Welcome to Hope Church Ipswich. We believe that church is about God and His people. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to join us as we celebrate and share God’s love. Whether you are with us for the first time or have been coming for a few weeks, it’s great to have you with us.

Who We Are. Hope Church is a group of ordinary people of every age and many different backgrounds. Some have only recently started seeking Jesus while others have been Christians for many years. While still remaining diverse we do have some significant things in common:

• We have found the person of Jesus to be the answer to our deepest needs.• We have become committed both to him and to one another.• We love the Bible and God’s presence and look to experience both whenever we meet on Sundays and in Small Groups during the week.

We are part of Newfrontiers, a growing family of 600 churches on five continents. We are also a member of the Evangelical Alliance UK.

Where We Are Going. We want to build a significant church that demonstrates and declares the certain hope that can be found in Jesus (hence the name), that loves one another and serves the Waterfront community and Ipswich. We are on a big adventure together where ‘every life counts’ and everyone is involved.

September is the month of the University Freshers Week with thousands of students returning or starting new courses. September often marks the start of something new for many. A new term after the holidays; a new job, new church or a new home. As Christians we are made totally brand-new people with a new start and a new eternal home. EVERY day is a new adventure with God’s grace and love. So we want to welcome you, whatever it is that’s new in your life to this month’s edition of our magazine - packed with stories of the new Hope we have in God! Pass it around!

InvolveInvolveWe all want Hope to be the friendliest and most welcoming church it can be, for

everyone who visits to feel loved and part of what we do and for people to be inspired to join us in building a God-glorifying church in Ipswich.

Viisit the Welcome Area on Sundays to do things like:

- sign up for the next Welcome Lunch- find out about Alpha, Tots, Kidz Klub, Oasis, Football or any of our regular ministries- find your nearest Small Group- get an introduction to someone in the church- buy a recommended book- find out what’s going on

WELCOME AREA Let’s all be involved...

A warm welcome awaits you at our students’ very own cell group. Running on a Wednesday evening throughout term-time we share a hot meal together followed by times of teaching, bible study, worship and prayer. There are also lots of social events throughout the year to watch out for. We previously ran a very successful student alpha and plan to run this again. There is a free student meal on offer most Sundays at various houses, which is a great opportunity to get to know people in the church.

It all kicks off with a freshers’ service on the 30th Sept. Dont miss it!HopeChurch

as we learn about our awesome God, our

Sunday group meets downstairs; we go

down just before the sermon and finish

around 12:15. In this time we do a bible

study, currently following our series on the

foundations of Christianity. Once a month

we also do a ‘Grill a Christian’ in which a

member of the church comes down with

us to be grilled by our young people. (Those

aged 15-16 are not required to come down

but may if they would like) Speak to Shaun

and Megan Clarke for more details.

At various places in Ipswichon Tuesdays we meet to do topical bible studies, have fellowship time, play games and do social events. We also have monthly praise and prayer events where we worship God and pray for each other and the town. We sometimes split the group into years 7-9 and years 10-13 to do more age appropriate studies and activities. Please speak to Jon and Hannah Alston for more details.

to everyone in the church who helped us raise money, supported us with prayer, lent equipment, cooked our delicious food and gave

your time. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Discipleship - God’s Word & Spirit in Action to the Ends of the Earth

The Book of Acts explodes with God’s plan to spread the Good News about Jesus from Jerusalem to the Ends of the Earth. Acts is a treasure! Action-packed, deep in theology and a challenge to us as we continue the God-given mission of making disciples. The Holy Spirit compels the church onward, using people who have committed their ways to Jesus Christ: an intentional body of believers and motivated, obedient individuals. In this series we will let Peter, Paul, Barnabas, Dorcas and many others be our role models.

Celebrating together with our friends from Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds as a cluster of churches in the Newfrontiers family. Our guest speaker is Angela Kemm, who spent twenty years building relationships in the Townships of Cape Town, resisting Apartheid, fighting for proper housing for people in shacks, leading many people to God and starting two church plants from scratch. She is passionate to see the church do social action, signs and wonders, evangelism and justice as one package. Angela is married to Greg and they have three married daughters.

SPRING is a voluntary organisation offering peer support for adults in Suffolk who are affected by anxiety. SPRING is run by people who are, or have been, affected by anxiety. If you have anxiety you can feel very alone. You are not. Estimates show that about 1 in 10 people can be affected by anxiety. Joining a peer support group can be very helpful for gaining support, reducing isolation and nurturing growth in yourself and in others. SPRING Peer Support Groups: Together we learn about living with anxiety and managing it more effectively. This does improve the quality of our life. We are all at different stages in our living with or learning about anxiety. There are no ‘experts’. This is NOT group counselling. Everyone is equal, a peer.

