being achieved. The service is currently provided to over 1,000 major accounts (which cover around 100,000 supply points) and 2,700 SMEs (with 35,000 faci-lities). Since the start of the project in July 2016, the team has taken 20,000 calls, responded to 120,000 emails and managed 30,000 contract, billing and collections requests.

A new contract in Lima consolidates leadership in Latin American subway sector>> Ayesa awarded project to expand Line 1 in partnership with TMB (Transports Metropolità de Barcelona) with a value of $6.8 million.

The company’s investment in the South American market continues to generate major contracts for them, consolidating Ayesa’s position as the leading Spanish engineering firm in the urban transport sector. The firm’s good work has earned them a new contract working on the Lima Metro, which is expected to double the capacity of Peru’s infrastructure. More specifically, Ositran has awarded Ayesa and TMB

the Comprehensive Supervision of Investment in Additional Rolling Stock and Supplementary Works for Line 1 of the Lima and Callao Electric Mass Transport System. It is valued at €6.8 million and will involve 35 months of work, mea-ning that the Group is active on projects for both lines that are currently being worked on in the capital. The project that they have won involves supervising the acquisition and testing of 20 five-coach trains and 39 additional carriages, the adaptation of new additions to the lines, remo-

delling five stations and modernising the electrical and rail signalling system. According to Javier Rodríguez, Country Manager for Ayesa Peru, “we have maintained Ayesa’s supremacy in all the major link-up facilities from the last five-year period, and are forecasting constant growth in our future”.

With regards to the expansion of the Lima Metro’s Line 1, the biggest challenge is cons-tructing the substructure and superstructure required to double the capacity of a line that will remain in use throughout the project. “We are going to need top levels of stringency and precision to efficiently achieve the high technical standards required and meet the ne-cessary deadlines for the launch of the service while working on the tracks, stations, yards and shops of a functioning metro system,” he adds. The contract also includes the supervision of

works in various fields, adding another layer of complexity. With Line 1 remaining in operation throughout the works, a challenge is also pre-sented in terms of operational security. High-capacity This circuit was used by 320,000 people in 2016, a level of demand that was not originally expec-ted until 2035. Thanks to the planned expansion work it will be able to transport up to 500,000 passengers per day, with a train every three mi-nutes instead of the current six. These updates will resolve one of the two main problems cu-rrently faced by the city of Lima, given that the volume of private traffic is growing at an expo-nential rate. Other major South American metro systems that the company has worked on inclu-de Lines 1 and 2 of the Panama Metro, Line 1 of the Quito subway system, and the Lima Metro Line 2 project. Ayesa arrived in Peru in 2010 and currently has several major projects under way there, including supervision of the Chinchero International Airport in Cusco, supervision of the South Peru Gas Pipeline Project, the EPC project for the Intipampa photovoltaic solar plant, the Master Contract for Enginee-ring Services in Block 131 with CEPSA and for Mel-chorita Plant Services with Peru LNG, as well as for Engineering and Manage-ment Services in Block 192 with Pacific Energy. International experience

Since Ayesa began its ambitious internationalisation process more than fifteen years ago, its metro engineering contract portfolio has only continued to grow. Out of the nine countries in which it has overseen projects of this type, five – Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru – are located in South America. Norway, Saudi Arabia, India, and of course Spain complete the list, with tram contracts held in Algeria, Morocco and Mauritius.

Ayesa to design Seville tram network expansion

Supervision of a pumping station in Ecuador

Ayesa will be the firm to take the reins on Seville’s long-awaited tram network expan-sion project. The Andalusian capital’s City Council have awarded them the contract for providing consultancy and technical assistance during the drafting of the Special Plan and the Standard Strategic Environ-mental Assessment on the tram platform at San Bernardo-Santa Justa (since this is not

included in the city’s General Plan), as well as the first phase of the construction project between the aforementioned San Bernado station and the Nervión district.

