If you are looking for some great ideas for September, look no further than this month’sexcellent edition of In Oxford Magazine.

Why not pick up your racket and head off to the fantastic North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club. Withgrass and hard courts, plus excellent club house facilities, a family membership is an excellent wayto have fun and get fit.

Our featured restaurant this month is Brasserie Blanc which seems to be perpetually full, whichis a sign of a great restaurant! We have been keeping our reviewer Dalton well fed in August withreviews of Al Andalus in Little Clarendon Street and Al Salam in Park End Street.

One of our longest serving In Oxford Magazine customers, Sarah Wiseman of Wiseman Gallery,is also featured in this edition, and James visits Bicester Hotel, Golf and Spa to sample its manydelights.

Make sure you read Tina’s review on Stagecoach, a fantastic local theatre group givingyoungsters the opportunity to tread the boards and experience cutting edge drama at its best.Tina obviously enjoyed Billy Elliot which was performed in Headington during August, so read thereview to find out more about this wonderful organization.

On an incredibly sad note, Cem Muldur, proprietor of Queens Lane Coffee House in the HighStreet, passed away, unexpectedly, in July. From all of us at In Oxford Magazine, we would like tosend our condolences to his family, friends and staff. Cem was such a kind and gentle person, always willing to spend time and have a chat. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to agood friend.

Lead Article

I often drive past Brasserie Banc on my way home or on the way into town on aSaturday. I doubt Monsieur Blanc has gone to the trouble of hiring actors to sitin his always inviting brasserie, but it always seems packed to me.

I’ll be honest. I was never a big fan of the blue and white décor, but the new mustardand burgundy colour scheme warms the heart and just seems more inviting. With avibrant and discerning client base on its doorstep, Brasserie Blanc is a magnet forlocals and residents of a wider catchment area.

The ideal venue to grab a business lunch or relax from noon to whenever! I jumped atthe chance to review when GM Claudia Reiter invited me. Adopting the ‘poacher turnedgamekeeper’ role, we visited the brasserie on a Friday night, when the restaurant wasat its busiest. Sat prominently in the window, it was our turn to be envied by thepassing traffic, which would have been even more envious had it known how well wewere feasting inside.

The brasserie has an excellent vibe. With hearty laughter echoing from the spaciousback room through to the front ‘salon’, smart waiters and waitresses buzzing around, with smiles on their faces I hasten to add, and the delicious smells of the kitchen’sendeavours wafting throughout, it’s no wonder this place is always rammed.

Tina began with a glass of champagne and the crispy goat’s cheese parcel with tomatochutney, whilst I had a cheeky Friday night beer to accompany my excellent Porkrillettes with apple & pear chutney.

I had already seen the fabulous grilled King Prawns with garlic mayonnaise dish beingdelivered to neighbouring tables as we were making our choices, and this was an easyone to plump for. I wasn’t wrong. King Prawns at their best. Tina, a sucker for samphire, chose the mouthwatering cod fillet with samphire, mussel and saffron sauce.

To accompany our meal, we ordered a bottle of Chablis (Domaine Chalmeau). Light, dryand chilled, it was the perfect partner for our main.

For dessert, Tina chose the rhubarb and crumble from the specials board and I went forthe rhubarb and custard cup. Two very different takes on the same dish, but both firstclass. The rhubarb chunks I had were deliciously pink and ripe – almost like tender beefin their texture.

With thanks to the staff of Brasserie Blanc for serving us so well. The attention andservice we received was impeccable but with a warm, engaging personality which is sorare. Our waitress took a great interest in not just us but every table she was serving, taking time to get to know the guests and make their visit to this wonderful gem inJericho one to remember.

The paintings that make up the series Recapturing a Certain Youth are made from photographs taken inthe 1950’s and are inspired by the artist’s mother. Icons are used in the Eastern Orthodox Church to focusworshippers' prayers. Their form and function have hardly changed over the last fifteen centuries and their spiritual

message is retained even in a museum setting.

