6 . Do you organize cultural excursions and activities? Some study abroad programs advertise host university activities and events as their own. Our staff abroad organize special cultural events and excursions just for IFSA-Butler students. Of course, host university activities are also available to our students and are a bonus to the IFSA-Butler cultural experience.

7 . Are your excursions and activities included in the program fee? Our program fees include all of our great excursions and activities. With the exception of some optional excursions, we never ask students to pay additional money for events.

8 . Do I have to arrange my own housing? IFSA-Butler program fees always include housing, and we guarantee that each student has university housing or program housing upon arrival abroad.

9 . Do your programs include medical insurance? All IFSA-Butler programs include comprehensive accident and illness insurance at no additional cost.

10. Will I have an on-site orientation? IFSA-Butler won’t leave you out in the cold. Each program begins with an orientation in the host country. Our resident directors and other on-site staff organize and conduct the orientations themselves.

When you’re in the process of choosing a study abroad provider, be sure to ask all the right questions!

1. What is the academic quality of your programs? The universities affiliated with IFSA-Butler are top ranked in their countries, and some are among the highest ranked in the world.

2. Are all your fees listed up front? We don’t have any hidden charges. All of our fees, plus deposits and potential supplemental fees such as meal plan charges, are clearly outlined in our program fee pages on our website.

3. Do you have scholarships? IFSA-Butler has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships.

4. Do you have full-time staff in each host country? Some study abroad programs just give busy professors extra money to provide an occasional event or to organize a brief orientation. IFSA-Butler employs staff in each program country. Our staff provide everything from thorough orientations to academic guidance to emergency assistance.

5. Will I receive a real university transcript? Every student receives a Butler University transcript, with official grade and credit translations, at no additional cost. Having a U.S. university transcript will make your academic career smoother, because most U.S. universities treat the transcript as transfer credit.

A L E X A N D R I AEgypt’s second largest city and its largest seaport, Alexandria is a living showcase for Egypt’s glorious history. Until the Arab conquest, the city was home to ancient Greek, Jewish and Armenian communities. Although few descendants of these communities still remain today, the city retains a chic, Mediterranean atmosphere replete with cafés and stunning seaside views. The corniche, which lines the Mediterranean Sea, is the center of both the Alexandria University campus and the city in general. Alexandria also features numerous beaches, lively entertainment and even casinos.

C A I R OCairo is one of the world’s largest urban areas and a vast open-air museum of architectural treasures. Ancient temples, tombs, churches, the Egyptian Antiquities Museum and of course the Great Pyramid of Giza are all part of this sprawling metropolis. The city is full of life and movement nearly 24 hours a day, making it the ideal location for the adventurous student in search of a truly urban but non-traditional study abroad experience. For a taste of genuine Egyptian life, shop at a local souk (bazaar) or street market, or visit the famous Khan el-Khalili souk, which remains largely unchanged since the 14th century.

IFSA-Butler Program: Arabic Language, Alexandria University

Why did you choose Egypt for study abroad?

I absolutely love history. Egypt is so full of history, but more importantly, a history unlike any other. It spans millennia after millennia and encompasses so many facets of world history it is easily overwhelming. Egypt’s history and its diverse people are what drew me in, but the on-going revolution sealed the deal. For my senior thesis I plan to discuss the Egyptian Revolution so where better to get primary documents and conduct interviews than in Egypt? It was an easy choice and I don’t regret it for one second.

How did the IFSA-Butler help enhance your experience?

IFSA-Butler provided a great support system of local Egyptians to answer any questions and to be there for us for anything we needed. I made a great friend in a college-age local we were introduced to our very first day here. We were able to fix showers, clean the apartment, order food, call the electrician, practice our language skills and successfully conquer many hurdles thanks to this support system.

What were you scared of before going abroad?

I was afraid of missing home too much. I was afraid of what would happen with me and my boyfriend. I was afraid of not getting along with the other IFSA-Butler students. I was afraid of being by myself in a world I knew so little about, with no one to take trips with or explore with or talk with. I was afraid of a lot of things, just like anyone.

What was your favorite IFSA-Butler activity/event?