The project is valued at €363,000 (incl. VAT), and it has a 20-month maximum lead time. The Metrocentro is a public transport system which traverses Seville city centre. It came into operation in 2008 between the Prado de San Sebastián and Plaza Nueva. The first extension was added in 2011 out to San Bernado. It is currently two kilometres in

length, and comprises five stops. The aim is for it to operate as a shuttle service between the city centre and the main public transport services: the inner and outer city buses, su-burban trains and the Seville Metro network. It transported over four million passengers during 2016. The new service out to Nervión will add 1.2 kilometres to the Andalusian tram network, and will link San Bernardo with

the shopping malls currently located along the Avenida de Luis Morales and the Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Alongside this, the Special Plan will include an analysis of the extension to Santa Justa train station, which the current General Plan considers to be one of the city’s main inter-modal hubs. Space is reserved in this plan for the workshops and engine sheds circuit. Ayesa will also carry out archaeo-logical checks to pick up on any possible sites additional to those located out-side of the circuit.

Ecuador was one of the last South American countries to host Ayesa. Nevertheless, it has become a source of major contracts for the firm, both in engineering and technical sectors. One of the most recent contracts that the company was awarded here is the financial management and supervision of works on the La Pradera pumping station in Guayaquil and the supply line towards the future Las Esclusas Wastewater Treatment Plant. Ayesa will provide a 65% contribution to work on both facilities, including technical, economic, financial and legal supervision, in partnership with the Colombian company Proeza. The project is being carried out by the Spanish company Acciona for the Municipal Water Company of Guayaquil. It is receiving funding from the EIB and the pumping station alone has a budget of $23 million. Having started last May, the works are expected to take 18 months. José Ramón Delgado, Country Manager for Ecuador, is keen to emphasise that “from a structural point of view this project is a tricky one, as the station is located on marshland where water levels are practically at ground level. This is where we are going to have to construct panels of over 20 metres”.

TunnelAyesa won the installation of this project, ten-dered for $2.5 million, thanks to the experience shown by the company in large-scale hydraulic works throughout our fifty-year existence. The group will also oversee the provision of technical assistance for the supply line to the Las Esclusas Wastewater Treatment Plant. This line will pass through an urban area with a high population density “which complicates the construction process due to services possibly being affected”. Bidding for this project has just finished, and it is hoped that it will start towards the end of this year. According to Project Director Fernando Vi-tores, “the microtunnel from the pumping station to the treatment plant will be around 4,500 metres in length.”

>> The Andalusian capital’s City Council has awarded the company a contract to expand the network out to the Nervión shopping area, and the Special Plan out to Santa Justa train station.

1.2 kilometres will be added to the length of the Metrocentro, which was commissioned in 2008

Sevilla Metrocentro’s route.

By virtue of its multidisciplinary nature in the renewables sector (and particularly in terms of solar energy), Ayesa has positioned itself as a strategic engineering solution. Since it carried out its first project in Spain thirteen years ago, the company has participated nonstop in the construction of ‘green’ energy facilities. What is more, it has managed to export its know-how, and is currently winning contracts in Africa and South America, two of the main focal points for investment in the world today. These contracts include technical due diligence for several plants in Morocco, where the company is also technical advisor for the country’s energy agency (Masen), and it carries out the same role for the Mezquite wind farm in Mexico. Its most far-flung desti-nation to date has been the Philippines, where it carried out technical due diligence for two solar farms. Within the solar energy sector, Ayesa has also installed numerous solar ther-mal facilities. “In Spain, we have participated

in all phases of plants using parabolic trough technology. These are extremely capital-intensive plants which need to be built to tight deadlines, meaning that significant enginee-ring knowledge is required. Companies such as ourselves which are equipped to handle projects like these are few and far between, as skills are required in mechanical, electrical,

and even chemical engineering,” says José Antonio García Bermudo, Head of Energy, Mining and Industrial Systems. Consequently, Ayesa has participated in the construction of around half of the 50 solar thermal plants

that are currently ‘hooked up’ to the network in Spain, providing everything from basic to in-depth engineering services, to supervision and technical and engineering support across the property. The latest contract to be won in this sector was in South Africa. The plant is called Ilanga, and will have an installed capacity of 100 megawatts - twice the power of Spanish plants. Ayesa has a competitive advantage over other firms in the sector due to its multidisciplinary nature, its internatio-nal presence – with 15 subsidiaries located abroad – and the proven experience it has acquired throughout its 50 years of life, not to mention “the size of the company, its human capital and financial strength”, as highlighted by García Bermudo.

