I was recently given the opportunity to visit Jersey: A place I had never been to

before and, to be frank, had not given all that much thought to either. I wonder

how many people, when debating their next holiday destination, think, “Ah, of

course, I’ll go to Jersey.” But I’m certain you all can tell where I am going with

this spiel by now: My trip to Jersey was in reality extremely enjoyable!

It was all a bit of a mystery to me for a long while. What would I be doing there? I

honestly knew next to nothing about Jersey when I arrived, but by the end of my 2-day

excursion, kindly provided by the London Oxford Airport and Manx2.com, that was no

longer the case:

The history of Jersey is rich and vibrant – being a British Crown Dependency so close

to Normandy (approx. 14 miles away at its closest point) it has its fair share of war

stories to share. If you are thinking of visiting the island and want to learn more about

it I highly recommend booking a tour with Arthur the Blue Badge Guide. The tour Arthur

gave us was full of personality, and, being an islander himself, loads of little-known

interesting facts about the place.

As an island in between two countries not known for their tropical climate, imagine my

surprise when we touched down in sunshine and warm breezes after leaving a grey

England! This beautiful weather lasted the entire trip, and how stunning Jersey is really

shone through. Jersey is home to the whole spectrum of accommodation, too, so you

will find something to suit your personal tastes – we were generously put up at the

Grand Jersey, a 5-star luxury hotel and Michelin star restaurant, and it was mind-

blowing: Service, décor, dining, all 10/10.

The scenery was one of rolling hills, rich green woods, winding country roads, and the

most amazingly colourful flowers all around. The day after I left, Jersey would be hosting

its annual “Battle of the Flowers” parade consisting of huge floats made from thousands

of flowers. We visited some of the workshops where local families were making these

floats and the artisanship was awe-inspiring. The South coast of Jersey features white

sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, while the North consists of dramatic cliffs and

bays. No matter what kind of trip you’re planning Jersey will provide – whether it’s

hiking around footpaths without seeing another soul for miles, kayaking or sailing

through waters both calm and tempestuous, sunning yourself on soft beaches, surfing

(very big with the islanders), or hitting the towns for some shopping – Jersey really

does have it all.

Would you have even thought it? The only Crocodile Zoo in the UK is situatedhere in Oxfordshire! To be precise at Crawley Mill near Witney. And what anabsolute treasure it is.

Under the professional care and ownership of Shaun Foggett the Zoo has been runningfor nearly two years and it just keeps growing. There are over 60 residents and thatnumber keeps increasing as we witnessed.

I took my eight year old grandson Alfie to the zoo and to our amazement actually sawone dwarf crocodile hatching before our very eyes. You only need to be in Shaun’scompany for a few minutes to realize that this is a labour of love for him. Shaun gaveup his full time job and immersed himself into his obsessive love of crocodiles, alligatorsand caimans and has assembled in such a short space of time an incredible range ofanimals. From crocodiles to turtles, from alligators to chameleons and from caimansto lizards.

Presently the only Open Viewing Day is on a Sunday, but you need to book well inadvance as these days are very popular as are their Snappy Sundays that includetraining demonstrations and talks and the chance to be photographed, holding acrocodile! These are held on the first Sunday of every month. During the week there areguided or private Zoo tours and group visits available by arrangement. Crocodile partiesare also available!

For my sins I was quite nervous about the visit (I even get worried about frogs!), butonce inside the viewing areas there was a calm that descended, that made both Alfieand I quite relaxed as Shaun has gone to pains to ensure that the whole experience istotally safe. There are underwater viewing areas and also the possibility of seeing thefeeding of the residents which as Shaun said has to be undertaken with great care.

The hatching though was the highlight, to see the snout of a baby crocodile appearingthrough the jagged edge of a broken egg was a sight to behold. It was something I’llnever forget and Alfie has a remarkable tale to tell for the rest of his life!

There are many other exceptional features to expand on, but the fact that this venueis a self contained indoor facility means that it never closes and is open throughout therages of the fiercest winter. The Zoo is also a breeding centre, dedicated to protectingand increasing the numbers of some of the world’s most endangered species.

Shaun is rapidly running out of space and may well need to move to larger premises, and deserves the support of the planners to ensure that this fantastic enterprise isallowed to grow and flourish. But don’t worry it won’t be that far from his presentlocation.

Oxford Castle – Unlocked is a 1000-year castle, which was also used as a place of

incarceration for over 800 years. The attraction offers a 40-minute guided tour with

a costumed character from the castle’s history.

