According to this theory, people are born with different traits that are relatively stable over time. These traits influence behavior and to be a successful leader you must be born with a set of specific traits (Drive, Integrity, etc.)

Count Adhemar is a leader solely because he was born nobility. Back in Medieval times, people believed nobility inherited the certain qualities/traits necessary to be a leader.

According to this theory, the qualities that make up a leader are divided into three categories: self savvy, people savvy, and business savvy. All of the competencies are important aspects of a leader and can be developed through practice.

Throughout the movie William displays many of the competencies in the HTM model. He displays interpersonal communication when he interacts with Jocelyn, and his friends. He displays planning and professionalism when he is training and practicing jousting. Additionally, he demonstrates commitment to his development throughout the entire movie which is necessary to be successful in the HTM Kaleidoscope model

This theory is rooted in the idea that leaders are made rather than born and focuses on the actions of leaders rather than their traits. According to this theory people can grow and develop into leaders over time and through practice and experience.

William Thatcher, Roland, and Wat discover their master dead in the middle of a jousting tournament that he was about to win which was going to provide food for all of them.

William Thatcher is not nobility by blood, but his actions reflect those of a leader

Rather than let the three of them starve, Thatcher decides to pose as their dead master in hopes that he will be able to win money to provide food for them. This decision demonstrates Behavior Based Theory because although he was not born a leader (nobility), his self-less action to joust in order to provide food for them proves leadership. Thatcher says “A man can change his stars,” which parallels the core element of Behavior Based Theories, that people can change and develop.

This theory is relationship-oriented and is centered around the idea that leaders and followers develop relationships through interactions and over time. According to this theory, the leader-follower relationship goes through 3 phases: Stranger, Acquaintance, Partnership. As the relationship progresses through the stages the quality of exchanges and trust becomes better and stronger.

Kate asks to produce Thacther’s armor, and at first she is turned down.

Kate, a widowed blacksmith wants to be recognized for her talent in her trade rather than defined by her gender.

When Kate first meets Thatcher, they do not respect one another and have low-quality interactions. Over time and multiple interactions, they’re relationship goes through all three stages of the leader-follower relationship: stranger, acquaintance, and partnership. When Kate first asks to produce Thatcher's armor, her talent and skills are not trusted, but after she proves herself in teaching him how to dance and the tests of her armor are successful, they develop a relationship of mutual respect and trust.

Path/Goal Theory

This theory is task-oriented and is has to do with the various techniques leaders use to motivate their subordinates to accomplish certain goals. The leader uses the specific technique that either compliments or compensates for the subordinates abilities/deficiencies. These techniques include: directive-path, goal-clarifying, supportive, participative, and achievement oriented.

Ten minutes into the movie after William wins his first jousting match, Roland and Wat want to split up the money, but William wants to use the money to train and win more money for them

William, a member of the pheasant class has just won his first jousting match by posing as Sir Ector

William uses multiple of the different leadership behaviors to convince his Roland and Wat to put the money towards his training. Firstly he uses the supportive-leader style by empathizing with them about their lives and telling them that they could “be champions” and have it much better. He then uses the participative leader behavior when he asks them for their input and opinions on what to di with the money. Finally, he uses the Achievement-oriented leader behavior when he tells them that with 3 coins they can all “change their stars.” By using these different leadership behaviors he is able to convince his friends to invest their coins in his development.

According to this theory there is no one best leadership style because it all depends on the situation. There are 3 components: the leader, the follower, and the situation. The different leadership styles are categorized into 4 different behavior typess: S1: telling, S2: Selling, S3: Participating, and S4:Delegating

William is in the stocks facing death and humiliation, and then is rescued when the Son of King Edward dubs him nobility

In the beginning of the scene, when William is in the stocks, The Son of King Edward uses a the S2: Selling leadership style when he provides direction to William and gets him to buy into the idea that he is a noble man in both his heart and blood. He then switches to S4: Delegating when he dubs William Sir William and gives him the responsibilities and honor of being nobility.

Transform-ational Leadership

The core influence behind this theory is the idea that great leaders can motivate people to accomplish more than what is expected of them by being attentive to the needs and motives of their followers. This theory is influenced by values and supports the idea that people can change and transform one another by engaging in ways that creates a connection and increase morality and motivation. There are 4 I’s that a transformational leader incorporates: Idealized influence ,Inspirational motivation, Intellectual stimulation, and Individualized consideration.

William’s father wanted William to have a better life than he could give him, so he arranged to have him taken care of by a knight so that he would be able to one day “change his stars”

William’s father was of a low class and wanted his son to have a better life

William’s father motivated William to accomplish more than was expected of him in regards to being born as a pheasant by giving him the opportunity to change his destiny by having him work and apprentice for a real knight. William’s father displays Inspirational Motivation to William by painting an optimistic picture of a wonderful life ahead.