This exhibition will show Greek and Russian icons from the Picture Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum which are normally not on view. Among them are St George and the Dragon from around 1500 which has just been cleaned and restored to its former splendour and two

Ashmolean fragments from a large Last Judgement, which are certainly the most important Russian icons preserved in Oxford.

Oxford is a beautiful city that has been a source of inspiration for many artists

and writers. At the Sarah Wiseman Gallery this September we are celebrating

the City with an exhibition about Oxford by artists Alison Pullen, David Atkins and

David Rhys Jones. What is unique about this exhibition is that none of these

artists live here, we have selected them for their artistic flair and style, inviting

them to come to the city and respond to its beauty and energy.

The results are amazing; all three artists have won major UK awards for their work and

have bought their unique artistic vision to bear on the city.

Alison Pullen is famous for her paintings of interiors, using an ingenious method of

painting on top of a photographic collage to create an incredible multilayered image.

For the exhibition she has been working at the Bodleian Library and colleges

throughout the year, producing paintings that communicate the majesty and

history of the interiors of these world famous buildings. In the past Alison has worked

in many famous buildings including Buckingham Palace and the V&A.

David Atkins has been championed from college by the art critic Brian Sewell, he

established his career with his landscape paintings however in recent years he has

turned his attention to the cities, with trips to Venice, New York and closer to home

Oxford and London. This exhibition will be his second collection of paintings of Oxford.

The first collection exhibited in 2009 was of the city in winter with dark rainy skies

punctuated with occasional golden sunlight. He loved the city so much that he was

delighted to be painting here over this summer; with a strong focus on the river at

Magdalen Bridge making this collection is a real celebration of the city enjoying the

summer.

David Rhys Jones is one of this years joint winners of the 2010 Jerwood Applied Art

Prize, his photographic work on ceramics are a form of social documentary that record

a mix of cultures and architecture found in modern day cities. His work is based on

journeys and he has explored the city with great vigour walking around looking for the

quirky and unique, things that make Oxford, Oxford. The collection is a great success

and these ceramic wall pieces are sure to be highly collectable.

kids Review

Stagecoach Oxford’s senior and advanced students presented a sensationalproduction of Billy Elliott at Headington School Theatre, Oxford. I have beenfortunate, as will many In Oxford readers, to have seen many West End shows, and Principal Maya Sprigg has once again engineered a performance whichwouldn’t look out of place in London.

Based on the widely acclaimed film, Billy Elliot the Musical is an inspirational story ofone boy’s dream to realise his ambitions against the odds. Set in the North East ofEngland at the time of the 1984 / 85 miners' strike, Billy pursues his dream andpassion for dance. In the context of a brutal, harsh and sometimes bloody landscape, the stresses and strains of a family united in fighting for a worthy cause whilst at thesame time suffering massive financial pressures would not tolerate dreams when theharsh reality of life was so dire. Billy’s only choice is to dance in private to avoid thecondemnation of his struggling family.

The choreography for the riots was exceptional and very realistic. The sensitivity of ayoung boy who was so different to those around him was perfectly pitched, intertwining Billy’s love of a mum who had passed away. Goose bumps!

The cheekiness of Billy and his friend Michael, singing and dancing throughout and theclever interaction with the audience provided treasured memories of a superbproduction.

However, the most amazing fact about Stagecoach’s adaptation of Billy Elliott is thatthe cast had just ONE WEEK to rehearse. With a cast ranging from eight to eighteen, acting with such professional enthusiasm, Maya and her team will no doubt have beenimmensely proud of each and every one of the cast and must take great credit for afirst class production.

I couldn’t pick out one outstanding member of the cast because there were so manybrilliant performances. Clementine Collett as Mrs. Wilkinson, George Watkins as Dad andGeorge Readshaw as Tony, just to mention a few, were brilliant. It was nice to seeThomas Conroy, who played Billy Elliott, really getting stuck into his part and not beingafraid to dance. Well done Thomas.