Taking the plunge with ‘turnkey’ contracts A new area of activity for Ayesa is ‘turnkey’ renewable energy projects (or EPC), a field in which it started work through E&A, the subsidiary which was recently created in partnership with the Seville firm Elmya. The first photovoltaic facility that they will undertake together is Intipampa, in the Peruvian region of Moquegua. The plant will have a capacity of 40 megawatts, and is sponsored by the French energy group Engie (formerly GDF Suez), which won the project by public auction having offered the most competitive energy produc-tion costs. It is hoped that the new plant will be commissioned in 2018, following an estimated investment of $55 million. E&A will oversee the entire project, except for the supply of modu-les and the investment and structural aspect. The company commenced work at the start of the year, and the targeted lead time is ten months. Francisco Espinar, E&A Managing Di-rector, highlights that numerous bids are being offered in South America; four 10-megawatt facilities have been put to tender for example, with each requested as a ‘turnkey’ project. Division Director

José A. García Bermudo

Ayesa taking part in one hundred megawatt Ilanga solar thermal project in South Africa

>> With the creation of the Elmya-affiliated E&A subsidiary, yet another step is taken towards addressing the complete life-cycle of energy plants through EPC contracts.

Thirteen years under the sunLarge-scale projects

The aim of Ayesa’s Energy, Mining and Industrial Systems Division is to posi-tion itself “on large-scale projects, or contracts of over €1 million in enginee-ring, which require a total investment exceeding €50 million”, says division head José Antonio García Bermudo.

On the 29th June, Ayesa brought together around 200 relevant managers from all the business areas and countries in which it operates in order to assess the company’s development over the first half of the year. During the meeting, Vice President José Luis Manzanares Abásolo said that the company “is more prepared than ever to compete in a globalised and sophisticated world”. He added that Ayesa had experienced “its finest moment”, having established a presence in 16 countries and positioned itself on some of the leading projects worldwide through its size and innovative capabilities. These projects include the Intipampa pho-tovoltaic plant, the implementation of Enel’s management system in America and the Airbus digital factory, which were all examples shared by their respective directors. In terms of growth over the first five months of the year, Manzanares informed those pre-sent that production had increased by 28%. What is more, the technological, engineering and consulting services group noted a new contracting record of almost €100 million to

May 2017, up 25% on the same period last year. The Vice President highlighted the exce-llent management work of country managers and financial directors on an international level, as well as praising their teams, who are facing the challenges presented in each country head-on. He also noted Panama and India as current growth drivers. Despite the Spanish economy improving, he indicated that investment in infras-tructure here continues to fall, however, progress is being made in the private IT sector and “the arrival of federal funds seem to have made several regional authorities more active, which means we can be optimistic”.

Finally, he went on to talk about the workforce as a cornerstone of the company’s future. “Our challenge is to be able to understand that the secret to success lies in our employees, and our commitment. In order to compete with the big companies, we have to fly the flag higher than they do”. Revitalising Ayesa The President of Ayesa, José Luis Manzanares Japón, pointed out the keys to “revitalising” the company, and facing up to a world which “is changing at a dizzying rate”. One of the keys he mentioned was the urgent need to “inject bureaucracy

with an iron-clad discipline, an awareness of economical behaviour, and the mindset of a traveller, because the world is out there waiting for us”.

