AugustWelcome to August in Oxford

The end of July brought a heat wave to the UK, and at the time of writing this I’m sincerelyhoping it will continue on through August! After such a long and cold Winter, we all deservesome sunshine.

With the warm weather we have seen some stunning outdoor performances from the likes ofTomahawk and the Oxford Shakespeare Company, and this continues in August with the OxfordUniversity Dramatic Society’s rendition of A Comedy of Errors at the Bodleian Library quarterwhich looks to be a brilliant and quirky performance.

If you have relatives or friends coming to see you during the Summer (I’m assuming ‘Summer’will equal only the month of August) we’ve once again got some great suggestions inside thisissue for accommodation, activities, and dining such as the luxurious 5-star Macdonald RandolphHotel, the beautiful Waterperry Gardens, and fine dining at Cockadoo with an impressive Adeletribute singer.

Don’t let the Summer in Oxford go to waste!

We’d fortunately booked our stay at Oxford’s only five star hotel on the eve ofGood Friday, more by luck than judgement, so knew we could fully relax as Tinaenjoyed a facial in the basement spa and I caught up on a few e-mails with a glassof champagne, courtesy of the hotel’s management.

The room was magnificent. As far as suites go, this was first class yet still incrediblyhomely. Overlooking Oxford, I soon had the windows open to enjoy the fresh breezeof an unusually balmy March evening, considering the weather’s penchant for belowzero temperatures so far this year. The lounge area was beautifully furnished, withsumptuous pieces underlining the hotel’s five star status. The bedroom was generousin size with a gargantuan bed. The bathroom was impressively finished and more thanlarge enough for two to meander in and out.

Tina returned from her facial full of compliments for the knowledgeable staff who hadinstantly relaxed her so she could enjoy the Decléor treatment to the full. She furtherrelaxed with a glass of champagne prior to freshening up for dinner. ‘No hair brush’exclaimed Tina. ‘I don’t need one.’ I replied, being rather folically challenged, soonrealising that Tina needed the brush, not I. Fortunately, Boots were open late on aThursday and I returned with the required brush, and we were on our way to dinner.

The Restaurant at The Randolph, a double AA Rosette winner, is striking. High ceilings, coats of arms adoring the walls, crisp white tablecloths and attentive staff. Therestaurant was just about full as we entered just after 8pm. We were soon served withan aperitif, fresh bread and a menu brimming with mouth-watering options.

Tina chose the hand dived scallop, whilst I had the John Ross ‘award winning’ smokedsalmon, accompanied by a half bottle of Macon Villages, as Tina stayed withchampagne. For our mains, Tina plumped for the loin of venison and I went for theslow roasted pork belly. The food was superb, certainly the best meal we had enjoyedin Oxford for some time.

Dessert was beyond us so we retired to the room and enjoyed our night’s sleep. Wewere both deep in slumber when a knock at the door woke us for breakfast in the room.More smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, fresh orange juice, pastries and tea – whata marvellous start to the day. It was most certainly a Good Friday.

The Randolph is an institution. Perfectly placed, bang smack in the heart of Oxford, it’sdifficult to want for anything. With thanks to Michael Grange and his excellent staff fora first class experience.

Not only were we about to go review the latest ‘buzz’ around town, but it was also

a beautiful, warm day in sunny Abingdon. As a local to Abingdon I’ve seen The

Broad Face exchange hands a few times so was excited to see what the new

owners had done with the place.

Stepping in through the door we were greeted by the cheery staff and shown to our

seats. It was clear to see The Broad Face had been given some tlc, the restaurant looked

great with rustic furniture and décor throughout. We settled in straight away and

moved on to the fantastic selection on the menu.

With our orders taken we were served bread and some beautifully presented Gazpacho

to cool us down. This made us anticipate our mains even more! While chatting with my

partner all of a sudden her face lit up at what was coming to our table from behind me.

Zoe had ordered the most amazing Fish and Chips we’d ever seen, and if you know

Zoe you will know she’s quite a connoisseur of this British Classic. It’s easy to see The

Broad Face believe presentation is key as my Carbonara looked incredible and, I kid you

not, better than any Carbonara I’ve ever had in Italy. In every bite you could taste the

freshness of the ingredients, the love and care that is taken with every dish really shines

through.

We sat defeated and we couldn’t have taken another bite. That was until our desert was

placed on the table. We were presented with a creative Dark Belgian chocolate fondant

that just screamed to be eaten. It was a real pleasure for Zoe to sink her spoon into the

desert commenting on the love of warm gooey chocolate and silky smooth cold ice

cream. The orange espuma really complemented the desert well.

After lunch we got the chance to meet Dan and Bogdan Sminticiuc, the enthusiastic

brothers that have taken The Broad Face and turned it into something rather special.

You can tell they are excited for the future in the way they talk about their restaurant

and being glad to be a part of Abingdon.

As we left, Zoe and I both agreed that we had just experienced something quite special

and with so many great choices on the menu, we will be back very soon.

Just outside Dorchester-on-Thames, on the road to Abingdon, is The Chequers, apub that you could quite easily miss. Don’t. The modest exterior hides a trulymemorable pub dining experience. It is very difficult to strike the right balancebetween a pub where the locals can drop in for a pint, and a pub that needs, forits very existence, to provide good food at affordable prices. Throw in a veryrelaxed and convivial ambience and you have a winning combination.

And what food! On his menu Chef Steven Sanderson has constructed a perfect balancebetween ‘pub classics’ (fishcakes, burgers, fish and chips) and high quality ‘mains’, albeitmainly meat-based. Critically, though, the whole menu is based on eclectically sourcedingredients – seafood from Devon, Cornwall, Norfolk, Scotland and Jersey; beef andvenison from the West Country; Oxfordshire lamb, chicken and pork.

On arrival we ordered drinks at the bar and then sat on comfortable sofas in front ofan enormous fireplace to study the menu at leisure. When our order was ready wewere shown to a table that could seat four, presumably because the pub was notcompletely full, though none of the tables are close to each other, which gave us bothprivacy and comfort. A complimentary bottle of water was already on the table - a nicetouch. Place settings were attractive. To start with, we had Duck Salad and Wye ValleyAsparagus. Both were full of flavour and very nicely presented. Pink ginger and corianderin the duck salad transformed what could have been an ordinary plate into amemorable one. The asparagus’ flavour was complemented with goat’s cheese and aslice or two of Parma ham, tastes that softly complemented each other. For the maincourse we chose Fillet of Pork, which came in a cider reduction with black pudding, sweet and sour apples, and a mustard mash, and Wild Mushroom Pancakes, againcleverly combined with the subtlety of a blue cheese crème. Pork is so easy to overcookand dry out – not here, mouth-wateringly moist yet firm and bursting with flavour.Throughout our meal the service was impeccable – knowledgeable, friendly, discreteand attentive. Not what one normally gets in a pub!

The dessert menu is a tour de force - we had the chocolate brownie and could find nofault (we were sorely tempted to try the Strawberry Eton Mess and the Sticky ToffeePudding but showed commendable restraint). The menu is accompanied by dessertwine suggestions, which is a nice, thoughtful touch. Which brings me to the wine list- I doubt many pubs have a wine list which includes Chateau Laffite or Chateau HautBrion! - but apart from these monstrously expensive and brilliant wines there is alsoan excellent range of modestly priced vintages from other wineries all over the world(many family-owned). We settled for Portuguese wine from the Douro (very few pubsunderstand just how good Portuguese wine can be).

The Chequers really is impressively good.