Visitors to the site can experience the austere confines of the 18th century Debtors’

Tower and Prison D-wing; feel the dark atmosphere of the 900 year old underground

Crypt where the education for which Oxford is famed began; marvel at the Mound of

the 11th century motte and bailey castle; climb the Saxon St George’s Tower – the

UK’s oldest surviving example as well as Oxford’s oldest building; and enjoy the unique

360° panoramic views over the historic city and its famous dreaming spires. Visitors can

now explore the newly opened vaulted well chamber and punishment cells which were

opened to the public for the first time in Spring 2012.

Learn about the real people and events from the site’s turbulent past: the first Oxford

teachings, the owners, visionaries, activists and inmates. People like Marshall William

Smith, the King’s prison keeper during the English Civil War, who in the 1600s made

Oxford Prison as feared and notorious as Colditz; Mary Blandy, a convicted murderess,

who became an 18th century celebrity; Jack Ketch, the public executioner and the man

on whom the Punch & Judy hangman character was modelled; and Anne Green, who

survived her own hanging and narrowly escaped being anatomised by an Oxford

medical student in 1650! Tales of murder, romance, betrayal and execution are told

daily with tours leaving every 20 minutes.

Visitors can also take the opportunity to relax in Café 1071, which boasts a fantastic

view of the castle and mound, and offers a selection of hot and cold drinks, lunches and

snacks. The atmosphere is perfect for a lunch out, a coffee catch-up or a business

meeting on-the-go. Free wi-fi is available.

This August, Stagecoach performed a production of Hairspray the Musical writtenby Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, as a Summer showcase for their olderstudents, at Headington Hill School, Oxford.

The performers were aged between 10 and 19 years and they gave an incredibleperformance which was astonishingly cast and rehearsed in just one week. The showhad everything from perfect choreography, visual aids (clips of Martin Luther King andJohn F Kennedy) and a six piece live band. The creative team of Director David Wilson,Musical Director Jemma Harris and choreographer Alice Chilver set exacting standards, clearly in sync with producer Maya Sprigg’s vision for the piece.

Amy Vicary-Smith (Tracy Turnblad), had an amazing voice which captivated theaudience and lead us through her journey, with co-star Shakur Gabbidon-Williams(Seaweed J. Stubbs), to freedom for all, stardom and love. Tracy’s quirky sidekick PennyPingleton was ably played by the highly gifted Clemi Collett, whose ‘off the wall’humour kept the audience amused throughout. Raphael Pace (Link Larkin) and RyanAnderson (Corny Collins) threw themselves into their parts demonstrating incrediblevocal ability. Arran Johnson (Edna Turnblad) was humorous and sensitive, a young manwho had it all. Ruby Crepin-Glyne (Motormouth Maybelle) and Chantelle Vircavs(Amber Von Tussle) were both stunning and very talented actresses.

Special mention to the young performers in the cast who were extremely professionaland performed well beyond their years.

I can honestly say I couldn’t fault this production; I thoroughly enjoyed it from start tofinish. And to make it extra special the cast were joined by Stagecoach’s annualexchange students from Malta. Well done to all of you!

And the fun didn’t stop there; the audience also took part in the production by dressingup in 60’s costumes. Great effort everyone!

Maya Sprigg, Principal of Stagecoach Oxford, dedicates her life to these talentedperformers and you can see the rewards Maya enjoys in stunning performances suchas these.

With very different business backgrounds, Fiona Hosking and Sarah Colebrooke

are somewhat unlikely business partners. However, Fiona (who had a long career

in Media sales) and Sarah (ex nurse and now property entrepreneur) discovered

when they met on a charity committee that they shared an ambition to run their

own business, specifically in on-line retail and more specifically, working with

artisans.

Launched in March 2012, presentlocker.com is the new kid on the block of websites

selling handmade and handpicked gifts. Presentlocker.com charges their artisans an

annual membership fee and a commission on each sale. However, what makes them

different is their wish right from the outset to help graduates and back-to-work artisans

by offering “The Presentlocker.com Awards”. “We are keen to support graduates who are

embarking on their art and design careers, and would like to give them the opportunity

to market their work on our site. We are offering free membership for a year plus six

months of commission free sales through presentlocker.com to the successful

candidates. The plan is to offer one award each quarter,” said Sarah.

“We uncover our prospective vendors via a number of routes but mainly through fairs

and exhibitions. There seems to be a real thirst from customers for handmade and

original work, so it is this genre of artisans that we are constantly scouting for. We

already have some talented and very varied contributors to the site: Northfield

Primitives make small, vintage-look animals. The circus elephant is beautifully

handmade and stitched entirely on a 1920 Singer treadle sewing machine. Definitely

a decorative pressie as opposed to a toy for children. Nigel Turner (National Portrait

Gallery exhibitor) will paint a personalised pop art oil painting or a beautiful

watercolour of your house, school or office. Already a best seller is Kiss in a Box, costing

just £3.50 plus postage. Rebecca Engels makes the most exquisite and unique cushions,

bags and bracelets, from vintage materials.”

