Alfred had an older brother Charles William KEYS. Charles departed Gravesend England on 31 July 1839 on the Ship “Cuba” and arrived in Wellington New Zealand on 03 January 1840. In 1852 Alfred KEYS left England and travelled to New Zealand via Australia. A KEYS was a witness to the marriage between William HUNT and Mary HILL. Her parents were Ann READ (1804 England – 1879 New Zealand) and William WELCH (born 03 September 1804 Kent England died 1887 New Zealand). William WELCH married Ann READ 10 February 1927 Hougham Kent England. Please note that various family trees on Ancestry website give Ann’s surnames as Read and Bond but I have not sighted the original source only the marriage index. William WELCH occupation Labourer (in 1839) and Publican (in 1842) of Westmere England departed 15 or 21 September 1839 England and arrived 31 January 1840 Port Nicholson Wellington New Zealand on the ship ‘Oriental’. He married 1825 to Anne READ formerly BOND. Their daughter Jane Susannah WELCH was aged 2½ years old at the time of the journey to New Zealand. The family settled in Taita.

One of the early identities of the Hutt Valley Mrs Alfred Keys passed away yesterday at her late residence William street Petone. Mrs Keys who was a daughter of the late William Welch of Taita, arrived in New Zealand in the ship Oriental in 1840 at the age of 2½ years. A matter of interest in Mrs Keys' life is the fact that with the possible exception of one month she spent the whole of her life in the Hutt Valley. Her late husband Mr Alfred Keys of Upper Hutt predeceased her about thirteen years. There are four sons all of whom reside at Upper Hutt also one daughter Mrs J E Clark of Oriental Street Petone. A brother resides in Masterton and a sister in Auckland.

There is a street in Upper Hutt named Key Street. It was not named after the early settler Alfred Keys but his son William Richard KEYS who was one of the early Upper Hutt Town Commissioners.

A Platelayer Killed Wellington 15 April James Keys a platelayer employed on the railway at the Upper Hutt was run over by a truck near the station yard on Saturday afternoon. He was killed instantly. Keys was



working on the line and the truck that run him down was one of several that was being shunted. The deceased was a married man.

Obituary - Mr Charles William Keys an old settler in the Hutt district Wellington passed away in his sleep on Sunday morning at the age of 83 after a short illness. Up to a recently he had led a very active life and had hardly a day’s sickness. Arriving in Wellington harbour in the ship Cuba, Captain Newcombe he landed at Petone on 1st January 1840. On 1st June 1840 he married Miss Maria Hunt who had arrived in the ship Adelaide, Captain Campbell and landed at Petone on 12th March 1840. They went to Nelson in 1842 staying there twelve months then returned to Wellington and took up their residence in the Hutt where they have lived continuously up to the present time. The issue of the marriage was ten children five sons and five daughters, of whom four sons and three daughters are living. There are 59 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs Keys although 85 years of age is still in good health and active in mind and body. In former times the old couple held the Post Office for sixteen years at the Hutt in the only store that was then there. The old gentleman carried the flag as being the oldest resident in Wellington when the Contingents left last year and has seen all his old shipmates go to their long home before his own time arrived. The old couple celebrated their sixtieth year of married life some time ago.

Mr Keys was born at Tring Herts England in 1818 and arrived in the colony in the surveying vessel Cuba, Captain Newcombe in December 1839. In June 1840 he was married at Petone by the Rev. J G Butler to Maria, eldest daughter of the late Mr Charles Hunt a passenger by the Adelaide. This was the first European wedding in the newly formed Wellington settlement. Mrs Keys survives her husband as do also seven children Charles Keys of Featherston, Mr George Keys postmaster at Waiau Canterbury, Mr Leonard Keys, and Mr Ben Keys officer in charge of



the telegraph department Napier, Mrs George Hollard, Mrs Hugh Ross and Mrs Eli Hollard. Mr. Key leaves 59 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Another of the pioneer settlers of New Zealand passed over to the great majory on November 24 in the person of Mr Charles Keys of the Lower Hutt at the age of 82 years. He arrived in New Zealand in the surveying ship Cuba in December 1839 spending his first night ashore on 01 January 1840. In June of that year he was married at Petone the wedding ceremony being stated to have been the first in the Wellington province. He is survived by his widow, seven children, 59 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren

Pioneering Record - Native-Born Colonists - Oldest Living Couple - The distinction of being the oldest living married couple born in New Zealand apparently belongs to Mr and Mrs George Hollard of New Plymouth both of whom are just over 80 years of ago. Mr Hollard was born at Wellington on 26 November 1842. His parents arrived from Britain at Wellington the year previously in the ship Arab. After his marriage in 1862 he took up land in the Wairarapa and engaged in sheep and cattle faming remaining in the district for 25 years. While there he was instrumental with Sir Walter Buchanan and several others in founding the first Co-operative dairy factory in the Dominion in the days before the introduction of the separator and refrigerator. During the Maori wars he was forced to leave his home and seek refuge in Wellington with his family. Mrs Hollard was born at Wellington on 23 June 1841. Her father the late Mr Charles William Keys arrived with the first survey party from the United Kingdom in 1839 and married a daughter of Mr Charles Hunt who arrived in the next vessel following the survey ship. Mr Keys was the first postmaster at the Lower Hutt. He lived to the age of 88 years and Mrs Keys to the age of 92. Two of their surviving sons have retired from the Post and Telegraph Department on superannuation. Mr and Mrs Hollard have three sons and seven daughters all married.
