Our Year 10 Photography students have been enjoying workshops held by the Impressions Gallery, Bradford. The team who came into school to install the enormous Red Saunders artworks (which can be viewed around school) have led the workshops . The workshops used the idea of tableaux, as created by Red Saunders. The photographic tableaux depict notable historic events and recreate scenes which took place before the invention of photography. The Year 10 photographers staged historical scenes and both students and staff dressed up in all sorts of costumes, from Viking to Victorian. They then posed in the scenes in front of a white background. These images will then be edited and manipulated with an end result similar to the large artworks around school. As you can see, they enjoyed themselves in front of and behind the lens!

Red Saunders is a professional photographer who combines his photographic practice with cultural, artistic, musical, and political activism. A former member of the 60's underground theatre group CAST, he made his name with nearly two decades of work for the ground breaking Sunday Times colour supplement, until he ended his association following the Wapping dispute of 1986-7. He was a founder member and activist with the Rock Against Racism campaign from 1976 onwards. An arson attack destroyed his studio and life work in 1994 and he did not return to photography until the end of the decade, turning instead film-making.

Well done to Dominic Coy (7SP) who has qualified to represent Yorkshire and Humberside in the 2014 Triathlon Inter Regional Championships at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham on Friday 22nd August. He was selected after finishing 2nd Tristar 2 boy overall in the series of 6 triathlon events held over the past couple of months. The race is run under ITU rules and will include a dive start and draft legal bike so he’ll be putting in a lot of extra swim, bike and run practice over the coming weeks to do his Yorkshire kit proud. Good luck Dom!

Congratulations to Lucy Haines (10VEB) and Lucy Jacques (10AJH) who competed in the Eldwick Gala Fell Race on Saturday 28th June. Great to see our students doing so will in community events!

IGS have traditionally done very well over long distances and this was no exception; when the boys took to the track, Cameron Reilly (8ADM) set a new personal best time of 4:52 winning the 1500m race by a comfortable margin. The girls did well in all field events with strong performances in the high jump and long jump and took second place in the Inter Girls’ category.

To round off an excellent day for the boys, the 4x100m Inter Boys’ relay team cruised across the finish line with a solid performance, taking the maximum points to take the team into an overall lead. Despite not fielding a Junior Girls’ team, it was looking promising for an Ilkley victory with wins for the Junior and Inter Boys’ and a second place for the Girls’ team, but we were pipped to the finishing line by Bradford Grammar by 10 points.

Congratulations to 27 of our students who represented IGS in an athletics event at Horsfall Stadium, Bradford, against Rishworth and Bradford Grammar School. Due to our Year 7 and 10 girls’ team being involved in a rounders fixture it was up to the Junior Boys, Inter Boys and Inter Girls to win the points for IGS. The girls started strongly on the track, with four Year 8 girls racing up an age category, whilst the boys dominated the field events. Josh Boon (9BJS), who was making his debut for the athletics team, threw the javelin over 30 metres, claiming all 6 points to win the event. Some strong performances from the Year 7 boys were raising eyebrows in the stands about the threat they could bring to the English Schools’ competition next year including Fin Tunney (7LG) javelin, Dom Coy (7SP) 800m, Charlie Wilde (7MPC) high jump and Josh Rowland (7PDH) long jump.

Well done to Sophie Tarring (7SP) who has been awarded the prestigious ‘Headteacher’s Award’. Sophie has been awarded 40 credits above her Platinum Award...yes you read that right an additional 40 credits!

Do you use the I23, I24, I26 or catch a bus near Burley Train Station? We have had a number of calls from members of the public in the last week expressing their concern about your safety as you wait for buses in Burley. We are aware that this area attracts a lot of students and can get quite congested as you wait for your bus, but it also makes it very difficult for other pedestrians and road users to safely navigate around you. Please be aware that this is an area where buses turn in the road and lots of other vehicles use this stretch of road. We ask that keep yourself safe by keeping a good distance from the road but also that you are considerate of other members of the community and are mindful of their need to safely use the pavement and road.

Mr Milburn

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE

Year 8 Charity Challenge Year 8s have got one final push on STG points this term and aiming to securing that trip to the Lido with a fundraiser. Tutor groups have all chosen a charity to support. This includes Cancer Research, Sunshine and Smiles, WaterAid, Butoke and Westfield Hospice. To raise money a charity car wash and Market Place will take place on Tuesday 8th July, 12.15-12.45. So pop along to B Hall with your money and help support Year 8’s efforts!

Challenge and Celebration Week With just 1 week to go before you all head off on your Challenge and Celebration Weeks, please make sure you are all aware of what you need to do before the week starts. Whether it’s making sure you know what bus you should be on to lunchtime arrangements. Click on your Year booklet and make sure you know what’s what!

Thursday July 10th Strike Due to strike action school will be partially open next Thursday 10th July. Years 10 and 12 only will be in lessons but the rest of school will be closed. Buses will operate as normal. School reopens as normal on Friday 11th July.

A Little Bike Appeal Media students will be endeavouring to shoot a satirical remake of a Lady Gaga video ‘Judas’ on Monday 7th July (please don’t be alarmed if you spot some odd clothing on the day!). One section of this involves a gang of bikers; the media team would like to shoot this using children’s bicycles, in keeping with the intended humorous tone. If any of you can loan us a small-sized bicycle (anything smaller than adult size) they’d be most grateful! Please pass on details via your tutor, or directly to Mr Burrowes. You can get a better idea of the type of video that will result by looking up the Britney Spears or One Direction videos on the ‘IGSMediaStudies’ YouTube channel.

Putting the Art in Grand Depart! Has anyone seen Alice Vaughan’s (13EM) TDF inspired artwork at Lishman’s Butchers yet? It was still a work in progress last week with ‘grand’ plans to be finished in time for Saturday and she’s done it! With assistance from Lillian Baldwin (13AJK) the artwork is set to be one of the highlights in TDF inspired decorations!