Maya spends months planning this event every year, offering her senior students theinvaluable opportunity to experience a large professional production. Stagecoachbegins teaching children at aged four, offering a variety of training and performanceopportunities and is an excellent foundation for children wanting to follow a career inthe performing arts as well as those simply with an interest the theatre skills orwishing to boost confidence.

Stagecoach Oxford offers classes in singing, dance and drama in Headington and NorthOxford on Fridays or weekends. There are junior classes for age 4-7 and senior classesfor age 8-18, with an advanced group for age 16+ focusing on Grade 8 performancelevels and drama school entry.

Bicester Hotel, Golf and Spa sits in 134 acres of stunning countryside with tranquilgardens and an 18 hole golf course, it is the perfect Oxfordshire venue, ideal for leisurebreaks, business and golf. Inside you will discover chic accommodation, a luxury healthclub and spa, a comprehensive range of conference & banqueting facilities, excellent restaurants, a sportsbar showing all major sporting events and our own OFSTED registered crèche.

Page 50: In Oxford Magazine - September 2010

To properly review this superb venue, not only did I play the golf course, I hadthe good fortune to spend the night in the hotel and eat in the restaurant. Ididn’t get the opportunity to get my nails done or have a facial due to the spabeing fully booked, but then again, it most probably would have been wasted onme!

The hotel is located just off the A34, just a few miles from Bicester itself. Upon arrival, the reception team were friendly and helpful. In fact throughout my stay, everyonefrom the club made me feel welcome and relaxed.

The hotel is stunning and the significant investment over the past few years has reapedrewards. The rooms are spacious, well furnished and sumptuously designed. My roomhad a lounge area with a four poster bed, great for a romantic weekend away!

My colleague and I ate in the hotel’s restaurant and enjoyed an excellent meal. Thesalmon and the fillet of sea bass proved to be very good choices, whilst my colleaguechose the terrine of ham and the steak medallions. Breakfast in the morning wasequally impressive, a full cooked breakfast setting us up nicely for our round of golf.

The spa facilities are state of the art, including a huge pool, two Jacuzzis, steam room,a wet and dry sauna and an impressive gym which must rank as one of the best I haveever seen.

But we were here to play golf. No treadmills, pedicures or sit ups on this visit I’m afraid!

The golf course is comparatively short at just over 6,000 yards, but has testingfairways and strategically placed bunkers. It is a mature, traditional parkland coursewith a good amount of water (which I discovered on a regular basis!) There are a goodnumber of different and challenging holes on the course, and I found the back nineparticularly challenging.

Hole four is a very challenging long par four, with water on both sides, requiring a good, strong drive and then a long shot over more water. The eighth is a picturesque par three(again over a lake) which poses more than a few questions over club selection.Overall the greens were excellent and the bunkers well maintained. A great courseadding to a wonderful visit.

Restaurant Review

Halfway down Oxford's busy and eclectic Little Clarendon Street nestles AlAndalus – an oasis of delicious Spanish cuisine served with a smile.

My friend and I ate there on a balmy summer evening: just the kind of day that suitsMediterranean-style dining. Although, that said, I can imagine that the warm, atmospheric interior of Al Andalus would be just the thing to brighten a winter eveningas well. The environment is convivial, with larger tables to offer a perfect setting forgroups of friends to share together, but also more secluded areas ideal for coupleslooking for a quiet evening out.

The first thing that impressed me was the wine list. It's all too common to be faced byan identikit selection of predictable Chardonnays and Merlots -- but Al Andalus has abrilliant array of Spanish regional wines, many of which I'd never heard of. The bottleof white we plumped for turned out to be an inspired choice: floral, full and delicious. Also on offer are beers, sherries, sangria and more.