Ayesa has become one of the key players in the global rail industry. Whilst the company undertakes extensive activities in other countries such as Panama, Peru, Ecuador and Saudi Arabia, its large project portfolio in India makes this one of the most promising cou-ntries for Ayesa in terms of potential under the direction of its Country Manager, Mariano Álvarez. As noted in the previous issue of Ingenio only a few months ago, two major contracts have been signed to provide design consultancy for the public service features, architecture and cons-truction of the corridor between Adheri (East) and Dahisar (East), as well as general engi-neering consultancy services for the Line 7 corridor (Andheri East - Dahisar East) and the Line 2B corridor (DN Nagar - Mandale) of the Mumbai Metro. These activities come in the wake of many others which were already under way, with the branch having consequently seen their human team grow spectacularly over the past year to a workforce of nearly 300 employees. With India having therefore

become Ayesa’s largest branch outside of Spain, the corporate services department sent colleagues out there to support this growth and contribute to the implementation of and compliance with the various working procedu-res and systems. Following the launch of the SAP financial model there, Javier Monclova from IT and José Nogales from Admin went out to help and support the branch carry out their first monthly economic closure for the month of May. The Director of Engineering Human Resources, Domingo Ortega, has

focused his work on helping the India team use corporate tools in the various proces-ses related to department-specific tasks. The Corporate Communications Manager, Marta Beteta, also went out to gain first-hand knowledge of Ayesa India’s future facilities, and to share information and procedures with various managers that will help us to maintain the Ayesa brand in this country. There was also the opportunity during the trip to see Spanish expats and employees who are now living out there.

Aeronautics representatives from Ayesa travelled to Le Bourget (Paris) to attend the sector’s biggest international trade fair, which took place between the 23rd and 25th June. There were 2,370 exhibitors at this 52nd edition, which provided Ayesa Air Control (AAC) with an opportunity to meet with large European engineering

companies in order to establish a strategy for collaboration for future Airbus provider selection processes. It was also an opportunity to make contact with potential new clients. The company delivered a variety of Repsol products - guides, umbrellas and aprons - to 400 employees in a show of thanks for their contributions to questions which were incorporated into a cognitive technology project which Ayesa is undertaking for the Spanish energy group.

They helped to compile a large group of questions, which was used to train a system which will be provided to users of the new digital version of the Repsol Guide in the future. Image shows three Group employees receiving thank-you gifts for their contributions.

Having been invited by Autodesk to attend the BIMagination conference, Director of Technology and Processes in the Civil Engineering and Architecture department Fidel San Emeterio gave a speech on ‘Ayesa’s Outlook on the Infrastructure Market and BIM Environment’. The event took place in the Melia Castilla hotel in

Madrid on the 15th June, with 60 professionals from the infrastructure sector in attendance. Also invited were companies Ferrovial and LSK. Thanks to their use of this technology, Ayesa has won significant contracts such as the Amador Convention centre in Panama and the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia.

Eight hundred representatives from 300 companies in the Spanish SAP user group (AUSAPE) met in the Fibes Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville for the thirteenth edition of their Forum. This was the first time that the event has taken place in Seville, as Zaragoza has always been chosen as the location in the past.

Innovation, artificial intelligence and the use of cognitive technology in companies’ evolution towards digital models were just some of the hot topics covered during the event, which took place on the 21st and 22nd June. Anabel Polo from Consulting, who attended as an Ayesa representative, is pictured.

Ayesa wants to create a South American high-level technology knowledge hub in El Salvador which provides services to the rest of the region. For this, the company has signed a collaboration agreement with the university to complete the study programme of future Salvadoran engineers with specialist training in high-

level technology. After having signed the agreement with Father Andreu Oliva, the chancellor of UCA El Salvador, Executive Vice President of Ayesa, Arancha Manzanares said that it represents “a clear commitment by the company to the technological future of El Salvador”.

Ayesa was one of the companies sponsoring the SAP Executive Summit Day, which took place in Bogotá on the 16th March. This is one of the South American technology industry’s most iconic events. On this occasion, the focus of the meeting was on how to take advantage of new and emerging technology, such as the

Internet of Things, blockchains and machine learning. Ayesa was represented by the Head of Consulting for South America, Isidro Fornos, and the Head of Consulting for Colombia, Luis María Ruiz del Portal, who presented several of the company’s SAP implementation success stories to the audience.

