◦ First, scroll through the list of languages and click on any that you want to use (the keyboard you just installed will show up as "IPA Unicode 1.0 (LMA)").

◦ Now, make sure the checkbox at the bottom labeled "Show input in menu bar" is checked. If it is, you should see a little flag in your menu bar, near the charging icon and volume icon. This icon will let you switch between input modes or choose specific characters directly from a unicode palette.

◦ Whichever 'flag' or symbol is checked is how your keys will respond.• My IPA keyboard comes with a pdf that explains what keys do what, but you can also open a

Keyboard Viewer window (if you checked the "Keyboard & Character Viewer" in System Preferences). I highly recommend this because the keyboard and character viewers are awesome for typing in other keyboards or using non-Latin characters.

(What your normal keyboard looks like with Shift and Command pressed)

(The character viewer -- if you double click on a character, it will be inserted into whatever document your cursor is active in)

3) Test the keyboard• Open the Language menu (Picture #2)• Select the keyboard viewer• Select the IPA keyboard• Type something in IPA while watching what characters are available when you press nothing,

shift, option, shift+option, and caps lock!

4) Instructions for installing fonts (including IPA fonts from SIL):• Download font files (SIL Doulos is very popular:

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?item_id=DoulosSIL_download • Go to: Users > YourUserName > Library > Fonts• Drop font file in this folder (It should end in something like .ttf, .otf, .ttc)• Choose this font in whatever word processing program you like! (Word, Pages, etc)

◦ This works for any font file you want. There are lots of free, fun fonts available online, as well as fonts specifically for other languages*.

* For instance, I use to type in Arabic a lot. I have several Arabic fonts (akin to Times, Helvetica, and Impact but that only include Arabic characters). Most font files only include support for a limited set of characters. If you use uncommon or non-Latin characters in Unicode (such as through the Character Viewer), you may need to download a font file that supports these characters.