My favorite IFSA-Butler activity/ event would definitely be the Nile Cruise. We got to see so much and do so much...I wish it could have been for a full week!

What advice do you have for future Egypt students?

Don’t be afraid to use the phrases “God willing” or “Thank God” or “God bless.” Everyone uses them in Arabic con-stantly. Avoid conversations about politics. Don’t show any Egyptian your feet, ever. If a friend or acquaintance offers something (like tea or juice or coffee) just take it, otherwise it may offend the host. But in all, I found that it was really easy to blend in to the cultural norms. The nice thing about being a foreigner in Egypt, though, is that if you do make a mistake they aren’t quick to condemn you. Just watch and learn in the beginning and you’ll be fine.

IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO

IFSA-Butler’s programs in Egypt. Egypt is a

cosmopolitan country, rich in its culture, social

fabric and history. People in Egypt are extremely

friendly and you will surely feel welcomed here.

The Egyptian hospitality is something you will

witness from the time you set foot in Egypt until

you return home.

When you live and study in a new country, you are

exposed to new academic policies, new people,

new customs and a new language, which can be

overwhelming at first. However, the Egypt IFSA-

Butler office staff will do our best to make your

adjustment and immersion in the Egyptian culture

and social life as smooth as possible.

Welcome to the land of the Pharaohs, the Nile and

the Pyramids. Learn, mingle, immerse, live the

experience and enjoy your stay. This is going to be

a great learning experience!

Sincerely,

Dr. Mohamed El-Komi, Resident Director

Israel is home to innumerable sacred sites and ancient

Israel may be small, but its surprising range of climates

country are a desert climate and the middle area is a

semi-arid zone with less extreme weather but still plenty

of sunshine. In recent years the Israeli government has

made a great push toward “greening” its countless tourist

attractions to ensure that they are sustainable and

accessible to future visitors.

Our program is based in the principal city of Jerusalem,

a city that has captured imaginations for millennia.

One of the most sacred and historic cities in the world,

Jerusalem is the perfect place to spend an exciting and

enlightening semester or year.

BARUCH HABA! WELCOME TO ISRAEL! OURS IS ONE

of the most intriguing countries and cultures in the

world, and it’s also a great place for study abroad.

Israel has it all: terrific weather, friendly people,

amazing food and a unique culture not found

anywhere else in the world.

Best of all, modern Israel is a splendid mixture

of ancient and new. The world’s three major

monotheistic religions have their heart in Jerusalem,

so history and faith abound from all corners. At the

same time, however, twenty-first century Israel is as

contemporary and developed as any European or

North American society.

Our program is based in Jerusalem. Here you’ll live

alongside Israeli students and study in one of the

world’s most prestigious universities. Come, and

experience the magic of Israel. Shalom!

Sincerely,

Monica Wasserbach

IFSA-Butler Program: American University of Sharjah

Why did you choose Sharjah for study abroad?

I chose the United Arab Emirates because I knew I wanted to study in the Middle East. My school only offered programs to UAE or Morocco, and I thought UAE would be safer and more fun for me.

How did IFSA-Butler help enhance your experience?

IFSA-Butler was great. It was really helpful to have someone come with me for the first few days of my experience. After that, having an American Student Services Coordinator who lives here was really helpful as well because I had a contact in case anything went wrong.

What is your favorite memory of Sharjah?

It is tough to pick one favorite memory from the semester but I think just collectively the hospitality of the people here is amazing. Everyone I met wanted to make sure that I had a good time, a good semester. I met a group of friends late in the semester that paid for every meal we ate together and their only condition was that I return the favor if they come to America. To me, that is something that I think you would only get in the Middle East.

What were you scared of before going abroad?

I guess the thing I was most scared of was the rules. I had heard that Sharjah was very strict about dress code, etc. I never expected to do half the things I did this semester.

What advice do you have for future Sharjah students?

Things here are relatively cheaper than they are in the States, so that is good. However, save as much as you possibly can, more than you think you will need before coming abroad. Also, make friends with some Emiratis while you’re here. They will show you some amazing stuff.
