HTHCV Axé Radio Project
Essential Questions
Why do we hear the same four songs on the radio?
How can we continue to build a community radio station that not only produces a diverseoffering of quality programming, but that also positively engages our school community?
Project Description
We will operate our own community radio station here for the Chula Vista campus thatencourages a diverse range of listeners and reflects the unique energy of HTHCV. In doing so,we will use our broadcasts as our way to actively engage and connect with the CV community.Ultimately by the end, we will assess the quality of our work with how many students arelistening and how well we are engaging the community around us. We started Axé Radio backin October and this project will be committed to making it bigger and better. From producing on-air content to constructing our after-school studio space, this will be a huge effort that requiresmany different talents and roles.
We will primarily record after school on Mondays and Tuesdays. If part of production team, youmust record at least one show every month (no more than two a month). During our departmentmeetings, we will investigate and strategize on how to best design, build, manage, and promoteour radio station.
Axé Radio Roles and Departments By the end of our third week, you will be assigned a department to work in. A functional radiostation is not only made up of DJ’s and on air talent, but instead an entire crew of soundengineers, managers, interns, advertisers, etc. that work together to make the stationsuccessful.
Here are the essential groups/departments that we need to create this station. There will be

smaller roles and responsibilities that will come under each role, but these departments will helpus collectively work towards a quality show and effective station.
● ENGINEER DEPARTMENT (HANDS) - This department will be responsible for all thingstechnical. We need to set up an entire station fast. This team will research radio
technology, catalogue the village’s resources, purchase necessary equipment, and setup our broadcast space. We will not exist without this department.
● PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT (FACE) - Our production department will focus primarilyon the structure and quality of our programming. They will format the shows, preparethem throughout the week, and work hard to improve them. This will include both on airtalent and show directors.
● HYPE DEPARTMENT (HEART) - This department will be in charge of promoting theshow and engaging with the community. They will build a website that is functional andaccessible. They will create a marketing campaign to encourage new listeners. They willbe in charge of polling the public and getting constant feedback from the people.
● MANAGEMENT TEAM (BRAINS) - This will be the smallest team (3 people max) andwill essentially lead each department and manage the entire station. This role requiresthe most work, carries the most responsibility, and will probably earn the least amount ofrecognition from the community. However, they will be the force behind this project.
Three Main Goals of the Axé Community Radio Project
1) Music Appreciation and Media Literacy - During our time together, we will actively questionour own musical interests and share our style with each other. Although our radio program willpromote content of all formats, we will use music often in class to connect and frame the goalsof our radio station.
From Bruno Mars to Marvin Gaye to Johnny Cash, we will study what good music sounds likeand where it came from. We will push each other to not only be lovers of good music, but alsomotivated to share and explore new artists and genres.
2) Radio Program - We will produce, every week, a collection of recorded shows that will
highlight the interests and needs of the entire village. We will not think of this as individualpodcasts, but inste ad, we will create a “live” on -air community with its own identity, message, and sound. This mission will include the necessary study of radio technology and stationmanagement.
3) Community Connection - We will engage our audience and constantly try to attract newlisteners. From live shows to music workshops to local spotlights, we will strive to be more thanvoices trapped in a speaker. Instead, we will look for ways to bring our program to the people,

Exhibition and Launch Party Description
To officially launch our radio station and collection of programming, we will focus primarily focuson their target audience- each other. Our exhibition will be essentially a marketing initiative asthe student try to engage and attract dedicated listeners from the Chula Vista village.
The last week, we will host the Axé Power Lunch every day. During that time, the students willset up our outdoor studio and each show will record a live show that will both showcase theirwork and also capture the voices of their peers. The specifics of that show will depend on theaim and purpose of each show, but the student will use their “lunch launch” to promote theirmonthly broadcasted program and introduce students to their content/program. Either byinterviewing teachers, organizing student dance offs, or facilitating a live quiz show, the studentswill create and structure a 15 minute public program (recorded for later broadcast) that will push
their program and promote our station.
