NEWS in association with

All 12 cyclists, including B4’s Richard Rosser, Keith Simpson, Rob Scotcher andJohn Kennedy, enjoyed a fantastic experience they will never forget. B4 werefantastically supported by Kieran Lynch of Oxford Event Hire, James 'The CandyMan' White of InTouch CRM, David 'Hill Master' Robertson of Buildbase togetherwith his wife, Jane ‘Legend’ Robertson, Wayne Harris of Ibstock, Nigel Pursall ofOrangeStripe Telecommunications with his nephew Dan and mutual friend StevieArcher.

The group arrived in Paris on Friday 1st June by Eurostar following months of trainingwhich for some was totally alien. Others, like Dave Robertson, had previously completedthe route from London to Paris but, by his own admission, this was a far more rewardingexperience. “I did a very similar challenge last year but I must say I enjoyed this trip alot more. From the organisation side it could not have run smoother. Then the TEAMmates – It was amazing how quickly twelve people can come to terms with thechallenge and start to work as a unit to ensure we all achieved – It was great to be apart of it.”

The group set off early on Saturday morning, guided by the fantastic Martin and Joefrom Passion in Events who organised the event with B4. Nikki and Simon were thesupport team and Zoe was the team photographer, quickly amassing a library of photos, mainly of various members of the team struggling to make it up the tortuous hills!

First stop was Evreux, 75 miles from Paris, which the team reached with two hours tospare. After an evening meal it was early tobed before Day Two’s colossal 90 milesto Caen from where the team took tothe overnight ferry to Portsmouth. Beforeboarding, the group had a fantastic mealand the opportunity to reflect on two greatdays and 165 miles covered. For many it wasthe first time they had cycled long distanceson consecutive days, but without any realaches and pains, it was testament to thehours of training they had all put in thatthere were no major problems ahead ofthe last day. As the cyclists set off to boardthe ferry, although there was an air ofsatisfaction, most realised the last daywould be the hardest, with the 100 mile trekfrom Portsmouth to Blenheim Palace aheadof them, with heavy rain forecast.

Good weather had been a major plus for the trip, with only light showers on day twoto contend with. However, as the group assembled below deck at 6.30am on the finalday, the weather, on what was supposed to be a glorious Jubilee Monday, was anything

but welcoming. Before the group had got into their stride, they were confronted witha 100 metre climb out of Portsmouth, an early reminder that this was going to be thetoughest day. Breakfast was provided on the roadside shortly after, with the everpresent Simon and Nikki ready with a warm smile and the largest bacon sandwiches!

From there on the signs became morefamiliar with Basingstoke, then Newbury, then Wantage passing by. As the teamclimbed the final 200 metre plus hill,Oxfordshire was before them and the sunbegan to shine. Tea was served in Eatonand as the team made its way throughWolvercote, team jester, James White, succumbed to his first and well deserveddrink for over a month just outsideWoodstock as there was an hour to killwhilst friends and family were still arrivingto greet the group at Blenheim. The finalmile brought home to the cyclists what theyhad achieved and it was with relief and alittle sadness that the final mile slippedby and Jane lead the team through theHensington Gates up the drive to BlenheimPalace, a wonderful venue for the climax tothis fantastic adventure.

Over one hundred friends and family had gathered to cheer the group home, alongwith supporters from Oxfam, B4’s preferred charity. The total raised so far for Oxfamis £11,000 with more money to come in. Oxfam’s Oxfordshire Development Manager,Anna Thorne, commented, “£10,000 is enough to build two water tanks and refurbishtwo classrooms which is an amazing achievement, The team did a great job!

Two stalwarts of the Oxford theatre scene have teamed up to present a summerof open-air Shakespeare in stunning settings. Enjoying open-air theatre is anessential part of any summer’s day in Oxford and a tradition amongst residents.

Creation Theatre Company will perform Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice on theRooftop Amphitheatre at Saϊd Business School (next to the train station), while OxfordShakespeare Company will return to the gardens of Wadham College with AMidsummer Night’s Dream. Creation has been producing Shakespeare’s greatest worksin Oxford for 16 years, delighting audiences in venues from Oxford Castle toHeadington Hill Park. Oxford Shakespeare Company marks its 10th anniversary with amagical new production in the stunning gardens of Wadham College. Both shows arelocated in the heart of Oxford, easily reached on foot from the centre.

Creation’s The Merchant of Venice will take audiences on a voyage to 1930s Italywith live jazz, vintage costume and of course the infamous ‘pound of flesh’. DirectorNatalie Abrahami (Regent’s Park, Headlong, Young Vic) places Shakespeare’s mostcontroversial and human comedy amid the hustle and bustle of the docks, wherecultures collide, money talks and debt is cheap… until it’s time to pay. ‘Time Out’described Natalie Abrahami’s Pericles for Regent’s Park as “A cheeky, magical andmoving adaptation, FOUR STARS”. Performed by a troupe of nine actors and musicians, this production will include live music and songs.

Creation’s venue, the Amphitheatre at Saïd, is perched above Oxford’s dreaming spires, perfectly placed under balmy skies and starry nights, and also boasts an “indoor backup” inside the building, so even if the weather doesn’t live up to expectations, theexperience will.

Oxford Shakespeare Company’s Dream will take place in the imagined world of a groupof University undergraduates as they are forced to find themselves and fight for love,as well as survive a night in the ‘wilderness’. Hormones are raging, lovers are arguing, fairies are fighting and Oberon still can’t find his Zen. A superb acting ensemble willperform Shakespeare’s favourite comedy with trade mark original compositions byrising stars Nicholas Lloyd-Webber and James D. Reid (Twelfth Night & The TempestTime Out’s Critic’s Choice, FOUR STARS).

