Imagine reporting on your first day of work to see your colleagues insulting, fighting each other and complaining how bad everything is? Would you want to

work there? Probably not. However, ac-

cording to the opening remarks of Dr. Patrick Hyland, Director of Research & Development at Sirota Survey Intelligence and September’s presenter for The HR Alliance, this is what the world of Corpo-rate America has refined itself into for the opening decade of the 21st century.

The aftermath of the economic hurricane, “Great Recession” has hit America really hard. People are anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed and uncertain about what to do after struggling to maintain their or-ganizations through the gale force winds. To give you an indication of how tough

organizations have been battered;

• Many Senior Level Executives are con-

templating leaving their current or-

ganizations, the most common reason being lack of advancement or dis-agreement with company philosophy

• Trust in business and government

leaders has declined over the past dec-ade, earning our decade the nick

name, “The lost decade of Leadership”

FOUNDER’S CORNER By: Jason Boltax As we celebrate our fifth year, The HR Alliance is looking forward to our future with enthusiasm

and a renewed focus on broadening our reach to the HR community.

This will be the last Founder’s Corner as it is with great pleasure that I welcome Ann Marie Morris as President of the HR Alli-ance. You may know Ann Marie as an

active member and facilitator of several of our sessions. She has over 20 years of experience running corporate learning and organizational development functions at a variety of firms including Credit Suisse, JP Morgan Chase, Interpublic, and

Sony Music. She is currently leading a training consultancy, Train-Your-Talent.

As part of this new role, she will be taking

on the day-to-day operations of the or-ganization and working closely with me on strategy. By asking Ann Marie to join the team, it will allow me to focus more on

growth, marketing, and our strategic vi-sion.

Join me in welcoming Ann Marie to the

team. She is looking forward to getting to know our members and working to make the HR Alliance an even more dy-namic and responsive organization.

So keep an eye out for the new “President’s Corner” and feel free to reach out to Ann Marie to share your thoughts and ideas. She can be reached at [email protected].

EVENT SUMMARYEVENT SUMMARY

• When the audience was asked to cite good exam-

ples of leadership between 2000-2010; about half the audience could not come up with even one (including the writer).

“The issue today is whether America can nourish enough good leaders to forge a bright path into the 21st cen-tury”, a quote from David Gergen, U.S. News and World Report. For us in HR, it means we have to restore hope and faith in our own organization’s leaders or continue allowing our overwhelmed leaders to lead us into more poor performance. Although there were over 150 years

of HR Experience in the room, this task is still a daunting challenge, many of us figuring out where to start.

Dr. Hyland then proceeded to discuss suggestions worth considering on how to get started:

• Character, specifically Honesty, Forward-Thinking,

Inspiration and Competence is the cornerstone to setting the stage for effective leadership.

• There are 4 major schools of thought when it comes

to leadership, there is no one right approach for an entire time or situation. Shared Leadership, as President Obama did when the operation to capture Osama Bin Laden was executed is necessary. Let the individual best able to handle the situation lead the response

• Positive Attitude, it defines the Emotional Climate.

If the manager mindset is positive, the employee experience and customer experience improve and that enhances the Business Performance.

• How do you help managers develop a positive atti-

tude? Managers have these 4 questions haunting them. The HR Professional who provides direction is the one taking their organization places;

1. Where are we going?

2. How can we get there?

3. How can I get us there?

4. What’s in it for me?

You may be reading this article and saying to yourself, how do I make the time to do this? Dr. Hyland was pre-pared for you too and has this quote to share from Sully

Sullenberger, the famed pilot of the perfect landing on the Hudson River.

"One way of looking at this might be that for 42 years, I've been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience: education and training. And on January 15 the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal.”

Preparation pays off. If you start today, one relationship at a time and consistently nurture it with direction, feed-back, positive energy and answers when needed, you will see progress towards a work climate where there is trust in leadership once again. Maybe it is because of the many small steps the US Army takes that makes trust in

their leadership the strongest of all organizations. Just remember, you have your network of the HR Alliance to fall back on, because collectively, we have over 2,000 years of experience and if anyone can solve this chal-lenge, we can!

Kristina Birukova’s ambitions can be easily seen through her career background. Her first exposure to human re-

sources was during a Target internship where she shad-owed the HR manager and knew that human resources was for her. The bulk of her experience is rooted in her first position as an HR Gener-

alist for Next Ridge, a small telecommunications firm in

upstate New York. There she managed benefits admini-stration, payroll and employee file management which at that time were responsibilities that were new to her and kept her learning for the next two and a half years.

She realized her growth potential within the HR industry and sought a more challenging role as an HR Manager for LinguaLinx Language Solutions, an international com-munications start-up company in New York. In this in-tense role, Kristina oversaw the entire HR function where she made drastic changes that ultimately improved the life and synergy of the company. Over the course of

three years, she decreased the high turnover and im-proved the applicant tracking process for recruiters, sav-

ing time.

Kristina also cultivated a more in-depth internship pro-gram which persuaded more interns to stay longer or return the following year. Her footprint in employee de-velopment was to create a rigorous training curriculum

for all new hires, increasing the rate of their efficiency and contribution. Community involvement saw her last efforts where she initiated a Community Volunteer Pol-icy, urging employees to participate in more volunteer opportunities.

The transformation of the company initiated by Kristina’s

strategic planning and creativity created a foundation to which the organization could only transcend. She contin-ues her positive influence in her new position as HR

manager for CitiStorage, a document management com-pany.

When asked about the future of human resources, she said technology will be the key to improving the func-

tionality of all levels of HR including talent acquisition, training, career development and retention.

Kristina received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the SUNY Albany and is a member of SHRM and HRNY. Her passion is traveling and learning new cultures, which is apparent from the nineteen coun-tries she visited.

If you would like to connect with Kristina to learn more about her experiences, you may contact her at [email protected]