Tuesday evenings, fortnightly, starting 11th September at The Orwell Centre. For more information on how to join this group there are postcards available in church or contact us on: [email protected] 07583 22 77 85 www.spring.onesuffolk.net or ask Jacqui Wilkinson or Judi Jay for more information.

Town Pastorsat Latitude Festivalwith Steve Jay

Many people have now heard of Town Pastors: Christians who give up their time to look after people out clubbing on a Friday and Saturday night. Maggie Jardine and Paul Goldring from Hope Church are just two of 250 Town Pastors from nine towns across Suffolk. In July over 40 Town Pastors gave up their time to become Festival Pastors for the second year running. One of the Pastors, Emma, explains “Latitude is a music and arts festival held over 4 days at the Henham Estate near Southwold. There were over 35,000 attending. Patrolling a venue the size of a small town is challenging enough but when you add

in thick mud it adds a whole new dimension!”

As well as having a refreshment tent and prayer tent, giving away our ‘Latitude Baart the Sheep’ mugs, key-rings, sweets, wristbands and badges with messages of personal safety and helping a few people put up tents, the Pastors were able to have some fantastic conversations with people, explaining what we do and why we felt it was so important.

Steve Jay, Town Pastors Festival co-ordinator adds “A girl arrived at the prayer tent in tears and bare feet, her money and wellies stolen and fallen out with her friends. She wanted to leave early but didn’t

know how. We prayed for her and miraculously obtained a FREE pair of pink wellies from a kind stall-holder and a pair of Town Pastors escorted her through the mud to get the shuttle bus to the train station. Her comment was that she will look for Christians like us in her home city!”

It's very easy to make judgements about what Christians are like and we definitely broke down a few prejudices by showing God's love to people. Our vision is to see Festival Pastors in every major event in the UK in the years ahead.

Hope Radio Ipswich is an internet radio station launched in June 2012 playing great worship music and great mainstream music side by side!

Sounds a bit icky? Well surprisingly it totally works!

Graham Turrell, the founder and creator of this radio station has done it!Since receiving personal recommendations on facebook, (http://www.facebook.com/#!/HopeRadioIpswich) listening numbers have shot up. The deal is that Hope Radio Ipswich must average a certain amount of ‘hours listened to’ a month, otherwise the whole thing will be deleted - so get listening people! You’ll think you’re just being supportive to begin with and then you’ll discover what some of us have already discovered - it’s good!

Graham has sought and been granted permission from several sources to also broadcast preaches and seminars. You’ll be able to hear Hope Church preaches, material direct from Terry Virgo’s own website and bible readings excellently wrapped in great music full stop!

Graham, with help from Shaun and Megan Clarke, has plumbed the youth at Hope, to gather information about the music they’d like to hear being played and you are being invited to do the same!

Please contact Graham at [email protected] to get your best music heard!

It’s early days for this fledgling radio station. Graham has plans to develop it to include Thoughts from Time to Time(!), Requests, New Artists and for it to even to be used as a platform to introduce new worship music that we’ll find ourselves singing week by week. Can we also slip in a thank you to those who have plugged it, have listened to it, are still listening to it and who are going to give it a try! Thank you! Becky Turrell

On Friday 9th June wind cancelled the Suffolk Show but didn’t stop our intrepid 18-30's (plus 17s) going on their inaugural weekend away to Great Wenham.

The windswept wigwams were ditched in favour of five comfortable cabins, which everyone squeezed into and soon Louis and Emma’s chariot of food arrived to a resounding cheer.

The weekend was jam-packed full of worship, seminars (Gifts of the Holy Spirit, Prayer, Unpacking your Bible and Evangelism) and focused on God’s grace looking specifically at Romans 5 & 6 with Louis, Jon and Hannah Alston speaking. Good times of fellowship were enjoyed and an abundant mountain of cake. Special thanks to Justin and Nicki Smith, Steve Jay, Rob Wright, Maurice Nightingale and Len South who visited on Saturday and led seminars.

Best bits: Sunday morning worship outside – enjoying God’s creation; Hope’s Got Talent on the Saturday evening; Josh Nightingale’s song winning the individual performance; and Emma’s group wowing us with the parable of the banana plantation (a creative interpretation of Matthew 20:1-16).

