International Baccalaureate Parents Association IB Parent Observations

• Your student does not have to be the smartest kid in class to do well in

IB…but he/she will need to put in the work

• IB students have all kinds of personalities

• IB is stressful for parents and kids at times, particularly senior year –

learning early how to prioritize and manage time are keys to success

• LHS counselors and the IB staff are super important. They provide

guidance on course selection and IB degree point requirements.

• IB students are proud of themselves and the program. Besides

learning incredible things, they discover so much about themselves.

• Sometimes a student will determine that IB does not work for them.

This is not a failure, simply a change in direction.

International Baccalaureate Parents Association IB Parent Opinions

“It's not for every student - let them choose.

In terms of college preparation, the IB program is

worth it for the Extended Essay experience alone.”

“As a current IB senior parent, I’ve been very

impressed with Lakewood’s IB program. It brings

high-achieving kids together and creates a

wonderful community within a pretty large school

body. We are grateful to the IB teachers and staff

who provide the rigor and support for our kids.

These kids not only excel academically, but they

tend to find one another in many areas - socially,

sports, theater, music and other club interests.

We are glad we chose LHS IB!”

“We came from a small school

and wanted to expose our

daughter to large school life

sooner rather than it coming

as a surprise in college, later.

The Lakewood IB program

offered academic structure,

friendships, and opportunities

for achievement that she might

not have pursued elsewhere.

We are proud of our daughter

and proud of Lakewood.”

LHS - IBPALAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL

International Baccalaureate Parents AssociationExtended Essay (EE),

Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS),

Internal Assessment (IA)• The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word research paper completed by a diploma candidate in one of the IB subject areas

• Early in second semester of the junior year, IB diploma candidates receive a copy of the Extended Essay Guidelines with specific deadline dates and copies of the forms to be submitted

• Students may select the IB subject area for research. A subject LHS faculty member will be selected as the student's EE supervisor. This research project is a scholarly pursuit done by the student under the supervision of the faculty member, working with the student approximately 4-5 hours maximum over the course of the year.

• The Extended Essay must meet the guidelines established by IB and the guidelines established by the faculty expert.

• Extended Essays cannot include the same topics completed for Internal Assessments in IB classes. Furthermore, two or more diploma candidates can not submit essays on the same topic.

LHS - IBPA is a 501(c)3 organization ---Tax ID Number: 46-1450238 13

• CAS is at the heart of the IB Diploma Program. It enables

students to enhance their personal and interpersonal

development through experiential learning and helps students

develop their own identities. Students also learn about the

importance of reflection and developing self awareness.

Students’ CAS experience can stay with them long after they

have graduated. Students document CAS in junior and senior

years.

Creativity - the arts and other experiences that involve

creative thinking.

Activity - physical exertion contributing to a healthy

lifestyle.

Service - an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a

learning benefit for the student.

For student development to occur, CAS should involve:

o Real, purposeful activities with significant

outcomes

o Personal challenge -- tasks must extend the

student and be achievable in scope

o Thoughtful consideration, such as planning,

reviewing progress and reporting

o Reflection on outcomes and personal learning

Internal Assessment

Teacher assessment is used for most IB courses. This includes:

• Oral work in languages

• Fieldwork in geography

• Laboratory work in the sciences

• Investigations in mathematics

• Artistic performances

• EE, CAS, and IA are mandatory components of the IB

diploma program

• Help your student by brainstorming ideas for EE and CAS
