PROBLEM DEFINITIONHealthcare facilities cater to a constant flowof patients and visitors who are often unfa-miliar with their surroundings. Finding your way around a large, complex hospital can bea frustratingexperience,evenwith traditionalwayfindingsignage,since theycanbeconfus-inganddifficulttodecipher.Patientswhoneedtoget toanappointmentquicklyat timesgetlostwhiletryingtofindtherightplace.Ahighnumberofdelayscanbeacostlyfactorforhos-pitals.
SOLUTIONAnindoornavigationanddigitalsignagesolu-tion helps visitors, patients and staff to gaineasier access to the entire healthcare facility.In combination with amobile app, Bluetoothbeaconsaroundthehospitalhelppinpointthelocation of each user, guiding them to theirselected destination, rerouting them if theytakeawrongturn.Intheentranceareaofthehospital, patients and visitors are greeted by a touch-screenkioskthatprovidesafloorplanof
thebuildingandgivesanoverviewofallhos-pitaldepartments.Itcanalsoshowthecafete-riamenu,upcomingevents, infotainmentandhealthcarenews.Moreover,thesolutionoffersthepossibilitytosearchforadestinationusingkeywords. When selecting the desired desti-nation, the terminal presents a possible route fromthecurrentposition.UsingaQRcode,theroute can be transferred to the user’s smart-phone to receive turn-by-turn directions viaapp.
Priortoappointments,an individualcodecanbe sent topatientswhich canbeused in theappor the touch-screen kiosk in order to re-trieveappointmentnotifications,viewtheloca-tionoftheexamroomandbeabletonavigatethere. The users are notified of any appoint-ment changes and can adjust their plans ac-cordingly.
Anadditionaloptionforthewayfindingappistheintegrationofanemployeelogin,enablingtosuggestshorterroutesfornavigation,includ-ingareasthatareaccessrestrictedforpatients.
TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATIONBluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons are in-stalled throughout the entire area. For nav-igation purposes, a mobile device receivesBluetooth signals from thebeaconsandusesthe signal strengthmeasurement for localiza-tion. This requires an app. A back channel isused for sending geo- and time-based pushnotifications to the user’s smartphone. Thesecan includeappointmentreminders,welcomemessages when entering the building, and in-formationonappointmentchanges.Usingtheapp, users can follow turn-by-turn directions
