Welcome to the 1st edition of our Newsletter for 2010. We closed the year on a high note with Per-formance Awards. We thank God so much for pulling us through a difficult time in the history of the hospital, where we are constantly faced with depleting resources, particularly Human Resources. We have seen a lot of our General Orderlies reaching their retirement and exiting the service and many more staff of all categories passing on ,”May their souls rest in peace” The new financial year has started and we also have submitted our plans on our needs for func-tions to Head Office. We are hoping that things will improve and we shall receive the necessary support. The focus of the Department is on Service Delivery outcomes-To that and we need to im-prove on:– • Maternal Child and Woman, Health Care Services-with reduction on maternal Mortality and

infant mortality • HIV and Aids Management –With the new guidelines we should be ready for a drastic in-

crease of clients, strengthen initiation at clinics and encourage community and Staff for HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) as well as for Male Medical Circumcision (MMC)

• Improve access by strengthening our participation in the Flagship Programme as it allows our communities quality services. The numerous “Operation Mbo” interventions that the hospital and clinics have been part of are beginning to bear fruit.

We also need to focus on improving our data management and use all available materials to em-power ourselves for this task, from the PHC Facilities to the Hospital. We need to exercise constraint on expenditure and closely monitor our budget as we have done previously. This year we are due for BFHI assessments and I do trust that we will come through tops, as al-ways. We have also been nominated for piloting Norms and Standards in Zululand Health District. Three managers have retired from Nursing Management component, but we are hoping to replace them soon. Our M & E Manager Mrs P Kheswa left at the end of March 2010, AMN for O&G-Ms. G Sithole left at the end of May and our Nursing Manager –Mrs SD Dladla is leaving at the end of July. This has depleted the already short staffed Nursing Management. The HR office is busy with adverts for re-placements. May I take this opportunity to wish them well in their retirement, they all served the department with enthusiasm and their contributions will be remembered. To all those who have joined Nkonjeni in 2010 , a Warm Welcome to you all and I hope you’ll en-joy your stay with us and will grow and develop in your careers God Bless you all DJ Linda (CEO )

GREETINGS It brings me great pleasure to write a Nkonjeni Hospital Newsletter, before going any further allow me to intro-duce myself, . This month we bring you our first issue of the long awaited Newsletter for 2010. It’s been a long road putting it together because my goal was to make it more informative and work with an editorial team that will help put this baby to rest, my team and I hope to give you the issue more often than you are used to, meaning you will get your newsletter 3 times a year or more. My team and I hope to give you more information and more enter-tainment in every issue. We would like you as the reader to participate in giving us news that is accurate, enter-taining and mostly informative to add into our issues; after all you play a measure role in the institution. In this issue we look at the different celebrations of health awareness days such as World Blood Donor Day, to name a few. Every month there is a day that is dedicated to bring awareness to the people or which is cele-brated in the health sector so we need to be aware of all of them and be part of the awareness campaigns...I would also like you to look and read more about previous campaigns held in the Institution/Clinics itself in this issue From my editorial team and I we say enjoy…. The Editor …….

Speech by HPT Sister T.S. Cebekhulu

PURPOSE OF THE DAY

Launching of HPT support group at Mdumezulu Clinic. THEME OF THE DAY “INHLIZIYO YOMUNTU INJINI YOMUNTU, NGAKHO ZINAKEKELE” “ISIFO SENHLIZIYO UMANYONYOBA, YAZISE IMPILO YAKHO”

Aim of the support group is to support each other as clients in the clinic & even in the com-

munity for example when they are at Plaza complex, when one collapses they can call the ambulance to send other colleague to hospital. Support group can make wonders by making gardens in the clinic. That support group can ask the agriculture adviser to couch them with their gardens.

We elected the support group successfully. Committee was orientated to the following functions: Support each other. Improve communicative skills. Arrange HPT clients & discipline when necessary in the clinic. Encourage to work together and support each other.

Eat well balance diet – eat low salt diet & low fatty foods. Lifestyle – avoid smoking - low alcohol consumption.

Take treatment regularly as told. Report your problems either socially, emotionally & physically.

Consultation: Citizens should be con-sulted about the level and quality of the public services they receive and, wherever possible, should be given a choice about the services that are offered.

There are many ways to consult users of services including conducting customer surveys, interviews with individual users, consultation with groups, and holding meet-ings with consumer representative bodies, NGOs and CBOs. Often, more than one method of consultation will be necessary to ensure comprehensiveness and represen-tative ness. Consultation is a powerful tool that enriches and shapes government poli-cies such as the Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) and its implementation in Lo-cal Government sphere.

Each issue of the newslet-ter we will be talking dis-cussing one principle of the Batho Pele as we all know there are 11 princi-ples in KZN and each is important

I'm Noxolo Elsie Siqwayi, I come from the Home Af-fairs Department (Zululand Region) I came to Nkon-jeni to do Births and deaths certificate for clients who are receiving help within the institution, and I believe the Ministers suggestion of bringing services to the institution was an excellent idea. When we look at the challenges faced by people both economically and socially, and since I've started the public seems to be appreciating the Department for bringing the office to this Institution.
