Social Justice team A big thankyou to the social justice team who have been selling icy poles for project compassion this term! Please remember icy poles are sold each Wednesday for 50c. St. Patricks Day Mass On Tuesday 17th of March children from St. Johns will be attending the St. Patricks Day Mass at the St. Patricks Cathedral. The grade 4 children will be travelling by train with Mr Coburn and parent helpers. Change of Heart Day Our change of heart day will be held on Monday 16th March this year. As part of this day we will be holding a Caritas K’s kilometres for compassion event. All levels will be walking around the school walking track for approximately 1 hour in teams with a bucket of water as an action and to raise funds for caritas. This action dem-onstrates to the children how far people in impoverished countries have to walk to get clean water. All students will be given a sponsor booklet, postcards and stickers. We are hoping that students will get family members and friends to either sponsor them per lap or a set amount. Upon completion we will ask for monies to be forwarded to school, which will then be sent to Caritas to help the less fortunate. Students will also receive a certificate. More information will accompany a note that the children will receive along with their stickers and sponsor book. Altar Servers Thankyou to the current altar servers who have been doing a terrific job. We are always in need of more altar servers, so if you are in grade 4 or above and are interested in becoming an altar server please see Mr Coburn. Reconciliation Thankyou to all the parents and children who attended the Reconciliation Family Night, your participation is greatly appreciated. Please keep our Reconciliation candidates in your prayers as they prepare to receive the sacrament. Reconciliation for Grade 3 students will take place on Wednesday 25th March 2015 at 7pm. Please note the change of date. First Friday Masses We welcome all families to join us for whole school Friday Masses, which are held on the first Friday of each month.

The Transfiguration (Mk 9:2–10)

All: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Transfigure Us Lord.

Leader

Let’s go up the mountain.

Let’s go up to the place where the land meets the sky,

where the earth touches the heavens,

to the place of meeting, to the place of mists,

to the place of voices and conversations,

to the place of listening.

Reader: “This is my Son, the beloved; listen to him.” (Mark 9:7)

O God, we open our eyes and we see Jesus, the months of ministry transfigured to a beam of light, the light

of the world, your light.

All: May your light shine upon us.

Reader: We open our eyes and we see Moses and Elijah, your word restoring us, showing us the way, telling

a story, your story, his story, our story.

All: May your word speak to us.

Reader: We open our eyes and we see mist, the cloud of your presence which assures us of all we do not

know, and that we do not need to fear that.

All: Teach us to trust.

Reader: We open our eyes and we see Peter’s constructions, his

best plans, our best plans,

our missing the point, our missing the way.

All: Forgive our foolishness and sin.

Reader: We open our eyes and we see Jesus not casting us off,

but leading us down,

leading us out to ministry, to people.

All: Your love endures forever.

Reader: We open our ears and we hear your voice, “This is my

beloved Son, listen to him!”

All: And we give you thanks.

Amen.

PSG Meetings Dear Parents as you may already be aware, St John’s organises Parent Support Group meetings for students who have been identified at risk with their learning or their social and emotional development. In many other schools this is not the process and PSG meetings are only pro-vided for funded students who have received a diagnosis for their condition. At St John’s we extend this process to include over 70 children instead of the small number of funded students. To cater for the number of students on the list we employ a relief teacher to cover teachers while they attend the meetings for 3 days a term. These meetings are conducted during school hours. As you can imagined this process requires a lot of planning and ongoing costs. If you attend these meetings you are not required to attend parent teacher interviews. If you unable to attend meetings during school hours then we suggest that you request that your child is removed from this list. If you feel you still require a meeting please contact your child’s teacher. We understand that it is difficult for working parents to attend meetings during the day however we can’t keep offering this service to replace teachers when meetings are cancelled due to non attendance.

National Ride 2 School day will be celebrated at St John’s on Thursday 12th March. We are encouraging all children to ride their bike to school on that day. We will allocate extra bike parking areas on the day. Every child who rides to school on that day will receive a raffle ticket and be entered into the draw for a prize. We will be giving away 3 prizes on the day. The prize will be drawn after lunch at line up.

A year 9 class from John Paul College have been visiting Grade 1/2B over the last few weeks. We have spent time reading a range of story books and taking part in arty-crafty activities. Check out our Rainbow Fish and Very

Hungry Caterpillars outside our classroom!

ICT News

During the first term of ICT children will be learning about cybersafety. The juniors will

be focussing on the acronym THINK; T - Tell an adult if something makes you upset H - Hide your password

I - Interesting websites N - No name calling

K - Keep your personal information safe (to yourself) The link below provides extra information for parents

http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/young%20kids/online-safety/Think.aspx

The middle school will be revisiting cybersafety strategies such as “under 3” (no more

than three pieces of information that identify you). These students will also be introduced to Google Drive and the effective use of Gmail.

