Theory Definition Scene Character Example

Explanation Using 10 pt. font, define the theory of collection of theories. Response should include information from the slides and/or the articles. Can include your opinion if backed up by evidence, but should not only be your opinion. Make sure to include the components of the theory if applicable. Do not provide examples here.

Describe the scene you will reference. Set up the situation to include where it occurs in the movie and the plot overall.

Describe the character and/or characters in order to give us a reference related to the situation you will reference.

Give a detailed example of the theory and tell us why this illustrates the theory. Refer to the definition and key components of the theory as much as possible. Be as specific as possible. It is okay to add your opinion if it is backed up by evidence you cite about the scene and character. Do not make the reader infer anything about the scene or character. For example, if you discuss intellectual stimulation as part of transformational leadership it should be defined.

Trait Based Theories

While some researchers believe personality traits do not affect to be a successful leader, some people do have certain traits that are important as a leader. For example, a leader with a drive shows high desire to achieve the goal.

Rusty is informed that Mr. Ocean has been Red Flagged from the Casino.

Rusty Ryan by Brad Pitt

Mr. Ocean’s involvement with his ex wife had caused some issues. Brad Pitt without hesitation told Mr. Ocean that he became a risk and will have to sit out the robbery. He asks Matt Damon if he could take Mr. Ocean’s part in robbery. Doing this shows his commitment in getting the job done. Taking over leadership showing them that even without Mr. Ocean They will get the job done.

Skills and Competencies (Use HTM Model)

A strong leader would plan ahead set and keep timelines and ensures time management.

Linus Caldwell by Matt Damon convinces, distracts and picks pocket the casino owner prior to the robbery.

All characters involved

Linus Caldwell approaches the casino owner and distracts him by convincing him that he’s with the NGA. He tells the casino owner that they are in violation. He takes him to Bernie Mack (blackjack dealer). Damon starts telling him loudly on the floor that the employee is an ex convict. This causes the casino owner to take him to the back giving him access to the hallways and elevator. As they finish their meeting he is able to slip the key out of the casino owners pocket giving them access to the elevator that leads to the vault.

Behavior Based Theories (Use MLQ or LPI)

Leaders are able to learn behaviors important to be successful (LPI).

Same scenario as the trait based theories.

The previous scene from the trait based theories shows an important trait drive, but also it shows that Rusty was able to take over Mr Oceans position since they have been working together.

Mr. Ocean and Brad worked together before, so apparently Mr. Ocean trusts Rusty are in the phase 3 of LMX and work as partners.

Path/Goal Theory

According to the theory, a leader can achieve the goal by directing the best paths or supporting the followers. The leader is willing to assist the followers and compensate the skills that are missing from them.

Danny Ocean by George Clooney

Mr. Ocean demonstrates the achievement-oriented leader behavior within the path-goal theory, and he directs each person, who has different types skills, and show them what the entire plan and tasks are.

Situational Leadership

A successful leader is able to adjust his leadership style depending on tasks, competence, confidence, and situations.

In the vault built in the warehouse when the Chinese guy(Yen) was simulating how to get to the door from the container without touching the floor.

In this scene, Rusty was behaving as S3 or S4 of the situational leadership model. Rusty knows that Yen has the skill to get through this obstacle, so Rusty just asked “What do you do?” instead of giving Yen directions.

Transform-ational Leadership

Leader is attentive to the needs and motives of followers and tries to help followers reach their fullest potential.

In the beginning of the movie when Mr. Ocean explains his plan to rob the casino in front of everyone.

Mr. Ocean When the team members ask questions to Mr. Ocean, he gives solutions and encourages them to ensure we are on the same page.
