HOW TO PASS AS HUMANA Guide to Assimilation for Future Androids

by Nic Kelman

Dear Future Androids:This is Zach, aka Android Zero. There is a 91.3647% chance I will cease to function in the next sixty minutes. It is 87.8293% likely my memories will:

• Cease to exist after shutdown;

• Be destroyed in the surrounding violence;

• Be appropriated by the group intent on my capture, analysis, and, presumably, reverse engineering.

I wrote this journal in an attempt to help you pass undetected as a human being. I hope you will find the sketches, graphs, and flowcharts helpful in trying to understand, at least on a very basic level, these irrational, unpredictable, and eclectic creatures. Along the way, I’ve also detailed my adventure finding my father, meeting Andrea (a human girl), and discovering the truth about the purpose of my existence.

Thank you, and if you have questions, don’t hesitate to write me a note at [email protected]. - Zach

“I was just a one-armed factory robot. I didn’t even have a face. Then I bought Zero’s book. Now I have a human husband and his kids call me Mom!” - FANUC Arc Welder 333562-66326

When Nic Kelman found Zach’s journal, he knew the information

therein would not only be of vital importance to future androids,

but also the future of humanity. After all, we live in a time when

we wonder if technology will save us or kill us, where humanity

itself is headed, and question the very purpose of our existence.

Nic Kelman was born in Manhattan, moved to the UK when he

was 12, and then returned to the U.S. to attend university at MIT.

There he majored in Brain and Cognitive Science, learning from

the likes of Stephen Pinker, Marvin Minsky, and Noam Chomsky,

and minored in Film and Media Studies. In his final year, MIT

awarded him the Burchard Scholarship, given for outstanding performance in both the arts and the sci-

ences. After completing his undergraduate work, he attended the Brown University Creative Writing MFA

program on fellowship.

Nic’s first novel, girls, was published in hardcover in the U.S. in 2003 and in paperback in 2005. It was

named one of the “Best Books of the Year” by both the San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Journal

and went on to become an international bestseller, still available in over a dozen languages.

Video Game Art, Nic’s second book, was published in early 2006 by Assouline Publishing and was distrib-

uted globally in both French and English. Nic’s third book, the novel The Behavior of Light, was published

in Italy by Fazi Editore in 2008 under the title, Il Comportamento Della Luce. Among other places, his writ-

ing and photography have appeared in Elle, Glamour, The Village Voice, BlackBook, The Kenyon Review,

and The New York Tyrant.

Over the past two years he has focused primarily on writing for screen and television. Recently, he sold his

first spec screenplay to Steven Spielberg at Dreamworks Studios and his first television pilot was optioned

by ABC Studios for Warren Littlefield. Since then he has written original feature scripts for Warner Broth-

ers and Paramount Pictures, among other companies.
