The FMA Informative while visiting the Philippines of course ventured to Legaspi and visited Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag of the Magdaraog Martial Arts System. It was fortunate that the FMA Informative was able to meet some of the students. It is not too often that you find female practitioners training in Aikido, though there are a few. The FMA Informative got to speak with Rosemarie del Rosario Aquino which has trained with Grandmaster Magdaroag for a little over a year and Marife N. Millena who has trained with Grandmaster Magdaroag a bit longer than Rosemarie. Both Rosemarie and Marife gave a little insight on how it is to train in the Magdaraog Martial Arts Sys-tem, and also demonstrated some of the things that they had learned so far in the art. Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag fully admits that the art of Aikido that his family teaches is not the stan-dard Aikido, though that is the very roots, but the art of Aikido that he teaches has been constantly updated with techniques that are modern and deals with the situations of today.

The Magdaraog Martial Arts System The Magdaraog Martial Arts System is a principle of martial discipline that only a few have survived the brutal training and only some can have the privilege to be trained one-on-one in the Zeta theory and principles that the late Reynaldo A. It is a martial discipline that has been around for many years; a martial art that has survived many trials, and this is not only concerned with the physical, mental and spiritual unity of each practitioners. The training is different, in that they train in a place that is available and the environmental matter whether rain or shines. Each of our practitioners will be trained for years; if they can survive the training which it must be a training of dedication, determination, and so on…

Preservation of the Magdaraog Martial Arts System

Magdaraog Martial Arts System

Magdaraog Martial Arts System is a unique system that has been kept very secretly by Grand-master Roy B. Magdaroag father the use of the Aikido/Aikijutsu principles and incorporated the Filipino arts of Arnis, Eskrima and Kali or the Stick and Knife weap-ons. The Magdaraog Martial Arts System is a principle of mar-tial discipline that only a few have survived the brutal training and only some can have the privilege to be trained one-on-one in the

Zeta theory and principles that the late Founder Reynaldo A. Mag-daraog developed. And as the son “Grandmaster Roy B Magdraog” has constantly worked to improve the zeta that his father trained him in, with the true meaning of the theory and principles of it. The Al-pha-Omega and Alpha techniques have been added and improved upon with more powerful tech-niques. The training is different, they train in a place that is avail-able and the environmental does

not matter whether rain or shines. Each of the practitioners will be trained for years; if they can sur-vive the training which it must be a training of dedication, determina-tion, and so on…

Grandmaster Roy Mag-daroag started his training with his father at the age of 6 years old. The training was very hard and brutal labored with sweat, blood and tears. Training hours were not chosen. It was early morning and night, rain or shine. Roy started in weapons training in the art of Ai-

kido, 1st weapon he trained with was a katana followed by bokken, jo and bo, Arnis and knife, though some were taught in his later years in life. Roy was trained and treated as a student not as a son, which was very hard for him. His father had great expectations of him. Un-til this day Grandmaster Magdaro-ag still trains, teaches and revises in the improvement in the art as he has done since he started his path to knowledge and understanding of Magdaroag martial art. Grandmaster Roy Mag-daroag has said that the hardest training was when he was in high school. He trained rain or shine with my father. From the exer-cises, break falls, roll and the arts to the detailed movements as my father was a tickler to details. In those days, Aikido came first before his studies. His train-ing was very secretly done in the family’s home in the garage that not even one of the Masters of his father knew about it, (that he had been trained secretly). One day he asked his father why he was not

included in some of the exhibitions and demonstration his father said to him, “That it’s not the time for that… Soon you will be one of them.” Saturdays and Sundays Grandmaster Magdaroag trained and taught at the same time. And when he was in college he trained also every day from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. early morning and taught on Saturday and Sunday. Grandmaster Magdaroag is 5’2 in height and around 125lbs in weight. Until this date he still trains, teaches and revises in the improvement in the Magdaroag martial art as he has done since he has started. His knowledge and un-derstanding of the art and he fully admits that the art of Aikido that his family teaches is not the stan-dard Aikido, though that is its very roots, but the art of Aikido that he teaches has been constantly updat-ed with techniques that are modern and deals with the situations of today. But when my father died now I understand why he has

