Teaching is closely linked with the research programme, cultivating a new set of shared concerns and values that are becoming the foundations of a new academicdiscipline “In its simplest form, the school of architecture can be thought of as developing a
portfolio of spatial/material approaches that are native to 21st century challenges” (Rolf Hughes) Glocal themes, societal themes, … Unprecedented shifts within society Students become innovators across all areas of (applied) practice Care and concerns Creating room for a next wave of architectural concerns

Architectural research driven education is all about “making judgements” dealing with complexity and multiplicity, cunning of uncertainty, being critical (taking critical distance from the own work, instrumental
criticality), positioning yourself, decision making.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
Part time Professor (50%) in professional (Interior)architecture with an active design practice –focus: ‘inventive craft(wo)manship’ / ‘inventief vakmanschap’
https://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/jobs/55580268?hl=en&lang=en
25 VACANCY 1 – 2020-028
Inventive craft(wo)manship refers here to the importance of the 'art and skill of making' in achieving inventive spatial constructions (buildings, architectural elements, interiors, objects, spatial interventions...). This is a form of architectural design that is situated close to the skin of both the building and the occupant/user. A great attention and passion for materiality steers the design here. Inventive craft(wo)manship embraces the non-sterile stubbornness of matter and the contaminations and disturbances that influence the creative process in the living environment in which a design materialises into form and becomes meaningful throughout the creative process.
Faculty of Architecture - Department of Architecture
Part time professor (50%) of professional practice in architecture/interior architecture and/or urban design with an active design practice: programmatic experimentation and critical project definition/ programmatorisch experiment en kritische projectdefinitie’
https://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/jobs/55580270?hl=en&lang=en The designer builds a practice of meaningful projects with a socio-spatial surplus on the basis of an
unusual interpretation of the programmatic question and consistent programmatic experimentation. In each design the candidate knows how to give an inventive answer to the programme inherent in the assignment itself and approaches the programme of architecture across all projects as a critical exploration of the public role and foundations of architecture. The candidate has the capacity to make this practice, and the insights it generates, operational and transferable in a (studio) educational environment and in a research context. In its design and production, the candidate's practice shows an inquisitive, questioning attitude of both the profession (the 'conducting of practice') and the discipline (the 'forming of theories').
26 Faculty of Architecture - Department of ArchitectureVACANCY 2 – 2020-029
We are looking for a candidate who, as a designer, is part of an established, active architectural practice.
You hold a master's degree in architecture, interior architecture or urban planning, or an equivalent degree, and a practice-based and/or design-driven PhD.
If you do not yet hold a doctoral degree, you will be appointed as a guest lecturer (50%) until you obtain your doctoral degree at the Faculty of Architecture, with a maximum term of five years. Your appointment to the independent academic staff will only take effect upon obtaining the PhD, under the conditions laid down by the Advisory Committee of the Faculty of Architecture.
You are part of an established, active professional design practice where there is a demonstrable basis for (if applicable, doctoral) research or you can demonstrate that your practice is in full (re)development after a (recently obtained) doctoral degree.
Proficiency in English is required. The official language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.

A limited number of candidates (shortlist) will be invited for an INTERVIEW by the fBeCo
If you are invited for the interview, you will be expected to present your vision on the academic design office (including research and education) in a brief but coherent and engaging presentation to the fBeCo, and answer questions. Also you will be asked to give a short lecture on a given topic linked to the vacancy description.
31 Faculty of Architecture - Department of Architecture
How to engage the fBeCo members during the INTERVIEW? Some obvious pointers…
Show them that you know the KU Leuven, its Department of Architecture and the Faculty of Architecture.
Show them what you can bring as an educator. You approach education as a designer for both learning content and learning environment and show yourself to bea future-oriented pedagogue.
Show them that you know what research is. Creating and realising qualityarchitecture is an important achievement, but it does not automatically translate intoresearch. what will your research be about, based on / supported by / linked withyour past professional experience?
See also the next parts of this presentation.
If you have a PhD, your research plan must include viable planning for the next five years, including funding opportunities you would develop here
If you do not yet have a PhD (see also later), your research plan must include viable planning for doctoral research, to be concluded within five years

40 What is an Academic Design Office?
Briefly, the ADO:
is a context where research, practice and education come together consists of multidisciplinary teams where researchers, artists, practitioners etc. meet in a
pedagogical environment where students participate in practice or design based research projects.
is a playground to create new formats and possibilities for research output in Architecture is a project that can introduce and engage extra stakeholders (reason can vary: contentwise,
delivering services or for extra funding)
