Preparing to start teaching.
When you leave Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and are about tostart teaching these are things you must know and do.
• You must make sure that you bring your Career Entry Profile withyou from university. This is a very important document and yourmentor will use it to set your statutory targets as an NQT.
• You must register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC) inthe category of Teacher (previous registration in another categoryis not sufficient). You will not be able to teach unless you areregistered as a Teacher with the EWC.
• You must immediately inform every school you are working withthat you are an NQT.
• Where you are working in a school on a regular basis you mustmake sure the Headteacher has informed the EWC with anInduction Notification Form (within 10 days of you starting in theschool). On receiving this form the EWC will allocate you ausername and password. On receipt of this information you areresponsible for downloading your Induction Profile.
• Your Induction Profile is what will be used to evaluate yourprogress during your induction period and without it you will notbe able to pass your induction period.
Starting to teach; your Induction Period.
• Your Induction period will last 380 school sessions: each sessionis equivalent to half a day.
3
During your induction period you will;
• Complete your Induction Profile.
• Complete and have registered 380 sessions that have beenverified by the Headteacher or the appropriate Senior Leader ofthe school.
• Engage in Continuous Professional Development, keeping a fullrecord in your EWC Professional Learning Passport.
In order to support you during your Induction Period;
• You will be allocated a School Based Mentor (SBM) by yourschool.
• You will be allocated an External Mentor (EM).
• You will be required to attend the Regional Training Programmefor NQTs. This training will be open to every NQT including ShortTerm Supply teachers. It is essential to pre-book places for eachseparate event.
• You have access to the ERW website and to the CurriculumSupport available. www.erw.wales/curriculum-support