Work on the second of Seville’s ring roads – the SE-40 – is progressing well. The next sections to enter service will be the Coria del Río-Almensilla and Almensilla-Espartinas sections. After that, the stretch between the towns of Alcalá de Guadaíra and Dos Hermanas will open in March 2018.

The Spanish Minister for Infrastructures, Íñigo de la Serna, visited the works at the Seville turnoff. He was accompanied by the companies overseeing the project’s infrastructure with Francisco Javier García Martín, Deputy Operation Director of Civil Engineering and Architecture, attending on behalf of Ayesa.

On the 17th February, the JDA Forum 2017 – one of the biggest international events in the desalination industry – took place in Tokyo, organised by the Japan Desalination Association (JDA). Ayesa was one of the companies invited to the event to present their experience of this type of project and their vision for the future.

The International Vice President, Nagi Chehab, and the Head of the Desalination Department, Carlos Martín Freixá, sat on the panel. The fact that Ayesa was invited by Japan, a world leader in this field, is yet another example of how the Company has caught the attention of international organizations.

The secondary school ‘Alixar’, situated in the town of Castilleja de la Cuesta (Seville), has awarded Ayesa a plaque in recognition of their contribution to FP Dual in Andalusia. The company has been at the forefront of bringing Microcomputer Systems and Networks students into this original new format, which combines

vocational training with internships for the two-year course. The first class, composed of thirteen students, completed their studies this year. Corporate Managing Director, Germán del Real Urbano, accepted the plaque, handed by some of the teachers and FP Dual managers at the Sevillian school.

New generation of outstanding engineers

Ayesa is now the second biggest private employer in Andalusia, and its widespread international presence makes it an even more attractive prospect for the most highly-qualified ‘millennials’ throughout Spain. And, according to Rafael Aguilar, Head of Selection at Ayesa, new genera-tions of professionals are indeed looking for exciting experiences outside of Spain and wanting to work on large-scale projects. The Talent campaign has been run every year since 2011 at the Universities of Grana-da and Seville, the Technological Campus of the University of Navarra (TECNUN), Comillas

Pontifical University, Carlos III University of Madrid and the Technical Universities of Ma-drid and Catalonia. The aim is to recruit the best students from the Industrial and Civil Engineering courses, who are then made an attractive offer. “The idea is that they receive all the neces-sary training to become project managers in the future. They will work on various projects with different departments so that they learn more quickly, and they will also have a

mentor and a tutor for guidance throughout their time here,” explains Aguilar. Ayesa receives around 250 CVs each year from young people who have just finished

their degrees and who are looking to secure a job with a good company. The company selects around a dozen of these applicants

to enrol in the Talent Programme. Julio Ro-dríguez is one of the people behind this plan to attract and retain outstanding employees. “I was one of the top three graduates from the Civil Engineering course in Granada, and graduated with Honours. Ayesa called me to enrol me in November 2013, after finishing my Master’s. I started in Seville and then I moved to the Madrid offices, to the Landsca-pe Engineering Department, with Guillermo Martínez as my tutor”.

The engineer stresses that “the most valua-ble thing about the Talent Programme is that it shows the company placing faith in young people, who are given a voice right from the start and who offer a fresh view of things. Because, as we say in engineering, the latest thing is never the last”. The company is looking for engineers who are a good match for the organisation, with good qualifications, language skills, and the potential for working internationally. The required skills include a good client focus, the ability to work in a team, reliabi-lity and honesty, a commitment to service, innovation, flexibility and the ability to adapt to change.

Record recruitment year Ayesa closed 2016 with 4,065 employees, an 11% increase on the 3,657 of 2015. Of the

total workforce, around 3,000 are in Spain and 2,400 in Seville, where the company’s central offices are located. It carries out five hundred selec-tion processes each year (not including BPO).

The company is joined by an average of 40 workers every month

>> The company is launching their seventh employment announcement to recent graduates in Industrial and Civil Engineering. Each year the Talent Programme receives over 250 CVs from candidates.

