Individual Music Tuition £18.50 per lesson, invoiced termly in arrears.

A full term’s notice in writing to the Bursar and Clerk to the Governors or to the Headmistress is required before a pupil is withdrawn from any part of the school.

Fees are inclusive and cover the cost of school lunches, text books and entrance fees for GCSE and Advanced Level Examinations.

Tuition fees are reviewed annually to take effect from the Autumn Term each year. Details of any increase in fees are advised to parents in May of each year.

Note: Application for fee assistance has to be made well in advance of the Entrance Examination.

Foundation Award SchemeFoundation Awards are bursaries which enable children to attend one of the schools of Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, even though this would normally be beyond the reach of the parents’ financial situation*. This widens the range of educational opportunity for both pupils and parents. Who is eligible for a Foundation Award?

Foundation Awards are available for pupils entering Year 3 in the Junior Schools (7 years +), pupils entering Year 7 in the Senior Schools and also Year 12 in the Sixth Form, subject to performance in the Entrance Examination. Requests for bursaries in other year groups should be made to the Bursar and Clerk to the Governors. It should be understood that a Junior School Foundation Award is not automatically extended to the Senior School. Senior School Foundation Awards are automatically extended to the Sixth Form.

What assistance is available?

The Governors will consider providing a Foundation Award where the net parental income is less than £40,000 per annum.

Note: This income will take account of any investments, assets or equity in property.

A number of bursaries and scholarships are available for girls in the Senior School. Entrance ScholarshipsAt the age of 11, based on performance in the entrance examination, interview and school report, a small number of scholarships are awarded. It is the Governors’ policy to award scholarships to the value of a fixed sum per year and the value is reviewed periodically. Scholarships, once awarded, will continue throughout the school life of the pupil provided both his conduct and progress are satisfactory. Ogden Trust Sixth Form Science ScholarshipsThe Ogden Trust aims to sponsor British Students of outstanding scientific ability to attend leading independent schools in the Sixth Form. Wakefield Grammar School Foundation awards one of these prestigious scholarships annually at both Wakefield Girls’ High School and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. Each scholarship is worth up to 100% of fees, including discretionary allowances for uniform costs and essential school trips. Your daughter may be eligible if you can answer ‘yes’ to the following:

In exceptional circumstances more assistance may be available. What will I have to pay towards the fees?

Parents have to pay the balance of fees after the deduction of their Foundation Award. What happens if my situation changes?

Parental income will be reviewed annually in May each year and as a result adjustments made to the level of award, if appropriate. What about divorced or separated parents?

Income will usually be assessed on the parent who has actual custody of the child, plus that of his or her new spouse or partner. If applicable, maintenance payments from the other parent will be included as income. When do I apply for a Foundation Award?

7+ and 11+

Applications in respect to entry into the next academic year should be made from September onwards of the preceding year and by the 30th November, so that interviews can have taken place before the end of the Autumn Term.

Recommendations as to eligibility for Foundation Awards need to be made to the Heads before the Entrance Examinations early in the Spring Term.

16+

Applications for Sixth Form (16+) can be made during the Spring and Summer Term prior to the new academic year commencing in September. Applications can even be made following GCSE examination results in August.

Entrance Policy and Exam Guidelines

Candidates should also be able to express themselves clearly in writing by using Standard English at a level appropriate to level 5 and beyond. This will be tested partly through their written responses to the comprehension paper and partly through their extended response to one of a choice of specific written tasks. Candidates should be able to produce a variety of sentences and should be able to use varied vocabulary. They should also be able to use basic punctuation accurately and to organise ideas through the use of paragraphs and the way in which they sequence their ideas and information.

The tasks will not always be identical from year to year, nor will the nature of the passages. However, there will always be a comprehension paper of some kind and a task involving some writing of extended prose. Please note, in our experience, girls rarely do well on essay topics which they have prepared beforehand. General Paper

The general papers are used to obtain an indication of a girl’s IQ level. Although the English and Mathematics papers indicate levels of ability, candidates are also required to sit two general papers. These test candidates’ powers of verbal and non-verbal reasoning and are used for additional information, for instance when there is an unusually large discrepancy between a candidate’s performance in the English and Mathematics papers.

Entrance Examinations 13+ and 14+Since the girls who join the high school at 13+ and 14+ come from many different types of school with varying styles of teaching, this is taken into account fully in both the assessment for entrance and subsequent work with those whom we accept. English

The examination, together in some cases with an interview, is intended to find out how far a girl’s use of language has progressed in the years after 11, beyond the achievement of an average pupil at the end of National Curriculum Key Stage 2. We are also looking for potential for further development. The examination will not have the same format every year and past papers are not made available.

Nonetheless normal teaching in school should provide adequate preparation, especially because the skills required are all those which are covered by the National Curriculum.

