the classroom. Showcase your ability to work with students from different cultures by conducting student teaching in a global setting.

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIESCommunity-based learning opportunities carry academic credit while providing a chance for active involvement in your host community. Placements are possible in NGOs, nonprofits, community organizations, schools, and government agencies.

a volunteer. Opportunities are available in a wide variety of interests, with activities ranging from a single-day project to a commitment for an entire

JOIN A COMMUNITYWondering how you might make friends and actually feel like a local? Every

IFSA program gives students the opportunity to engage in a community of their choosing. Whether through an on-campus club or a group based in

the wider host community, IFSA programs facilitate true integration with the culture.

EXAMINE COMMUNITY IDENTITY Our exclusive Exploring Community & Culture™ (C&C) class offers you

the opportunity to experience your host city in a way most visitors never can. This 3-credit option fosters intercultural dialogue and a greater understanding of global society. Some programs offer

FROM UNPACKED: STUDENT STORIES

IS STUDYABROADWORTH IT?

BY SONCY KAAHUIUNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLANDSPRING 2018

It’s common to hear from science, technology, engineering and mathematics students that their class schedules are too hectic or busy spending hours in labs, clinic, or independent thesis projects to fit in a study abroad experience. This unfortunate tendency for STEM students in college results in them lacking the fulfilling and eye-opening experiences that coincide with studying abroad. In my own experience as a biology major, I’ve realized that this requires some planning ahead, such as deciding to take the year long physics class during my senior year rather than as a junior. Despite this schedule rearranging, I’ve found that even in the first three weeks of studying abroad, this trade-off was well worth it. To read the entire post, visit IFSA-Butler.org/unpacked

FROM UNPACKED: STUDENT STORIES

BLACK MANIN CHINA

BY JUSTIN SEYMOUR-WELCHUNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, AMHERSTPUBLIC HEALTH POLICY AND PRACTICE—SPRING 2018

Being abroad in China has taught me so many things about myself. I am a black male from America, a first-generation college student raised in a middle class, mixed family. This may not seem that important to others, but the diversity in my family is something that many Chinese did not understand, and this often caused a lot of confusion.

Living in China as a black male has been both humbling, yet overwhelming. All I know about my African heritage is traced back to the Middle Passage in the United States, so the African, or even African-American term has always been a difficult thing for me to understand myself. I usually just say that I am black, but I know that I am not a color. I am a person just like you…

Being in China with a natural curly afro has been interesting. A lot of people think that I cannot speak Mandarin, so I often hear people say things like, “Is that his real hair? Does it grow that way? It looks weird. I want to touch it.” And some have touched it … awkward. At first, this was very difficult for me to have people constantly asking me if my hair was real, but then I began to understand that they were just curious because my hair is something that is not commonly seen on this side of the world. FROM UNPACKED: STUDENT STORIES

STUDY ABROAD: A DIAGNOSIS FOR PREMEDGROWTH

While studying abroad, I took classes in public health, something I did not have the opportunity to do previously. My view of the medical world was rounded out with further viewpoints and enhanced by professionals in fields that I rarely got to be part of, such as environmental health. I also partook in research that I am passionate about, something that I did not have time to do at my home university.

I believe that as a premed student, our academic and professional lives are set on a one-track course. Studying abroad allows for a break from that. A chance to grow into yourself a little more. To learn something that isn’t a chemical equation. To learn a new language. To experience the intricacies of a new culture. To not burn out. And most importantly, the remember why you are going into the field that you are working so hard in. Studying abroad as a premed student is one of the most enriching things you can take part in.

MANIPALGlobal and Public Health

VARANASIVaranasi—also known as Kashi or Banaras—is one of the longest-inhabited cities to grace the banks of India’s sacred Ganges River. Considered a holy city for Hindus, home to a vibrant Muslim population, and just a few miles from where the Buddha preached his first sermon, Varanasi is filled with daily religious ceremonies. The influx of pilgrims, coupled with population growth and economic development, places unique pressures on the urban environment and makes Varanasi a compelling location for study abroad.

PUNEHead to Pune to see for yourself what makes contemporary India so exhilarating. You can celebrate traditional Indian festivals in the old city, learn classical Indian music and dance, or find yourself in a maze of magnificent historical architecture. At the same time, Pune is a youthful and progressive city with a growing music and art scene and an established development hub. This balance of city life, an international landscape, and uniquely Indian roots attracts scholars and practitioners from all over India and the world. In Pune, you not only study contemporary India—you live it.

MANIPALNear the Western Ghats and only five miles from the Arabian Sea, the college town of Manipal is surrounded by tropical palm trees and stunning views. The very presence of cutting-edge Manipal Academy of Higher Education has sparked massive infrastructure development that rivals some of India’s top urban campuses. In Manipal, you will meet students from India and all over the world, and together you will study India’s public health initiatives and rich cultural heritage.

organizations, and attending screenings of Bollywood movies. • A one-week field study trip introduces you to South India via India’s famous

train system. Whether bicycling in the haunting ruins of Hampi, touring the state assembly building in Bengaluru, or hiking in the hill towns of Tamil Nadu, you will gain a deeper appreciation of the diverse realities that exist within India.

THE CITY, THE RIVER, THE SACRED• Take a boat ride along the Ganges, explore villages on the outskirts of Varanasi,

see stunning waterfalls in nearby districts, and visit local temples and religious sites – including Sarnath where the Buddha gave his first sermon.

• A one-week field study trip introduces you to the vast cultural diversity and early history of West Bengal. First stop: the striking monuments and bustling markets of Kolkata. Then, experience breath-taking views, see where tea is grown, and visit Tibetan communities nestled in the Himalayan foothills.

IFSA &BUTLER UNIVERSITYIFSA (Institute for Study Abroad) was founded in 1988 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, as a provider of study abroad programming for U.S. undergraduates. Over time, IFSA has maintained its independence as a non-profit organization and its close connection as an affiliate of Butler University, a nationally recognized, comprehensive university.

In addition to providing transcripts for all IFSA students, Butler University endorses all IFSA-taught classes through a faculty committee that

reviews class syllabi and provides curriculum advice, verifying that our academic rigor meets or exceeds expectations. Contributing to our high level of academic integrity, Butler University reviews all IFSA programs prior to program launch, and representatives from the university serve on IFSA advisory panels, our National Advisors Council Executive Committee, and our Board of Directors.

At the conclusion of your program, you and your home institution will receive a Butler University transcript with your overseas credit and grades translated to the U.S. system, making it faster and easier to receive credit for your coursework.
