Family Link DefinitionJUSTICE is respecting the rights of others and giving them what’s rightfully theirs.

Scripture ReferenceMatthew 5:6 - Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.Justice

Reflection:

“It’s not fair.” How often have you heard your child protest about the unevenness of life? With a vision that is often sharper than that of adults, children often see through to the gross injustices of our time. Perhaps that’s why Jesus recognized their primary place in the Kingdom of God. In teaching about this Kingdom, Jesus used the Beatitudes as a template for a blessed life here in this life and in the life to come. Justice predominates in God’s Kingdom. In fact, if you cut out all the references to justice, “righteousness” (another word for justice), or the poor in the Gospels, you would be left with a text full of holes. No wonder justice is one of the four cardinal virtues. It is pivotal in the way we think, feel, and behave as Catholics.

One of the most effective ways to teach children at home about justice is through modeling. When children see their parents being fair, obeying the law, and considering how their actions will affect others both in and out of the home, they more fully absorb what it means to think and act justly.

Family Activity:

Check your parish web site or bulletin for social outreach programs that can involve your family. Perhaps it is shopping for canned goods for a food bank or volunteering to make sack lunches for a homeless shelter. In addition to the activity, do some research on the causes of poverty, hunger, and homelessness. Information on this can be obtained through your local Catholic Charities office.

Prayer:

Merciful God, remind us each day to treat others fairly. Give us a hunger for justice. Make us mindful of those who are in need of compassion and kindness. May our efforts to act justly bring peace and understanding to our homes, parishes, schools, and communities. In Jesus’ sacred name, we pray. Amen.

9th Annual Nursing Home Holiday Market

Holiday Market began as an idea that Heidi Rhea, a 5th grade gifted teacher from Tchefuncte Middle School, had as her students made regular visits to Heritage Manor Nursing Home. Residents did not have the opportunity to go shopping for their family, friends, or themselves, and so she decided to bring the shopping to them. With the help of her students and fellow teachers she collected new or nearly new, inexpensive items and wrapping paper, and had a successful shopping event for the excited residents, Students assisted the residents in their wheelchairs and parents helped wrap their gifts. Even though she has retired, Heidi, has been able to not only continue this special event but expand it to three nursing homes with the help of several school service clubs and church groups.

Because each resident gets to choose about ten gifts, we need lots of donated items. None of the items should be expensive and they can be nice, clean items you already have at home. I have found some very nice things at thrift stores too. You can also buy things at the Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Walmart, etc. or donate money /gift cards for purchasing items. Some small things can be bundled together as one gift. We also need lots of gift bags which help us wrap the gifts quickly. We also need lots of people to set up, escort the residents around, help them shop, and wrap gifts. Students and families are welcome to come to any or all events. This is truly a wonderful, memorable, and heartwarming event.

YOUR OLD COATS CAN KEEP

SOMEONE WARM!!

Look into the closet. Perhaps there’s a coat your child

has outgrown, or they have decided they have a new

favorite color. All gently-used coats, jackets and

sweaters can find new homes where they will be

welcome. The Northshore-Mandeville Kiwanis Club has

begun its annual Coats for Kids Drive.

For families in our community struggling to make ends

meet, the basic necessity of a winter coat is an

expense some families cannot afford.

HELP US KEEP OTHERS WARM BY

DONATING OLD COATS/SWEATERS

*Drop donations in the box in the school office

during the month of November

*Donations will be picked up on December 7th
