About me• I completed my honors degree in teaching

in Scotland at the University of Edinburgh.• I have taught at three schools in the UK,

and this is my first international school I have taught at!

• I enjoy teaching all subjects, and have been a leader of the Pupil Council at a previous school. I particularly love English, Expressive Arts and Science.

• I have taught a Year 5 class for three years now!

Classroom Organisation• Children are brought up to class from the back playground

at 8.25am.• At the end of the day the children are brought to the front

playground.• Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri – 3pm• Weds – 12.30pm

• Parents are not asked to come up to class in the morning unless for urgent matters.

• Feel free to speak to the teacher at the end of the day, or for a longer consultation to arrange a time during the week.

• The children need to change into a pair of indoor shoes when they get upstairs, and should also have a water bottle.

• Snack time – This should be a healthy snack to keep up their energy levels until lunchtime.

• Lunchtime – This should be more substantial – try to avoid sugary drinks and too much sugary food.

Classroom Organisation• Home Learning – please support children where possible at home,

and always encourage the children to discuss their learning and demonstrate where possible.

• Reading books/library – Each week the children can take 1-2 books from the library. They make take the books for longer than a week but should still bring the books to rescan to avoid late notices/fines.

• Free Reader books – Every Monday (and during other times in the week) the children will change their reading books to take home (1-2) books.

• Reading Record – Please ensure that the children are reading with/to an adult during the week to help develop their confidence, fluency and to help with understanding. Please sign/comment in their diaries to show this has happened (they can help earn a raffle ticket for this!).

• Flexible Groups/collaborative learning – The children will have the opportunity to work in different types of groups and to work with every member of class over the course of the year.

• Classroom equipment – This is provided. If you think the children need something then please let me know – this includes homework.

Literacy• In Literacy the children will learn a range of text types, and to write them

well using the features of each text type.• For writing we use VCOP – Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers &

Punctuation – to help develop the detail, depth and variety of their writing.• The children are encouraged to join their handwriting and present work

with care.• Term 1 Units:

– Poetry– Myths & Legends– Film Narrative– Instructions– Stories from a significant author.

Mathematics• In Mathematics the children learn, practice and develop their skills in a range of

concepts – these are revised and reviewed throughout the year.• Term 1 Topics:

– Numbers & Place Value– Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication/Division – mental and written methods– Measurements – length, weight, capacity, time– 2D/3D shapes – properties of shapes– Fractions/Decimals/Percentages– Position & Directions– Statistics & Graphs– Problem Solving/Creative Maths

• In addition to this, the children complete the TIMES TABLE CHALLENGE once a week – they will benefit from regular practice at home (apps, books, etc.)

IPC• The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is a topic-based

cross-curricular learning curriculum which includes a range of important subjects – such as: Science, History, Geography, ICT, Design Technology.

• A range of skills and understanding are taught, and the children learn in many practical ways.

• For most topics there will be an exciting entry point, class trip, theme day and celebration of learning at the end of each unit.

• Any parents/family with expertise in a subject are always welcome to speak to the class and help our learning.

Homework Expectations• Reading (Daily/Regular) – Please make sure that the children read with an

adult and that their diaries are signed at least twice a week.• Times Table practice – on-going in class.• Weekly set homework:

– IPC/Literacy Project– Mathematics skills task– Spelling lists – based on class learning

• Children are asked to complete the work themselves, but parents may support.

• If it takes too much time, then speak to me. • Make sure the children do not leave work until the last minute.• Depending on the task, work done on the computer can be e-mailed to me.• Homework will be given out on a Monday and returned on the Friday.

Reports• Reports are issued three times a year:

– A short report in October based upon the beginning of the year.

– A short report in February based upon progress made so far.

– A final report in June.

• Each report will contain targets for the children to work on.

• Parent consultations are arranged in November and March where reports/progress can be discussed.

Absences• Register is taken at 8.30am.• Please make sure that your child is at school before

8.25am, ready to come into class promptly.• There will be a staff member on duty from 8.15am.• If your child is late:– 3 times in the year – Informal talk with class teacher.– 6 times in the year – Location leader meeting and letter.– 9 times in the year – A report is made to the Leerplicht.
