Year 11 Ball, 20.06.14

Craiglands Hotel

Goodbye Year 11 Many of you who have older brothers and sisters in the school may have seen them getting dressed up on Friday night for their Leavers’ Ball. Our Year 11s headed to the Craigland’s Hotel to celebrate their final exam and for some the end of their school career. Vintage buses, VW camper vans, limos and Hummers were just some of the vehicles delivering the students to the Craiglands. Lots of people took advantage of the fantastic weather to walk to the event and many parents made the most of the sunshine to watch their sons and daughters arrive at the ball. They partied the night away enjoying a band and disco and were impeccably behaved and beautifully turned out, including some of the highest heels ever seen! In the words of Mr Swain ‘Our Year 11 logo for the year has been ‘2014 Amazing’ and that sums up the night: they were all amazing. The students were very sociable with staff and students alike. Everyone enjoyed the evening and the opportunity to say goodbye and also thank you to many of their teachers.’

Well done to Bethan Morley (7PDH) and Ella Shouler Harris (7SL) who represented Ilkley Harrier Junior girls and whose team won at Badger Stone Relay last week.

Congratulations to Imogen Parton (8JRW) for being the first student in Year 8 to achieve their Platinum Award (160 credits this year). This is an outstanding achievement: well done Imogen.

Well done to our Year 10 boys’ tennis team who were in action on Thursday at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe, Halifax. Left to right: Jai Cant (10ACF), Dan Pelkowski (10AJH), Max Tales (10FV) and Ollie Burton (8ALC). They all competed in the AEGON tennis league fixture and won three out of four single games and both double games.

All four boys played really well and a special mention to Max and Dan for being very last minute replacements and helping the team to win their first match of the season.

Congratulations to our Year 7 cricket team who qualified for the final against The Grammar School of Leeds on Tuesday afternoon. They played fantastically well but it wasn’t to be their day. The match finished GSAL 121-7 IGS 63 .

Back row (L to R) Isaac Hutton (7LAM), Cameron Hawdon (7LG), Fin Tunney (7LG), Matthew Revis (7SP), Laurie Stephens (7SP), and Joe Wolf (7DSF). Front row (L to R) Charlei Day (7LG), Adam Haw (7PDH), Alex Bentley (7SL), Ryan Stockley (7SP), Charlie Harrison (7PDH), not in picture Freddie Smart

Well done to our Year 7 C3 groups who visited both Bradford Cathedral and the Gurdwara Temple on Tuesday as part of their study into religion. The groups were fantastically behaved and enjoyed experiencing other faiths and their places of worship.

Did you lose a purse at the recent Car Boot Sale?

If so please see your Key Stage Hub or Reception...we may have what you are looking for!

Save the date! There will be a non uniform day on Friday 11th July for all students in Years 7-10. Money raised (£1 per student) will be split between the local St John's ambulance who are kindly supporting a number of days/activities during Challenge and Celebration week and the Revival centre in Uganda which students at IGS have been supporting for some time now. 11

Your Security is our Concern! To improve security, the front doors are now closed during the day and can only be opened by using your swipe card or being buzzed in by Reception. This applies to staff, students and visitors. The following rules apply:

Students should only access the front entrance if they are entering

school after 8.30 (when the gates have been closed). You should not be attempting to enter the school building via the front entrance before that time.

If you have arrived into school after 8.30 you will need to press the buzzer to be let in. Please be civil explaining who you are to reception.

Please do not open the door for other students or visitors who are stood outside using the buzzer system. Reception can automatically open the doors after they have confirmed they have a right to be on site.

The gates at the bottom of the car park

are for vehicles only, this is not a pedestrian route. Whilst students using this as an access point has dramatically reduced, a few are still trying to use this as an entrance route. You will be challenged if you are seen using this route. Cameras are in operation in this area.

All of our gates are for security and therefore should not be wedged open or used in an unsafe manner.

Year 10 Spanish GCSE Revision Sessions Year 10 GCSE orals (worth 15% of the overall grade) are imminent, so a reminder that revision classes will be on in N7 all this week and next. We provide a supervised quiet space for students to revise, along with biscuits and juice.

Mrs Carey Fore! All students who want to attend the Anne Hindle Golf Day at Bracken Ghyll on 9th July must get a letter from the KS3 Hub and return it by next Friday.

Mr Calvert

University Tour On Tuesday the 10th of June a group of students (and Mr Wardle) went on a trip to Newcastle University for a tour around the University and to see what some of the courses were like. This involved dentistry where we carved a tooth out of wax and Design and Technology where we had to design a gadget which would be both practical and easily hidden. Harvey Broadhead Crofts

The day was part of the 'Future scholars scheme' which allows potential students in Year 9 to have a taste of what a 'Russell Group' University has to offer. The students were a pleasure to take, despite the 6.00 a.m. start, and would have been prize winners, had Emily not been convinced that it was possible to do a degree course in cow herding!

Sister Act The Musical Upstagers Youth Theatre Group are looking forward to their forthcoming production, Sister Act The Musical; they have been chosen to perform the West End and Broadway hit musical comedy at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford, one of only 35 theatre groups across the UK to be selected to produce this amazing show. Sister Act is the story of disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, a role made famous in the film by Whoopi Goldberg. When Deloris witnesses her gangster boyfriend, Curtis, and his crew murder someone they think has "squealed" to the police, she runs to the nearest Police Station to tell them what she has witnessed. She recognises Eddie, the desk chief, from school and he decides to put her into protective custody in the one place he is sure she won't be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sisterhood.

Armed Forces Day Saturday, 28 June 2014 Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to do two things. Firstly, to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, Secondly, it gives the nation an opportunity to Show Your Support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets.

Across the country people are getting involved: communities hold local events and business show their support. The National Event will be held in Stirling, but many more events will be held up and down the country in support of Armed Forces Day.

If you want to know more about the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force or meet members of local units, then why not attend an event find out what's going on in your area so that you too can celebrate Armed Forces Day in support of our nation.

Who are the Armed Forces? The UK Armed Forces defend the UK and its interests. We are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers and providing security and fighting terrorism. The current main UK military effort is in Afghanistan. We are operating there successfully, with lots of other countries, to provide a more stable and secure Afghanistan to help ensure a safer Britain and world. Your support for the Armed Forces provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families. Why not take a moment to find out what they are doing and why? Find out more about operations the UK Armed Forces are involved in around the world, or visit the official sites of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.