Then there's the food. With an impressive list of tapas (including a number ofchanging daily specials), there are far too many delicious-sounding dishes to sample inone sitting. Which -- of course -- just means you'll have to keep coming back untilyou've tried them all!

Fortunately (if you're as indecisive as us) the friendly waiting staff can guide you withsome fine recommendations. We decided to confine ourselves to the tapas menu, though the restaurant also serves a tempting selection of paellas (again, just one morereason to come back again and try them!)

Piquant patatas bravas -- fried potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce -- were definitely ahighlight, served with generous lashings of garlicky allioli. Then there were crisp, lemonywhitebait, and moreish muscles cooked in a subtly flavoured white wine sauce.

We also ate skewers of marinated pork and lamb, which had been grilled to perfection, leaving the outside lightly charred and the inside mouth-wateringly juicy and tender.

By this stage we were growing full ... but not full enough to pass up the delights of thedessert menu. Like the wine list, this was refreshingly distinctive, offering a range ofSpanish puddings you'd never normally have the chance to sample in this country. Ourchoice, the Crema Catalana, was a Catalan variant of the classic creme brulee. It sharedthe French dessert's bittersweet caramelised crunch and creamy vanilla interior, butwas infused with an aromatic bouquet of spices that turned it into a totally differentexperience.

I rounded this off with a cup of tea (my one choice of the evening that wasn'tauthentically Spanish!); my friend a coffee, which she proclaimed excellent.

Altogether, it was a lovely meal. And now that I know of this little pocket of Spainpractically on my doorstep, I'm certain I shall return.

Restaurant Review

If you like the idea of sampling an array of mouthwatering, exotic and colourfuldishes -- served up by friendly and knowledgable staff -- you will like Al Salam,an authentic Lebanese restaurant on the corner of Park End Street.

Whether you're new to this delicious and varied cuisine or are a seasoned afficionado, you'll encounter an explosion of delicious flavours that will surprise and delight.

The menu is so full of mouthwatering possibilities that you might find yourself hardpressed to choose. My friend and I decided to opt for a set menu -- whereby our waiterput together an assortment of dishes to suit our appetites. We are both meat-eaters,but had we been vegetarian (or, in fact, vegan) there would still have been optionsaplenty. As the waiter explained, a significant proportion of Lebanese dishes arevegetable-based -- good, I'd imagine, for vegetarians or vegans sick of being faced byonly one or two options on a standard restaurant menu.

Lebanese food also suits larger groups: the profusion of small delicacies lends itself tosharing many dishes amongst friends. That said, my friend and I sampled a largenumber of dishes, even though there were only two of us!

Our starters included a salad of tender broad beans; a plate of tabouleh singing withgreen parsley, gemlike tomato pieces and zingy lemon juice; and a superb assortmentof stuffed pastries and falafels: fine, crisp casings give way to delicious, flavoursomefillings. We also sampled some mildly spiced Armenian sausage -- not a million milesaway from Chorizo -- melt-in-the-mouth potatoes fried with garlic, chilli andcoriander, and more.

For our main courses, we shared a variety of grilled meats, along with aromaticLebanese rice and a delicious vegetable dish of okra cooked in a tomato sauce. Themeat was uniformly outstanding: it had clearly benefited from various deliciousmarinades, and had been quickly grilled at a searing heat with the result that everymouthful was meltingly tender. It's a rare pleasure to eat meat so perfectly cooked.

By the end of all of this, we were more than satisfied! Yet (purely in the interests of acomprehensive review, you understand) we were persuaded to finish with a selectionof baklawa - delicious nuggets of pastry festooned with honey, chopped nuts and spices. And to accompany this, a pot of bright, refreshing peppermint tea, which was worldsaway from the insipid infusions you buy in the supermarket, and the perfectpalate-cleanser at the end of a superb meal.

To close, I should mention that Al Salaam is staggeringly good value! A set menu costsonly £15 per person -- which, considering the quality and variety of food you'll receive,is an incredible price. I recommend it highly.