Ayesa Foundation

The Ayesa Foundation has created an un-missable event for the disabilities sector in Andalusia with the Emprendis Awards. For the second year running, the orga-nisation awarded €50,000 to ten social entities from Andalusia which support the inclusion of people with disabilities in professional workforces. This year the awards went to Aspro-velez, Upace San Fernando, the Seville Association for Asperger’s and Down Syndrome, Anidi, Taller de la Amistad, A

Toda Velocidad, Aprona, the Andalusian Autism Federation and the TAS Foun-dation. In addition to this, President of the Ayesa Foundation Ana Manzanares, also awarded an individual prize for a career in social integration to Francisco Herrera del Pueyo from Proyecto Hombre Sevilla, for working to help people with addictions for over 25 years. Manzanares highlighted the importance of the work carried out by these organisations to sup-port these groups within our community,

and emphasised that the award-winning projects from the first event had enabled “93 people with disabilities to enter the workplace, with another 355 people experiencing improved conditions, both personally and professionally”. In addition to Emprendis, the foundation supports people with disabilities with social technology applications and by awarding bursaries and grants. “We want to create a fairer world”, con-cluded Manzanares.

Annual disabilities event

As part of the #estudioSTEM (‘STEM study’) programme, which hopes to spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), the Ayesa Foundation has developed the Sandbox project. This system uses augmented reality to simulate topographic maps by projecting images onto a raised surface of white sand, with the changing altitudes of the maps contoured into the sand. It can also be made to rain across the area, and flows of water can be simulated according to the inclination of the surface. Other functions such as draining and total flooding are also available.

“The closure of the Guadalquivir river was what awakened the awareness of our poverty and ended up being a symbol of a new spring”>> The President of Ayesa, José Luis Manzanares, says that knowledge is what changes society as he pre-sents the Spring Review (‘Revista de Primavera’) and introduction to Seville’s Semana Santa Easter celebrations organised by the radio station Cadena Ser.

This year the broadcaster chose the group’s founder to be featured in an ‘A Tribute to Spring’ (‘Elogio a la Primavera’) report, a role that has previously been filled by public figures such as journalist Iñaki Gabilondo and weather reporter José Antonio Maldonado. Reminiscing about his childhood, he talked about the especially hard post-war winters in Seville, and how the arrival of spring always meant the end for the cold and the flooding in his birthplace of Triana. “All of a sudden we would go from being poor to being rich. There were probably many places in the world where the standard of living was better than ours, but no one experienced the same miracles as we did in the springtime”. In the same vein, the Ayesa President added that during Semana Santa, “a poor community, who at times had hardly anything to eat, dedicated everything they didn’t have to celebrating and honouring God and the Mother of God”. But Manzanares “always felt that, as every new springtime arrived in Seville, it would not finish in June but would continue throughout the year”. He also says he became fanatical about progress was after his father took him to see the Tapón de Chapina – a diversion dam which stopped the city flooding – in 1950. However, “When the Guadalquivir river closed, and all its laden donkeys were no more, it stopped being a symbol of a new spring and made us aware of our poverty”. For Ayesa’s president, knowled-ge is the key to what has turned modern-day society around. “Major societal changes have been achieved with very little. The miracle comes from the elite of working society and our intelligence”.

Now that we have a new Seville which can deal with what April brings throughout the rest of the year, now, he stated, is the time to continue making progress. “We need to create jobs,

stop being afraid of working abroad, develop ourselves a fiscal framework that is attractive to investors and above all, we need to realise that the target is never reached”.

Ayesians around the world

Antonio CalsinaConsultancy Manager in Ecuador

Antonio (Sevilla, 1964) decided to take a big step forward with his career by moving to Ecuador. It is here, a country where Ayesa has been operating since 2013, that he is starting his international adventure. He will take his extensive knowledge and experience

of the company with him out to some of the most major consulting projects currently under way.