“We also stock beautiful handmade unique French Oak Utility Cheese Boards which are

hand crafted from wine barrels used in the ageing process of red wines. Cleverly

recycled, each board has a character of its own, the wood may even be stained a subtle

hue of burgundy or lingering aroma of red wine. A present for the wine buff in your

life?”

You can find these and other perfect presents at presentlocker.com.

I visited Maba on a Sunday evening with my wife, together with our daughterand her partner.

I was in Bicester during the week before our visit and had popped in for coffee as apreliminary introduction to Maba to gauge the feel during the week as well as at theweekend. OK it’s a new restaurant but I was struck by the style with which Maba hadbeen designed – was I really in Bicester?

It’s a fresh, vibrant restaurant, incredibly busy for a Tuesday morning. Before I had pulledmy chair in I was greeted with a friendly smile and offered a drink. I had a small blackcoffee and a couple of slices of toast and watched the world go by. Bicester is changing, and Maba is perfectly positioned to witness a new vitality being breathed into thisfairly weary market town. With a new superstore and cinema complex underconstruction, not to mention the huge new housing estate and Bicester Villageexpansion, if Maba is busy now, well…… it’s going to be jam-packed every hour of everyday soon!

The great thing when I returned on the Sunday was that I was recognised. I’d only beenin for a coffee, but that’s customer service for you.

The restaurant had been open for just three months, so you sub-consciously makeallowances for this, but the staff were spot on in all they did throughout the evening. The food and service were to a very high standard and we had an excellent evening.

The Head Waiter (Peter) took our drinks order and our waitress (Georgie) gave usadequate time to review the menu. Both Peter and Georgie were not only pleasant butwell informed and gave us real confidence when ordering that we would have a greatmeal.

The main courses are served on attractive, wooden platters. The presentation wasbeautiful. I had the steak and I’m a bit fussy when it comes to how I like my steakcooked. I asked for it to be cooked medium but it arrived just a touch overcooked. Before I knew it a replacement steak was presented cooked perfectly. No fuss, no hassle.Great customer service.

We will definitely be returning to Maba.

The Trout in Lower Wolvercote is seriously unique. The large terrace looking outonto the River Thames is perfect to help you relax – there’s nothing better on ahot day than to sip a cool drink and watch the trout dance in the frothing water, and with past visitors including Lewis Carroll to CS Lewis, it is easy to see whyThe Trout is the pub of dreams and a genuine part of the rich tapestry that isOxford life.

Step inside and you will find an exquisite country pub with a great atmosphere that hasbeen tastefully restored to incorporate its historic values with stylish modern aspects.

The à la carte offer covered both the Brasserie Menu – with everyone’s favourite pizzas, pastas, fish dishes, salads and meats from the grill – and the Specials Menu with aseasonal and ‘fine dining’ offer. Our visit, being a Sunday, coincided with their regular‘Great British Roast’, but we opted instead for the specials, with starters of seared beef, beetroot and orange salad and black pearl scallops with a chickpea, barlotti bean andtomato cassoulet, and main courses of baked lemon sole with moules mariniere andpan fried turbot with a lemon dauphinoise and steamed green lipped mussels.

The food lived up to and exceeded our expectations. The flavours were well balancedand the portion sizes generous, and was all complimented by the waiter’s well-advisedwine choice (a delicious Rothschild, Viognier). In fact, all of the staff lived up to theinitial welcome; they were exceptionally friendly, attentive and knew the food and drinkinside and out, so were able to advise and describe as required.

For me, the desserts are the key to any meal, and we weren’t to be let down as wewent for a traditional chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and a seasonal summerfruit brûlée. The brownie was (thankfully after two generous courses!) not heavy buttasty and light, while the brûlée combined a fruit compote base with a rich, creamycustard. It was the perfect end to a delicious meal. The Trout manages to pull off adifficult trick, as it is both a comfortable and friendly local for Wolvercote residents(I noticed one sat enjoying a book and a pint on their own), but also a destination tobe sought out by those living elsewhere in the city and county.

Is there anything I would change? I’d say, no. This pub is an Oxford institution that notonly offers a warm refuge in winter and a cool, open atmosphere in summer, but listensto and knows its clientele. Keeping its traditional roots alive while serving top-notchfood alongside exemplary service, I don’t think The Trout will ever silence of its happyhum of contented guests.
