Browns Oxford, set near the centre of ‘that sweet city with her dreaming spires’, was the second branch of Browns to open. It has become a landmark in the city, an institution

not quite as ancient as the university’s world-famous colleges, but one which has nonetheless stood the test of

time.

For many years the building was a Morris garage, which we converted into one of the first of its kind: an English brasserie. And the scene out of the windows is also pure

England: across the road is the church of St Giles, the church hall and a characterful terrace of 18th century

houses. But we’re also just a 5 minute walk away from the busy centre of the city.

As someone who spends a substantial proportion of his life installed in Quod

Brasserie on Oxford’s High Street, it will come as no surprise that I’m a fan of

what Jeremy Mogford has created for the city. He has shaken the Oxford dining

scene out of its complacency, providing benchmarks against which others are

judged. Of course it’s always possible to niggle about details, but if you looking

for consistently friendly service, great tasting food and stylish design, you need

look no further.

And so it is with Gees on Banbury Road. Re-born after a complete refurbishment, the

conservatory restaurant is filled with plants and mature olive trees, is less formal than

before, and now makes the most of its unique architecture. Change has not been

confined to the front of house. A wood-fired oven takes centre-stage in the kitchen,

and cuts of beef, pork, lamb and venison are cooked over a charcoal grill. There is a

welcome simplicity to the menu, and it’s reassuring that supplies of meet and veg

come from Mogford’s own Oxfordshire farm. If I was to get picky, I’m not sure that

deep-fried soft shell crab (supplied frozen from Indonesia) sits well on a menu that

takes pride in local and seasonal products.

On my first visit to the new Gees I was accompanied by Madhur Jaffrey, the acclaimed

food writer and broadcaster. If this put any added pressure on the kitchen brigade or

waiting staff it certainly didn’t show. In addition to the flawless service, highlights

included my queen scallops, Madhur’s Iberico ham and, undoubtedly, the prune ice

cream with pedro ximenez sherry. The only low-point was our freshly baked bread,

which was rather heavy and had a dense consistency, possibly a result of the dough

being too dry.

Later in the same week I returned, this time to host the annual Oxford Gastronomica

Dinner, part of the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival. Designed by Michelin-starred

chef Atul Kochhar, the menu must have been out of the chefs’ comfort zone, but its

perfect execution displayed their versatility and skill. And the setting – well in the

evening it is truly magical. Rarely have I been to an event that has stimulated such

positive comment. Of course, great company, much wine and (I didn’t dream this) Patti

Boulaye giving a rendition of ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, all helped – but the warmth

of the welcome from the team at Gees was perhaps the most important ingredient.

"I am keen that Gatineau patisserie should always reflect my drive for qualityand flair. While keeping one eye on the latest European trends in patisserie, myaim is to introduce new and exciting creations into our product range - in orderto thrill and delight our customers."

As a resident of Oxfordshire, there’s every chance you will have visited Summertown. There’s every chance you will have walked past the shops, but there’s every chanceyou haven’t discovered Gatineau. Put it on the top of your list. This is a delight nobodyshould miss.

With hand crafted delicacies including macarons, croissants, quiches and the mostelegant cakes for that special occasion, not only can you experience unbelievable tastes, you can also feel the industry behind every creation with every mouthful. From nowon the mid morning self indulgence will never have tasted so good!

In Oxford Magazine found out more about the brains behind Gatineau, HERVÉGATINEAU.

“I set up this business six years ago. Having trained in France for a few years, Icompleted my training at Maison Blanc from 1997 and then heard that this unit, aformer patisserie itself, was becoming free.

“Maison Blanc was a different proposition to what we have here, but I learnedeverything I know about production. But here at Gatineau we have time to focus onone shop and I like to think there is more detail and a sense of artisan in everythingwe make here. The team (of just six) is also a lot smaller and so we all have to makean impression on everything we do.”

Gatineau have their fantastic signature items but try to bring out some seasonalspecials, as HERVÉ explains. “We do have a few key products that stay, but a lot changeschange due to the season – we want our clients to be excited and reinvigorated by ournew creations. We have Easter, Christmas, Mother’s Day, but then also of course we dospecial occasions like wedding cakes, French traditional wedding cakes and so on.”

With a thriving wholesale business including clients such as Gee’s, The Old Parsonage,Quod, The Grand Café and Java, it’s not just the queues in Summertown that HERVÉand his team have to satisfy, which brings with it its own pressures. “The premises arechallenging to say the least and we would like to move so we can expand morenaturally, but for now we are working well and the business is growing.”

So for a taste of fresh perfection, pop in to Gatineau – the team are there from 4.30ambut you can pop in at 7am! Magnifique!

We had a pre concert booking for Browns at 5pm on a Wednesday evening inMay, earlier than usual for dinner but it was nice to sit down and relax withouttime pressure.

When I arrived, the girls (my wife and 12 year old daughter, Abi) were already seated, tucking into bread, olives and oils, seated in the window. I was greeted by the engagingAhara, who was to be the star of the show. I ordered a Peroni, a veritable Olympic torchof a drink! It certainly quenched my thirst! Browns was just starting to fill up, withcouples and large groups out for a night enjoying the lighter evenings – it’s just as busyon a Thursday for Lobster Thursday.

Ahara took our food order and we were soon tucking into scallops, prawn cocktail andpate. Whilst Tina chose a glass of house champagne to accompany her starter, I had aglass of beautifully chilled and wonderfully dry Chablis. For the main course, both of thegirls were tempted by the succulent burgers which the table alongside had takendelivery of early in our visit – they did look good! I went for the fish and chips whichwere exquisite! Moist, plump and incredibly tasty, my tempura battered cod loin steak, with crushed minted peas, tartare sauce and Browns chunky chips and house ketchupwas scrumptious.

Presentation of the food at Browns was certainly impressive. My cod was accompaniedby a tricolour of sauces, as previously referred to, and the burgers were certainly‘plumped up’ as burgers should be.

I have already alluded to the excellent service, but must throw Ahara into the spotlight.Diligent, professional and attentive, we couldn’t have asked for more. If there is a recordfor picking up AND replacing a customer’s knife when they clumsily drop it on the floor(yes, me!), then Ahara should hold the title – I reckon she took a flat three secondsfrom the knife hitting the floor!

Although the deserts looked more than enticing, we were all full. Tina had a latte whilstAbi had a baby cappuccino and I polished off the last of my glorious Chablis.

A solid 8 ½ out of 10 for Browns – great food, first class food and a great atmosphere. This was just the right aperitif to a wonderful concert.

Next time you’re in Oxford, try Browns for breakfast, lunch, tea or dinner, or why notjust pop in for a drink, a refreshing cocktail perhaps.

Impeccable from Browns.