What made you move abroad?I got asked if I wanted to go, and after ten years in comfortable roles within Ayesa, I thought I should say yes. I have watched colleagues move abroad and spend seve-ral years in America. Now it’s my turn.

What do you hope that this new des-tination will bring you, both persona-lly and professionally?I think that this is a good opportunity to do something different to what I am used to. I have never lived abroad and, family aside, I am looking forward to it. I’m feeling a mixture of giddiness, hope and responsibility. It is going to give me the opportunity to work with colleagues who I would otherwise hardly ever have spoken to. Getting to know a new place is interes-ting too; Ayesa is much more than just its office in Seville.

Have you ever been to Ecuador? Or South America? I’ve never been to Ecuador – I have only worked in Mexico and Panama in South America, and for fairly short periods of time at that: never more than six weeks at a time. In Mexico I worked on the Aque-duct II project, and in Panama we were assessing a business opportunity that didn’t come to anything in the end.

What project are you going to work on?To start with I am going to work on all the ACO projects in Ecuador, although I will be focusing mainly on the Finance Ministry project, which is the most important project that we currently have under way there.

What has been your journey with Ayesa?I arrived at ACT in 2006, where I took over the Navarra Canal Telecontrol project. Since then I have worked on many different projects in the Water sector. I have been Head of Water and Environment, but most recently I was Smart Operations Manager.

Manuel Domínguez Specialist GIS Technician

With a degree from the Higher Technical School of Architecture in Seville, Manuel (Seville, 1979) is currently the Technician for Planning and Cost Control in Panama, where he has been stationed for little over a month.

How has your career progressed at Ayesa? My first project was the New Heineken Fac-tory in Seville, which is where some of my

best memories and friends are from. Many of them are still with me today in Panama. Then I worked on the Zaragoza International Expo Project, which was hard for me on a personal level because it was the first time that I had had to leave Seville. However, it didn’t take long for me to realise how many advantages there were to that experience. I also worked on the Pelli Tower, but that wasn’t really what I was expecting it to be. And that was when the opportunity presen-ted itself to take the plunge and go to a new country, to a major project like the South Peru Gas Pipeline. I am currently working on the Amador Convention centre in Panama and the Superior Technical Institute (ITSE).

How did your arrival in a new country go? My arrival in Panama went very well, and I got an amazing welcome since many of my colleagues here are good friends of mine from previous projects. Moving is hard - even more so with two babies and a house completely packed up into suitcases. But I did the difficult bit during my first posting, and bringing my wife and sons across on this trip has been, and continues to be, so important. My arrival here has

been really beneficial on a professional level, since I have got back into my sector: construction and building work.

What is the most valuable part of your experience in these countries? Over here I have felt valued and respected, although you have to change how you think and adapt to your surroundings. Working outside of your home country opens your mind, and getting to know professionals with different nationalities is a completely new experience which you need to soak up to be able to develop new skills.

What is the biggest thing you have got out of being in Panama? What interests me the most is getting to know all its beaches and inland areas. There are a lot of contrasts in this city, as with so many places in South America, and you can see a huge social divide here. In terms of food and drink, coming from Spain and Peru, this country doesn’t even compare: you just have to look at the sheer variety of fruit here. One of my favourite areas is the old town, possibly because it reminds me of Cádiz back home.

Voluntary work in Panama

The Panama Metro Line 2 Con-sortium, which Ayesa is a part of, celebrated Recycling Day on the 20th May by building a children’s play area inside the Camino de Cruces National Park, a protected area located opposite the project’s Prefabrication Plant. Various materials were donated by the companies that are involved in building the subway, and Yajaira Enith Serrano, Jaime Blanco, Daniel García and Francisco Gomez were the volunteers, along with their families.

We have many sports enthusiasts here at Ayesa, which means we often receive superb images such as the one shown here: the Ayesa India cricket team geared up for one of its regular Saturday matches in all its official kit. Cricket is the most popular sport in India and naturally we also have our own amateur teams here at Ayesa. Following on from this, we would love for you to send us more pictures of you playing your favourite sports.