Cybersafety, particularly online respect for themselves and others has been a focus for the senior students. They are also developing an awareness of

their own digital footprint (which has proved very enlighten-ing!)

Thursday lunchtimes has seen the library fill with our Code Clubbers. This year we have

students from grade 3 -6 coding/programming using Hopscotch.

During term Two, we will be inviting parents/grandparents/uncles/aunties who work in the field of Computer Science to visit our Code Club children. These children were VERY

excited last year when a “real programmer” (Mrs Anderson’s husband) came in during the Hour of Code. He acquired computer hero status on his visit. The students like to

know they are learning for an authentic purpose. If you are interested in taking part,

please email . [email protected]

Please remember to return your child/ren DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ACCEPTABLE USE

AGREEMENT to the classroom as soon as possible.

Library News

Wow! What a lovely start to the year. We have been inundated with book requests from

the students and have already made many new purchases.

Last year the middle school were lucky enough to attend Frankston Cultural Centre to view ‘The 13 Storey Treehouse’. This year ‘The 26 Storey Treehouse’ is playing. Unfor-

tunately we are unable to take the children BUT would highly recommend attending.

A reminder that Frankston City Library has a Lego Club

which runs every second Wednesday at 4.00pm

Happy reading!

Our newest ‘Code Club’ members...welcome!

Dear Parents,

Seasons Group Invitation. Seasons is a peer support program for children who are experiencing grief and loss in their lives. This loss may be the result of death, separation or divorce. When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. Even though death or separa-tion appears to be only a “grown-up” problem, it does have a profound effect on the children that it touches. Because of their age and short life experience, children find it extremely difficult to verbalise those feelings. The Seasons program offers the opportunity for children to be supported to explore thoughts and feelings, ask questions, work through their grief, build a stronger self-esteem, and begin to accept what has taken place in the family. This program is facilitated in small groups and helps the children form a support group with others with similar needs. Please note that this not a clinical counselling program, rather a group where children can express themselves freely and gain insights into how loss and change might have affected their lives. We acknowledge that others can experience similar feelings and we can learn skills from each other that may support and help us. This program is not suitable for children who have experienced the death of a loved one within the past twelve months. Often children require a period of time to overcome feelings of initial shock before they are able to work through their feelings of loss. If you require support for a more recent loss it is best to seek support from a professional grief counsellor. We are more than happy to recommend services and that may be of assistance. In term 2 the Seasons program is being offered to students in years 3-6 . The program will run for 10 weeks. Each session is about 50 minutes long and will occur on Thursday afternoons. It will be facilitated by Mrs Gardiner who has had special Seasons training and we will use the lessons and books provided with this program. We aim to have children of similar ages in the group, with a maximum group size of eight. If your child (children) has experienced change or loss in their immediate or close family over the last few years and you think they might benefit from Seasons, please discuss this with them. Then fill in the form attached and return it to school by Wednesday 25th March. You will be contacted for further details and told if your child is able to participate in the Seasons group this year over the next few weeks. St. John’s is pleased to offer this important program and hope that it will be a valuable experience for those who require it. Sincerely, Paul Hartin- PRINCIPAL Lyn Gardiner – Seasons Facilitator 2015.

The option sheets you sent back are still being sorted, but someone will be in touch soon! BUNNINGS BBQ – I just wanted to send out a heartfelt thanks, to all the wonderful parents that came to help at the BBQ. Whether you chopped onions, lent us eskies, cooked sausages, worked the stall, cleaned up or came along to buy a sausage with your family, every little bit helped. The day was a great success and lots of fun, raising over $1550 for the School. So thank you! It was short notice, but we rallied to-gether and made it a great day! We would also like to sincerely thank Steve and his team at Bakers Delight in Beach Street, for their ongo-ing support and donations. EASTER RAFFLE - Easter is fast approaching! We are running an Easter raffle, which will be drawn in the last week of this term. We are asking if families would be kind enough to donate Easter eggs towards the raffle. Big or small, its completely up to you. Our aim is to have a big basket for 1st prize and lots of other smaller prizes up for grabs as well, all depending on the number of Easter Eggs donated. Raffle tick-ets will be coming home shortly, and will also be available to buy at the Twilight Sports day (Fri 13th March) and also the Working Bee (Sat 14th March) If you would like further tickets to sell, please let the PFA team know. We thank you for your support and look forward to sharing a fabulous year with you!