The fruits and seeds that God grew in the weekend will continue to grow and we look forward to more next year – but without the gale force winds! Lucy Vines

I came to Ipswich from Wales via clearing to study at UCS. Growing up in a non-Christian family I didn’t have any experience of church life. Life was going well and I didn’t think I needed any help from God. During student life I met a lot of Christians who encouraged me to come to Hope Church. Attending church for the first time was a very daunting experience but people there made me feel very welcome and the following week I decided to return. From then on I attended church regularly and soon became involved in a weekly small group for students and enjoyed going along to the student lunches. This turned out to be a great way to meet other students and learn more about Christianity.

A few weeks passed before I felt an urge to privately pray to Jesus; I was expecting fireworks or a big change in me straight away but God showed me His love in a quieter gentle way, meeting me in my heart and changing me slowly through His love. I attended the 18-30s weekend away in June where someone shared a picture from God that really touched my heart. That was when I knew He was talking and responding to me.

As well as changing my heart God has also been changing my circumstances. After completing my studies at UCS I was unsure of my future and applied for jobs both in Ipswich and closer to home. I prayed for guidance as to where my future would lead me and friends at Hope prayed for me to be offered the job in Ipswich; Some of these people I had only just met. I was humbled and grateful for the prayers and support shown. I am pleased to say I was offered a permanent job at Ipswich Hospital. I have settled in well to both my job and life in Ipswich and know that this is where God intends me to be.

Specially for students with guest speaker Stef Liston. Stef leads Revelation Church in London and is a gifted and passionate teacher, communicating the gospel with zeal to this generation.

Students from Suffolk New College and UCS will be invited to join the Hope Church family for excellent worship, challenging preaching and lots of fun. It will also be an opportunity to find out more about what is happening at Hope for students at college, sixth form and university. This will be an important event for the church as we have the opportunity to give all new students a great welcome as we pray they will make their home among us. A Sunday not to be missed!

Hope Overf lowing

In a children’s playground you will sometimes see a roundabout being spun faster and faster by an enthusiastic parent as their screaming children cling to the bars, desperate not to be flung into orbit by the increasing centrifugal forces. It’s scary for the children, but it’s also huge fun. Zechariah prophesies that a time will come when God’s house will overflow with prosperity (Zech 1: 17) and the word the prophet uses to describe this overflow has the same sense of an irresistible force working centrifugally. He anticipates a time when God’s church will be like a powerful fountain of water which will overflow to bring refreshment to whole communities, regions and even nations. Many of us are noticing that Hope Church Ipswich is beginning to surge afresh with spiritual life and hope, and it is inevitable that this life will begin to overflow powerfully to refresh and impact the world around us.

What will such an overflow look like? It is the overflow of lives lived out in the holy fear of God in our households, our workplaces, our colleges and neighbourhoods; lives lived in reverence to God that will bring spiritual refreshment wherever we live, to the unreached districts of Ipswich, to the surrounding rural villages and market towns, the urban centres and the great cities of the world, wherever God will lead us.

This overflow will also look like multiplied New Testament-style church communities, small groups and clusters of small groups, churches and clusters of churches, full of mature Biblical health and vibrant Holy Spirit life, and having a decisive missional impact wherever these are established, contributing to the re-evangelisation of whole communities, regions and even nations for the glory of Jesus Christ. We pray also that this will be accompanied by a multiplication of leadership and ministry, worship leaders, children and youth workers, ministers to the poor, and much more, that will be thrust out from Ipswich to help strengthen existing churches and plant fresh churches in the regions beyond. In the coming weeks there are a number of opportunities for you to be part of the overflow of hope from our church. Firstly, very soon we will be officially launching our new church plant to Stowmarket - the original date has been changed, so watch this space, but it would be such a privilege to join with our friends at Bury St Edmunds as we pray for the fresh church plant in Stowmarket led by John Putman.

Secondly, we have a Suffolk Cluster Celebration on Sun 7 Oct again with our friends from Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, with Angela Kemm speaking. We are also hoping our friends from Zimbabwe Church of Christ

the King will be joining us again - who can forget their visit last Easter!

Finally can I direct your attention to the annual Heaven Touches East conference hosted by Lowestoft Community Church, Thu 11 to Sat 13 Oct 12, with Mark Stibbe and Julian Adams as the main speakers.

Bill Johnson says, “The message of the Father’s love has burned in Mark Stibbe’s heart for years. This is one of the most important and profound messages of our day, and is sure to be a central part of what God uses to bring healing to the body of Christ.” Clearly not an event to be missed! Come on, it’s time for hope to overflow - it’s going to be scary, but it’s also going to be huge fun!
