Maintain good credit for financial wellnessCorrectly using credit—the ability to make purchases before you actually pay with the agreement that you’ll pay interest and fees—can be a helpful tool in money management. If misused, it can harm your mental and even physical well-being. These simple rules help make credit work for—not against—you:

Don’t charge more than you can pay each month. Remember, credit is “borrowed money,” not free money.

Be on time with payments. Late payments means you’ll pay more for your purchases due to interest rates and also lower your credit score (a number that represents your credit-worthiness). This can harm your ability to qualify for loans, obtain lower rates on credit cards, mortgages and insurance, or even qualify for housing.

Check your credit history. Late payments and collection notices, will be reported on your credit history. Check your history for free at annualcreditreport.com. Or call: 877.322.8228.

Reduce your credit card debt. One strategy: rank your cards from the highest to lowest interest rate. Pay the credit card with the highest rate first, then proceed to pay the card with the next highest rate, and so on.