We are interested to see how well she can: - Convey information in writing or speaking

- Express an opinion or follow an argument

- Understand both non-fiction and imaginative material - which she has read

- Benefit from reading widely for her own pleasure with - sustained concentration

- Be aware of events in the world around her

- Write about her own experiences

- Write imaginatively

- Adapt her expression to suit a variety of - circumstances

- Produce appropriate sentence structures and - accurate spelling

- Show some initiative if she is given an unfamiliar - exercise or task to do

Entrance Examinations 11+ and 12+ Mathematics

The examination papers are written in the style of national end of Key Stage papers, with spaces left on the paper for working out answers. The questions on the 11+ and 12+ paper are in two sections: Section A is a mixture of questions predominantly at National Curriculum level 5 that cover a whole range of topics. Section B is made up of extension questions which are more difficult and allow candidates to show their mathematical flair and precision.

The majority of candidates should expect to complete most or all of the questions in Section A, and score well. Both sections are non-calculator and cover a range of topics from the National Curriculum strands of numbers, algebra, shape, space, reasoning and handling data.

Questions may be set on topics that will not be familiar to the candidates. In such circumstances, there will be sufficient information provided to allow candidates to progress under their own initiative since we are hoping to predict future potential rather than to test present knowledge.

We are aware that topics are covered in different orders in different schools and do not expect every candidate to be familiar with all the content of her entrance paper English

Candidates at 11+ and 12+ will be expected to have reached level 5, or beyond, in the National Curriculum attainment targets by the end of the academic year. They should, therefore, demonstrate an ability to read and comprehend a range of passages, which may include both literary and non-literary material. This ability is to be examined through the candidates’ responses to questions set on such texts. The questions will test candidates’ literal comprehension, interpretive ability, and their ability to use details from the texts to support their ideas. Candidates may be asked about the effects of certain words or phrases used by an author.

This will allow us to assess carefully how well candidates will cope with joining the programme of study after it has started and where necessary, be able to catch up on topics already taught. An interview with a member of the languages department will take place to assess a candidates oral language skills.

In addition, where appropriate, an examination will be set to assess a candidate’s written language skills.

Pick up and journey times may be subject to change, and are at the discretion of the bus companies.

All return routes are in reverse (unless stated otherwise) departing at 4.15pm. The pick-up point for the home journey will be confirmed to parents and pupils by the bus companies.

When after school commitments prevent a pupil from catching a school bus, it is the responsibility of the

parent(s) to make alternative arrangements. Pupil Behaviour on School Buses

Pupils using a school bus are expected to behave appropriately at all times, displaying respect and courtesy towards the bus driver and other pupils. All buses are fitted with seat belts which must be worn at all times when the bus is moving.

In the event of misbehaviour, the bus companies have the right to contact the parents of the individual concerned and the Deputy Head of their school.

Take first exit to join the A650 (Wakefield).

Continue on A650 across 2 roundabouts.

At third roundabout join the A61 (City Centre) and continue on this road taking the left fork at the first traffic lights.

Centenary House - the pre-prep school for boys age 4-7 years is located on Blenheim Road, the left hand turn just before the traffic lights

The main Queen Elizabeth Grammar School campus is located on the left hand side.

The visitors car park is the first left after the main entrance (signed) on Albion Street, just before the main school building. From the M1 Northbound


Take third exit to join the A636 (Wakefield). Continue on A636 across first roundabout (Red Kite Pub).

Continue on A636 across two further roundabouts past Pugneys Country Park.

At the fourth roundabout turn right into Ings Road

At the traffic lights bear left on to the A61 (Leeds). Continue on A61 over three roundabouts (past Trinity Walk on your left) and into Northgate.

The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School campus is located on the right hand side.

The visitor car park is adjacent to Northgate Stores on Albion Street.

At the traffic lights, continue straight on rejoining the A650 (City Centre). Continue down this road. Driving down Wentworth Street, Clayton Hospital is on the left hand side.

Take third exit to join the A636 (Wakefield).

Continue on A636, passing Pugneys Country Park on your right hand side. You will pass under a railway bridge and continue across two further roundabouts.

Continue straight over at the roundabout.

At the next roundabout take the left exit onto Ings Road. Continue on Ings Road until the junction with Westgate. Turn right onto Westgate.

Take the first left after Westgate Station onto Mulberry Way.

Follow Mulberry Way until you turn left onto Wentworth Street (just past Wakefield College).

At bottom of Albion Street turn left onto College Grove Road.

Drive along College Grove Road past the QEGS Campus and the turn to Westfield Road

The entrance to the pavilion and sports pitches is the second turn to the left.(Past the Police Headquarters)

Take the first left down Wentworth Terrace.

At the bottom, turn left onto Northgate.

Continue through the traffic lights and take the first right onto Blenheim Road, just past Centenary House (the QEGS Pre-prep school)

Follow the road round for c.300 yards.

The entrance to the pavilion and sports pitches is directly ahead.
