Video

-The video was filmed at CSUMB. Students got together and spoke about their own struggles to pay for college and tried to stop new tuition increases.

-Library action also occured to get more library hours sooner. (Peete's isn't enough room for everyone working on finals, plus when it gets crowded the noise makes it hard to concentrate.)

Reasons Behind Tuition Increase

Inflation

Newer technologies

Increased cost of living

Government cuts to education

Inflation

Page 15: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Inflation

•Over the past couple of decades the value of the US dollar has gone down substantially and as such its buying power has decreased.

•With the decreased buying power the amount of money required to get most materials and services has gone up.

•As such the tuition required would obviously need to go up in order to compensate for the increased cost of providing those materials.

Page 16: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Newer Technologies

Page 17: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Newer Technology

•As the technology of our time gets more advanced, it also gets more expensive. As such the schools in order to stay up to date with their tech and stay competitive, need to buy newer tech.

•With limited initial funds, there are only a few other ways of obtaining the required additional funds.

•One of those ways would be tuition increase, which in the end does make sense as the students are one of the main benefactors of the updated tech.

Page 18: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Increased cost of living

Page 19: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Increased cost of living

•As the cost of living goes up in California the CSU system needs to raise the pay of their employees to make sure that they can support themselves.

•In view of the past cuts to the education funding, in order to keep up with labor costs there needs to be an additional influx of funding, and once again there are only a few ways in order to gain those funds in the short time that they are necessary.

Page 20: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Government cuts to education

Page 21: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Government cuts to education

•Over the past couple of decades the government funding of education has dropped significantly as the country has been going through its financial crisis.

•These cuts have left most schools throughout the country having to both cut classes, lay off teachers, and decrease the length of the school year repeatedly.

•These cuts have also hit the CSU system hard as well, and in order to stay competitive as schools the CSUs can not afford to drop as many classes and professors as they would need to, to keep up with the budget cuts.

Page 22: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Cont.

•As such it leaves the system with only a few options to bridge the gap in the funding, and one of the most reliable methods of obtaining income is through tuition increases.

Organizations Major Actors for Different Sides of Issue

President Obama: "Obama wants to make it easier for everyone to go to college". He wants to expand the federal Pell Grant. To help for students from lower-income families to go to college and from potentially get jobs. He plans to determine whether these colleges provide enough graduates who have jobs fresh out of college.

Page 24: Increase of Tuition Over Years

Another Major Actor...Mitt Romney: Romney's plan was to make information

on schools and majors more accessible to students. He was also planning to cut federal Pell Grant funding to students, leaving many low-income students without these funds. In addition, Romney is in favor of "for-profit" schools creating their own loans. According to an Aug.26 Reuters article by Stephanie Simon, Romney believes that this creates competition between "for-profit" schools which would lower cost of education in the long run.

Explain the Position We're Taking

" Having an educated population is better than having an non-educated population"

• we are AGAINST tuition increases

• Came to college to learn, not be in debt.

• people drop out

• take out too many loans

• quality of school (what we pay isn't what we get out of it)

"Action" Component

-What objectives do you/did you plan to achieve?

*our object: to show awareness that just because we are students; doesn't mean we do not have a say. We want to stand up and fight for what is right because students are the ones being mainly hurt by these tuition increases.
