The senior students did a fantastic job of organising and ensuring the event was a huge success. I would especially like to thank Russell and Evelyn Stewart who volunteered to run the kitchen and contribute magnificent baking and sweets for our day. Congratulations to our students who competed in the Southern Zone Athletics. This was a fantastic day at the Hutt Recreation Ground and it was great to see our students achieving a number of fantastic results. We will highlight some of these in next week's newsletter. There will be a letter going home to the parents of those who qualified for the next level soon. Thank you to Andrea Rogers, Leanne Mahoney, Amy Fleming and the parent volunteers who helped make the event successful for all schools. Thank you to Room 12 for winning the Anchor Milk promotion around the Rio Olympics which meant we had a visit from an Olympian. Luuka Jones visited our school and it was inspiring to hear her stories and hear about her journey. She is an amazing athlete and we are extremely proud to share in her celebration of winning of a silver medal! Health and Safety I would like to remind everyone about parking around our school and entering our school. The most desirable parking is around and near Te Mome Road and entering the school via Victoria Street or Hutt Road. The main entrance is a shared pedestrian and vehicle entrance and whilst it is as safe as it can be currently - we cannot mitigate all risks for pedestrians entering our school at high use times. Please do not use the carpark off Railway Ave to pick up and drop off your children. As a school we recognise that dogs are an important part of family life. At our school we welcome dogs outside of school hours. During school time it is difficult to manage dogs and people on our grounds. We have an obligation to keep everyone safe whilst at school and we have developed a procedure which states how this will be achieved. Between the hours of 8am and 4pm dogs are not allowed on our school grounds unless they are working dogs or permission has been granted from a staff member. http://www.huttcentral.school.nz/policies.html Thank you to Romeo Yombek-Sokiri for sharing his writing with me this week. He included a lot of detail in his work. Ali Rahimi and Mika Marychurch also shared their writing about the visit to the SPCA. They had exciting beginnings which made me want to read on! Dear All, Well what a busy time the school is having. The board is continuing to ensure we maintain a focus on the key area of student achievement. This week we had the opportunity to talk with Ann Hoare and to see and hear first-hand the great results we are seeing from our reading recovery programme. It is incredibly rewarding to see how hard our kids are working and the support they get. the impacts these have on our school. We are working on a couple of policies which are linked to these changes and ensuring our kids continue to have a strong learning environment in a health and safe environment. We are also putting tools in place to ensure the school stays one step ahead of legislative change so that our policies are always up to date and relevant to our students, parents and staff. It was rewarding to hear from a recent Hautu session how pro-active Hutt Central School is working with local iwi, embracing our history and making a positive difference with the help of the whanau group members. Meanwhile, we have more exciting upgrades at our school continue with the hugely anticipated new school sand pit. The fundraising group have worked hard to achieve a very impressive grant, ka pai everybody. Plans to follow shortly, so watch this space. While the board is focused on governance matters and student achievement, it is always a wonderful experience to be part of the big events at the school, with our most recent being the 150th anniversary. The feedback, engagement and work done for our 150 year reunion was nothing short of amazing. Wonderfully historic storytelling from staff and pupils from yesteryear, sharing their experiences was a thrill to be part of. It really showed the incredibly strong bond the school has with its student whanau even after our they have moved on. A huge thank you to the reunion team, the community, staff and the students on putting on an exceptional show piece for our school. Being on your board, we represent you, so please feel free to come and talk to us when you see us around the school or community - we are really keen to get your views. Thank you once again for your attention and for further information on your board of trustees, check out the BOT information board in the school office or the school website. Wayne Goodfellow, Board of Trustees Chair.

Bring and Buy A huge thank you to all that supported the Bring and Buy last Friday. It is an amazing community event. We raised just over $2000. This money raised goes towards the next school camp which will be attended by the children that are in the middle syndicate at the moment. The senior students really worked together to create a great event for the whole school. Thank you once again Russell for your amazing support.

Southern Zone Athletics It was a fantastic day. Over 50 children from the middle and senior syndicate represented Hutt Central with determination and pride. There were some fantastic results and many that will go on to represent the Southern Zone at the Interzone competition.

REUNION BOOKS FOR SALE

We still have some books that were published for the Reunion available for $25.00 each at the school office.

These are a great read with the history of Hutt Central School and many entertaining stories and photos from ex students

Room 12’s prize for winning the Fonterra Olympic competition was a visit from Canoe Slalom Olympic silver medalist Luuka Jones.

Luuka Jones gave us her signature and she put a smiley face on it. She saw Eliza McCartney, Lisa Carrington and Usain Bolt at the Olympics. Myumi

We got to have our photos taken with Luuka Jones while we wore her medal. Her favourite food at the Olympics was berry smoothies. Scarlett

We asked Luuka a lot of questions about her training - She trains for 6 days every week in the water and at the gym. Nikhil

When Luuka Jones visited us yesterday we got to hold her silver medal. It was quite strong and heavy. Titan

Community Notices Bring whanau and friends along to Wilford School’s Twilight Gala for a great night out! This year there will be a retro fifties-style sweet stall, a pre-loved books, games and DVD stall, homemade crafts, delicious home baking, homemade fudge, an array of food stalls, performances by Wilford School tamariki, and activities including a petting zoo, paint ball, ride-on cars, a bouncy castle, and lots more. So come along and grab some early dinner, try your luck on the raffle, tombola or lucky dip, do a bit of Christmas shopping, sample some treats, take part in some activities, or just sit back and be entertained. Wilford School Twilight Gala, Friday 18 November, 4pm to 7pm at 100 William St, Petone. Keeping music affordable for families: Come along to Gallery Music Centre's open day on November 19, and check out how you can afford quality music tuition for your kids in 2017. Lessons range from just $30-$120 – that’s for the entire year! Gallery Music Centre has been offering high quality, small-group tuition to primary school children in Lower Hutt for over 20 years, at a fraction of its value. Thanks to Ministry of Education funding, beginner classes are only $60 for the full year - that's way cheaper than most other children's activities. Guided tours will begin at Avalon School's main reception desk on November 19, between 9am and 10am. For more information, email [email protected] or go to www.gallerymusic.org