The Founder Reynaldo Ayo Magdaraog teachings have been preserved but only those that need to be taught. Others that were taught to Grandmaster Roy Mag-daroag were kept secret. However, now, Grandmaster Magdaroag has showed them to his students the true arts that is from the Mag-daraog Martial Arts System. The Magdaraog Zen Aikido Jutsu, now the Philippine Armas Society (Ar-mas Y Mano Magdaraog System) the arts of the Armas Y Mano, which is the Arnis, knife, and the combination of this weapons, from using to disarming. Grandmaster Magdaroag has shown them the true arts in its very advance and secret teaching that have been hidden by his father, now that he has opened the doors for this new breed of students that have passed the traditions and they are bonded for a purpose of this arts. Grandmaster Magdaroag also made personal improvements which his father and he started but was not polished till several years ago - the Zeta, and x and y. Grandmaster Magdaroag believes the traditional ways of Aikido have been changed from his point of view. He also believes the true teachings have been lost now-

a-days. It has become too much commercialized. He has been with many Aikido practitioners in the Philippines, they have said his Aikido is soft or hard. As he was taught and has been practicing it for many years Aikido is soft but hard, hard but soft for it is like water so powerful if one is though the true essence and meaning of the training. And he believes and feels sorry to those who have been deceived. Grandmaster Magdaroag has been banned in some Aikido gyms in Manila. Coz’ he has used the teachings of his father. And they only respect the one that has been promoted by the Japanese or licensed Philippine instructors. But the essence here in Bicol the name Magdaraog Martial Arts from the late Master Reynaldo A. Magdaraog the Aikido is still. In the Magdaraog Martial Arts System, we don’t stick to the book. In fact Grandmaster Mag-daroag encourages his senior students to look for loopholes and to try countering the standard arts so they can study and formulate some revisions to the existing ones. That’s how Mag-daraog Martial Arts

continues to evolve. The Magdaraog Martial Arts System is a martial discipline that has been around for many years a martial art that has sur-vived many trials, and this is not only concerned with the physical, mental and spiritual unity of each practitioners.

Training From Father to Son

trained like that… it was in prepa-ration for me to carry the torch and continue what he had meticulously

started. Grandmaster Magdaroag stated: “To my father thank you

for the knowledge and teaching… “There must be only one.”

The FMA Informative talked with two of the female students of Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag, Rosemarie del Rosario Aquino which has trained under Grandmaster Magdaroag for a little over a year and Marife N. Mon-tag who has trained under Grandmaster Magdaroag a bit longer than Rosemarie.

Students Rosemarie del Rosario Aquino and Marife N. Millena

Both practitioners said since training in the Magdaraog Martial Arts System they have learned the basic concepts, exercis-es, proper body alignment and pos-ture. Marife having been training a bit longer has also commenced learning the actual art which has been Katae Tori Kotegaechi and Katae Tori Ekyu which involves

holding and releasing. Both state that it is import-ant to learn the foundation which is the stances, for it provides bal-ance and coordination. Rosemarie is still perfecting the basic exercis-es of the art. The exercises are very important in the art, (not talking about sit ups and push-ups), they

are the basic foundation of the art. They define the basic stances, movements and shifting of the body position, also for the rolling and falls, and the basic movements of Aikido. Stretching of the mus-cles which are developed through the exercises is also important for flexibility.

Marife being a more advance student stated that even though holding and releasing are part of the art, it is easily adaptable to reality situations outside the training facility. What makes it adaptable is for example some holds you the technique or movement is in a flowing circular way, which is smooth and continuous, using the opponents force against them.

Final Comment

Both Rosemarie and Mar-ife are being taught as equals to the men of the class. Aikido being a defensive art size and weight should not matter. It is the impor-tance of the foundation and the movement of the technique being used. A practitioner must not be fearful of the opponents’ size or weight, for it is the body mechan-ics that must be modified if need-ed. Rosemarie and Marife feel

that the benefit in learning Mag-daraog Martial Arts is of course the physical fitness, they both feel that because of their size and they are women they felt it was more benefiting than Karate or Judo. Both feel that in learning and training in this art they will be able to use it in their daily life, not just for self-defense but all areas of their daily life. A couple things that Rosemarie and Marife have said

is that Grandmaster Magdaroag fully believes and has told them that nothing is impossible if the desire and patience of repetition is applied. As one earns the art the desire for more is a thirst which cannot be quenched. Both agree that at first the art seems difficult, but once the desire enter into the equation the heart over sides the difficulties.
