In the early part of the summer of 1776 a few men gathered secretly in a room in the Pennsylvania State House (today called Independence Hall) to plot against King George III. They were fearful of even opening the windows in case a Tory agent heard them utter any words of treason. On July 4 in that crowded room they pledged to honor a cause that they were not sure would survive. Their declaration was not made public until a few days later. Six of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were members of Christ Church, Philadelphia. It appeared that they reported their actions to the vestry. While the document was still secret, the Vestry voted to drop all prayers for the king. A little over a year later their rector, The Reverend William White, was voted chaplain to the Continental Congress. He later would be elected as the first Presiding Bishop of the newly formed Episcopal Church. There were other members of the Episcopal Church involved in the forma- tion of our country’s founding. Alexander Hamilton was a lay reader and member of Trinity Parish, New York City. George Washington had served on the vestry, was a lay reader and warden. He was a devoted church member until his death. The chief architect of the Constitution, James Madison, was active in the church. His cousin, also named James Madison, was the first bishop of Virginia. John Marshall, the father of The Supreme Court, was a life-long member of the Episcopal Church. Our involvement in the civic and political affairs of our nation, seeking to guarantee justice and freedom for all citizens, is a part of our Episcopal legacy. God is active in the public square as well as in the pews. Independence Day, America and Anglicanism A friend and clergy colleague wrote an informative article about the 4th of July holiday we call Independence Day and the contribution of Episcopalians. There were other members of the Episcopal Church involved in the forma-tion of our country’s founding. The proposal for a Declaration of Independ-ence was the idea of ‘Light Horse’ Harry Lee. Thomas Jefferson, a principle author of that document, was a life long Episcopalian even with his liberal leanings regarding church and religion. Worship Seek ways to incorporate children and youth into worship. Will also explore regular Sunday worship that is geared toward children

The Vestry Identifies Parish life and Ministry Goals The vestry identified 5 areas of parish life and mission as priorities. This is the outcome of the Mutual Ministry Review done in May of 2009. The priest and vestry will provide leadership by calling on members to assist in the various areas and setting deadlines for completion.

ADMINISTRATION

Rick Britton will work with the Worship Advisory Committee. Members are Meg Sherrill, Sue Stolz, Mark Brown, John Michael Shrewsbury, Lyn Bingham, Paula Wade and Rollie Mains, Director of Music.

Financial Stewardship Explore the possibility of a long-range financial plan. Recruit a chair for Fall Stewardship Campaign to solicit pledge income for 2011 Mission and Ministry Budget. Begin to create a way to recruit leadership for annual stewardship drive. The Budget and Finance Committee will investigate the first goal. Ken Love is the vestry rep and leader to recruitment leadership for fall stewardship campaign.

Outreach The Vestry recognized Outreach as it relates to East Nashville Hope Exchange. The vestry acknowledged the completion of the non-profit application for Hope Exchange. The ENHE Ministry Development Committee will continue to see this process through as well as give over site to current summer programming. The members of the ENHE Ministry Development Committee are Shani Dowell (chair), Tom Hardin, Chris Klein, Sarah Goodrich, Edith Foster and Beth Preston. Attention will also be given to continuing grant writing and fundraising efforts. The vestry affirmed that our life and ministry depends upon recruiting, training and empowering lay ministry. The gifts and talents of our members are crucial as we live into our potential as a congregation.