Oxford Shakespeare Company’s venue, the gardens of Wadham College on Parks Road,is the ideal setting for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There is also the opportunity towatch A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Cornbury Park Charlbury - regarded as one ofthe most stunning private estates in Oxfordshire – on Sunday 1 July at 2.30pm.

Both shows open in July and run throughout the summer, with performances onweekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, including some matinees. The fullperformance schedules can be found at www.creationtheatre.co.uk andwww.osctheatre.org.uk. Tickets are priced £10-23.

Tickets for both shows are available from the Creation Theatre Company Box Office on01865 766266 or online at www.creationtheatre.co.uk

Situated on the peaceful Turl Street in Oxford City Centre, as one might guessfrom the name, is Turl Street Kitchen: A dining establishment with a difference. The Turl Street Kitchen's focus on supporting the local environment andcommunity flows throughout the entire building, from the locally sourced andseasonal ingredients in the kitchen, to the charity gathering point upstairs.

On the first floor of Turl Street Kitchen lies The Oxford Hub. The Hub is a social focalpoint for charitable activity, linking students with their community through socialaction and volunteering. The Hub's meeting rooms, offices, event space, living roomand library are available freely to charity groups, to hire for students and also for nonstudents on a mission to help their community.

Back down on the ground floor, we were seated immediately in the grand rustic diningroom. The whole area being decorated with a pale, farmhouse look in white and olivegreen lends to a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. The quiet bustle of the open kitchenin the distance, the high Victorian ceilings with contemporary low-hanging lamps, tothe stunning origami artwork by Lisa Curtis – The Turl Street Kitchen is unique in notonly its kind-hearted vocation.

After presentation with a thin slip of paper for a menu, the staff explained that becauseof the focus on local ingredients, the menu changes twice daily depending on what’savailable. Menus are available on their website or twitter shortly before mealtimes.Out of today's options, all of which sounded delectable, I opted for a starter ofasparagus soup with freshly baked bread, and a Burford cheese & onion quiche for themain course. When they write 'freshly baked', they really do mean it. I smelt it beforeit even arrived from the kitchen. The generous helping of soup was perfect – theasparagus was creamy and rich, without being over-powering or too filling as can easilyhappen with soup for starters. The cheese & onion quiche was hands-down the tastiestquiche I've ever had the pleasure of eating. It was a taste explosion of smoky Burfordcheese with fresh onions in a light and soft pastry. The food here really cannot befaulted in any aspect.

In terms of drinks, Turl Street Kitchen offers a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages – from rose lemonade and independent colas to fresh juices and awell chosen selection of wines. As with the food, the drinks focus on independent andBritish producers, such as the local Cotswold lagers. And as for desserts – you need toask a waiter for that day's list – I chose fresh English strawberries and cream, while myfriend went for a home-baked doughnut with custard filling and a pot of blueberrycompote. Both desserts were, again, faultless. And because the food had been so freshand nutritious we weren't left close to bursting by the end of it, rather perfectly sated.

The bar stays open until midnight weekdays and past 1am on Fridays and Saturdaysand can become quite lively on busy nights. They also play host to regular live musicevents and more. Turl Street Kitchen really is bringing something new to Oxford's diningscene, and cannot be recommended enough. The kitchen opens at 5.30pm, and whenwe arrived at 6.30pm the dining area had but a few people in it. By 7pm it was fillingup quite a bit though so I do suggest going a little earlier. Even so, the waiting staff wereattentive, friendly, and very helpful all evening. I will undoubtedly be returning theresoon.

Located perfectly in amongst the hustle and bustle of Cowley Road, Rice Box is

the place to go to if you want quick service, delicious food and a welcoming smile.

We tried Rice Box on a very rainy day and were delighted to find such a welcome

retreat from the weather.

Rice Box has a wide selection of dishes, including Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese and

Thai. But it doesn’t end there: they also have a Specials menu, Chef’s Specials, and

Seasonal Specials next to the normal menu (which is already big and also includes lots

of Vegetarian options).

At Rice Box, there is definitely a dish for everyone! The wide choice made deciding a

bit difficult, but I enjoyed the process. All tastes seem to be catered for with dishes you

wouldn’t usually find in most Chinese Restaurants.

Aria, our waitress, provided perfectly friendly and quick service and food seemed to fly

out of the kitchen. The speed from ordering to receiving your food was super fast, you’d

be wrong for thinking this may impact on the quality of the dishes served. Everything

had such a great smell and was visually very appealing. How the team of chefs coped

with a packed restaurant is nothing short of a miracle.

We had Special fried rice, House Special Chow Mein, Roast Duck With Cashew Nuts,

Spring Rolls and two Cokes; all of which were just perfect. The location of the Rice Box

is ideal if you are looking for somewhere to eat whilst shopping on Cowley Road and

is a short walk from the centre of town. Steven and I were eating just before going to

see a gig later that evening.

Rice Box is really good value for money, with healthy and delicious food served seven

days a week (including bank holidays) from 12 noon to 12 midnight. You can enjoy the

food at the restaurant, as a takeaway or home delivery. If it has to be a super fast

takeaway, try one of the box meals – they even come with a free soft drink!

After our meal, we were well prepared for a good evening out and, the weather aside,

our Rice Box experience was great, everything you would want from a local Chinese.
